ISSUE 6

Welcome parents to our weekly newsletter, thank you to those parents who answered our remote learning questionnaire, the results were extremely positive especially with regards to the support that our teachers give through this difficult time. What is also interesting is the fact that your children like to learn at their own pace.

As we prepare to open our school to Year 10 students and continue to expand our remote learning offer it is important to continue to celebrate our students and their absolute resilience.

As a final light-heartened quiz can you guess what event I captured (badly) last week?

Great work

I hope you all enjoyed your half term, what a glorious week it was and I am sure you all made the most of it.

The creativity has been superb with lots of DIY projects going on with amazing results!

Charlie Hewitt has been busy again this time constructing a very solid looking bird table using power tools, hope you had a safety check there Charlie.

Lydia court also managed to find a Stag beetle (they are rare these days) how did you catch it?

Jenny Kemp has been active exploring the woods, decorating cakes and my favourite, paying tribute to our VE heroes, beautiful drawings Jenny!

This week “Shout Out” winner goes to Braydon Stocks who made a garden table from wooden pallets and a mosaic top! I love this idea and it seems quite easy to make (let me know how you do it!) In addition, Braydon decided to brighten up the garden with a flower patch. So much creativity has gone into this Braydon, I hope you, and your family are making the most of it.

I think this little quote shows us how simple life can be for all ages. Being silly allows you to remain joyful and happy with yourself and life. Being honest means that people will trust you and being kind creates peaceful and happy relationships.

Please keep sending your photos my way and keep safe

Home Learning Tip

“Learning is the relatively permanent change in a person’s knowledge or behaviour due to experience”

Page 4: As we prepare to open our school to Year 10 students and ......Sumdog Competition This week our Year 7 and 8s have started to gear up for the National Oasis Sumdog Contest. As of Friday

The diagram below shows that learning takes place (and becomes permanent), when knowledge that a student has received is transferred to a student’s long-term memory.

In lessons (either in the classroom or those set remotely), students will be asked to practice using the knowledge that they have received. This practice will take different forms, from answering simple “what is…” questions, to filling in the gaps in sentences or explaining why facts are true.

Students will often find these parts of the lessons harder as they require deeper thinking, but it is vital that students do practice using the new knowledge so that it is transferred to long term memory and connected with previous learning using mental models. If new learning is not practised then it is forgotten very quickly (perhaps even before the end of the lesson), and this will result in students struggling to make sense of future learning.

Year 10 Live Lessons

It has been a very busy week for year 10, with the move to online ‘virtual’ lessons, senior team interviews, as well as a continuation of our usual online learning. Wednesday saw our first live lessons delivered by MS Teams, with over half the year group logging in at the correct time for their English class. These lessons will continue over the coming weeks, as a means of giving students that contact with staff which they have sorely missed through the lockdown, and we are currently working on a timetable for continuing with these once students start to return to school. Students will receive an invite to their lessons via email (which will have a link sending them to MS Teams), with lessons taking place on the following days:

Senior Student Team

Mr Dale and Mr Brown have interviewed 35 Year 10 students, who have applied for positions on next year’s senior student team. Each and every single one of them should be incredibly proud of how they have conducted themselves at these interviews, with students showing incredible confidence, insight and perception, and I have been incredibly proud to see how well they have all done. All students showed a great awareness of the problems that are likely to be facing students once we return to school, and an incredible determination to help be part of the solution. It was very inspiring to see young people talk with such eloquence and compassion. A huge well done to all of those involved.

Cultural Capital

It’s not every day that a spaceship blasts astronauts into space, but that is what happened on Saturday with the launch of SpaceX’s Dragon rocket, piloted by Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken. This marks the first time that a private company (rather than one run by the government) has sent astronauts into space, and could be the start of further exploration and discovery of the great unknown. Perhaps in 70 years, your grandchildren will be taking holidays to the Moon or even Mars! Follow the link to watch the footage of the Dragon space craft’s lift off

Assembly

Over the next few weeks, Mr Woodman is going to be doing a series of virtual assemblies looking at the different 9 habits. Please follow the link to see this weeks assembly on being humble.
