    INTRODUCTION TO FINAL CUT PRO

    Final Cut Pro is a professional non-linear editing, non-destructive software application developed by Apple Inc. Theapplication is only available forMac OS X version 10.4 or later,and is a module of the Final Cut Studio product. The softwarelogs and captures video onto a hard drive (internal or external),

    where it can be edited and processed. From the early 2000s, Final Cut Pro developed a large and

    expanding user base including many independent filmmakers. Ithas made inroads with film and television editors whotraditionally use Avid Technology's Media Composer. According

    to a 2007 SCRI study, Final Cut made up 49% of theprofessional editing market, with Avid at 22%. This has been afunction of a hugely expanding professional editing marketplacerather than a large reduction in installed Avid users.

    THE BROWSER, THE VIEWER,THE CANVAS, THE TIMELINE/ The Final Cut interface has four main

    windows: the Browser, where source media files are listed;

    the Viewer, where individual media files can bepreviewed and trimmed;

    the Timeline, where media can be cut together

    into a sequence;

    The Canvas, where the edited production in the

    timeline can be viewed.

    THE BROWSER, THE VIEWER,THE CANVAS, THE TIMELINE/ The positions and sizes of these windows can be changed, but

    by default, the Browser is at the top left, with the Viewer andCanvas to its right, in that order, and the Timeline below. Thereis also a small Toolbox window and two audio level indicatorsfor the left and right audio channels.

    Both the Viewer and Canvas have a shuttle interface (forvariable-speed scanning through a clip, forwards or backwards)and a jogging interface (for frame-by-frame advancing).

    The standard J, K and L keys can be used to play the video atfull speed backwards, to pause the video, and to play it at full

    speed in a forward direction, respectively. The I and O keys can be used to set in and out points for a

    clip, or for the entire sequence.

    The Browser

    The browser (Top Left) contains all of the files that areboth logged and captured from the camera or imported(File-import such as video files or sound files). These aresaved in folders called bins. The name of the folder can

    be changed we will call ours week 5 Editing Tutorial.The browser also has an 'effects' tab in which. Videotransitions and filters can be browsed and dragged ontoor between clips.

    The Canvass

    The canvas is a mini screen that contains the contents of

    the film clips that you place on the Timeline below. To

    add clips to the Timeline, besides dragging them there, it

    is possible to drag clips from the Browser or Viewer onto

    the Canvas. Using the wireframe view on the canvas, theclip can be manipulated directly - dragging it around in

    the canvas to change its position, for example, or

    resizing it. Precise adjustment controls for these things

    are in the viewer.

    The Viewer

    The viewer is to the right of the canvas and is another miniscreen in which clips can be previewed before being placed onthe timeline and edited.

    The viewer also has tabs for each channel of the selected clip'saudio, in which the waveform for the audio can be viewed and

    scrubbed, and where its volume can be key framed. The filters tab is where effects for the clip appear and where

    their parameters can be adjusted and key framed. Finally, the viewer's motion tab contains tools to adjust the scale,

    opacity, cropping, rotation, distortion, drop shadow, motion blur

    and time remapping properties of the clip. Mini-timelines to the right of each parameter allow the property to

    be key framed.

    Timeline

    Clips can be edited together in the timeline. Within the timelinethere are sequences in which your film clips are arranged andedited. You will need to name your sequence so that it isrecognisable. After you have named it you will notice that a file inthe browser is called the same name. This is your sequence file.

    REMEMBER TO SAVE YOUR WORK (SAVE OFTEN!) The timeline in Final Cut Pro allows 99 video tracks to be layered

    on top of each other. If a clip is higher in the timeline thananother, then it obscures whatever is below it. The size of avideo clip can be altered, and the clips can be cropped, among

    many other settings that can be changed.

    LOG AND CAPTURE/

    Before doing anything else you will need to moveyour video files from your DV tape to the computersHard Drive. To do this we will need to use a set upin Final Cut called Log and Capture.

    You can access this function through pressing Apple-8 or through the menu. Make sure your camera isattached via firewire and that it is switched to tapeplay back.

    We will be using Batch Capture as it saves Hard

    Drive space by only capturing good clips andorganizes and arranges your clips for you. By pressing log and capture you will have brought

    up a new window with a viewer. (See Below)
