We have had some changes in the past year. Scholarship Recipients ndash For the past several

years the Quad City Section has offered two

scholarships for students interested in pursuing an

agricultural engineering related degree Although

the scholarships were open to local high school

students the great majority of the applicants and

recipients have been college students from Midwest

universities

Locally the Quad City Engineering and Science

Council (QCESC) operates a scholarship program

open only to local high school students In 2018

the QCESC awarded 17 scholarships totaling

$68000 to students from 12 area high schools The

success of this program with local students led to

the decision to offer a single $ 1000 Quad City

Section scholarship for 2018 through the QCESC

program

Luke Soko (center) receiving the Quad City

Sectionrsquos scholarship from QCESC Scholarship

Chair Tom Hein (left) and QCESC Past President

Jeffrey Richland (right)

This year the Quad City Sectionrsquos scholarship was

awarded to Luke Soko a senior at Bettendorf High

School Luke has participated in football

basketball baseball National Honor Society and

Student Council He is a three year starting varsity

pitcher and was an Honorable Mention linebacker

on the 2017 class 4A semifinalist Bettendorf

football team He also was the Treasurer of the

Class of 2018 for four consecutive years and the

Treasurer of the Student Council his senior year

Additionally Luke has been a volunteer for the

Bettendorf Youth Basketball Association as an

assistant coach for a third grade basketball team and

has been a consistent volunteer for the Bettendorf

Booster Clubrsquos Holiday Boutique Lastly Luke is

currently employed part-time by Hy-Vee on Utica

Ridge in the General Merchandise Department

Luke will be attending Iowa State this fall pursuing

a major in biological systems engineering and a

minor in energy systems andor sustainability Luke

received the scholarship at the 2018 QCESC

Banquet and was also recognized at the Awards

Meeting

Luke submitted the following essay on his career

goals ldquoI aspire to look the following generation in

the eyes knowing that I worked to create a safer

cleaner and healthier place for them to live I am

passionate about renewable energy sciences and the

environment and I would like to major in biological

systems engineering or chemical engineering I

strongly believe that by ensuring and innovating

environmentally friendly chemical processes

throughout businesses biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers help

our world one community at a time I have chosen

these majors because biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers work

to extend the longevity of not only the human race

but other organisms as well It is a profession in an

industry developed to ensure a safer and healthier

tomorrow for all organisms Engineers are one of

the few people that have the knowledge and the

ability to consistently improve the lives of all

people I aspire to be an engineer

I have always desired to help our planet In 7th

grade I conducted a project on hydrogen power and

went on the local JWQC news to show off my kit-

made hydrogen car and explain how PEM fuel cells

function In 8th grade I assembled a team that

worked to design and present a model of an

alternate sustainable energy source we designed an

anaerobic digestion and hydroponics cyborg system

that would feed off a schoolrsquos fecal matter and

organic lunch waste to produce electricity for the

school I desire to turn these little projects into

legitimate products that help shape the future of

energy in our world

I would love to commercialize an aerobic digestion

and hydroponics cyborg system that is cheap small-

scaled and practical for families schools hospitals

communities sewage plants and farm owners I

envision a system in every facility where anaerobic

bacteria eat organic waste to produce biogas which

is then filtered and ignited to produce electricity in a

methane combustion engine Any carbon dioxide

products could be pumped into a greenhouse raising

vegetables outside the system

I would love to engineer fuel cells that are more

practical and efficient It would be an honor to

work on developing a hydrogen fuel cell that does

not use platinum and does not corrode I dream of a

fuel cell system that uses hydrolysis to split water

and yet still produces a high net amount of

electricity from the hydrogen The system could be

fueled with water thus eliminating issues involved

with manufacturing andor transporting hydrogen

Lastly I would love a career that innovates

chemical processes to make them more

environmentally friendly I would also enjoy a

8

career that takes samples from nearby streams and

forests and works with other engineers to ensure the

environmental processes of nearby manufacturing

plants are environmentally friendly I find all of

these professions profoundly interesting and very

necessary for the future health of all the organisms

on our planet

I cannot pursue a career in what I desire without a

degree in engineering I want people to breathe

cleaner air drink from cleaner streams and eat food

grown in healthier soil I want to help accelerate the

future of sustainable energy systems I want to slow

the rate of climate change I need a degree in

engineering Robert Swan once said ldquoThe greatest

threat to our planet is the belief that someone else

will save itrdquo It is time for me to begin my journey

of helping our planetrdquo

Scholarship Recipients ndash For the past several

years the Quad City Section has offered two

scholarships for students interested in pursuing an

agricultural engineering related degree Although

the scholarships were open to local high school

students the great majority of the applicants and

recipients have been college students from Midwest

universities

Locally the Quad City Engineering and Science

Council (QCESC) operates a scholarship program

open only to local high school students In 2018

the QCESC awarded 17 scholarships totaling

$68000 to students from 12 area high schools The

success of this program with local students led to

the decision to offer a single $ 1000 Quad City

Section scholarship for 2018 through the QCESC

program

7

Luke Soko (center) receiving the Quad City

Sectionrsquos scholarship from QCESC Scholarship

Chair Tom Hein (left) and QCESC Past President

Jeffrey Richland (right)

This year the Quad City Sectionrsquos scholarship was

awarded to Luke Soko a senior at Bettendorf High

School Luke has participated in football

basketball baseball National Honor Society and

Student Council He is a three year starting varsity

pitcher and was an Honorable Mention linebacker

on the 2017 class 4A semifinalist Bettendorf

football team He also was the Treasurer of the

Class of 2018 for four consecutive years and the

Treasurer of the Student Council his senior year

Additionally Luke has been a volunteer for the

Bettendorf Youth Basketball Association as an

assistant coach for a third grade basketball team and

has been a consistent volunteer for the Bettendorf

Booster Clubrsquos Holiday Boutique Lastly Luke is

currently employed part-time by Hy-Vee on Utica

Ridge in the General Merchandise Department

Luke will be attending Iowa State this fall pursuing

a major in biological systems engineering and a

minor in energy systems andor sustainability Luke

received the scholarship at the 2018 QCESC

Banquet and was also recognized at the Awards

Meeting

Luke submitted the following essay on his career

goals ldquoI aspire to look the following generation in

the eyes knowing that I worked to create a safer

cleaner and healthier place for them to live I am

passionate about renewable energy sciences and the

environment and I would like to major in biological

systems engineering or chemical engineering I

strongly believe that by ensuring and innovating

environmentally friendly chemical processes

throughout businesses biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers help

our world one community at a time I have chosen

these majors because biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers work

to extend the longevity of not only the human race

but other organisms as well It is a profession in an

industry developed to ensure a safer and healthier

tomorrow for all organisms Engineers are one of

the few people that have the knowledge and the

ability to consistently improve the lives of all

people I aspire to be an engineer

I have always desired to help our planet In 7th

grade I conducted a project on hydrogen power and

went on the local JWQC news to show off my kit-

made hydrogen car and explain how PEM fuel cells

function In 8th grade I assembled a team that

worked to design and present a model of an

alternate sustainable energy source we designed an

anaerobic digestion and hydroponics cyborg system

that would feed off a schoolrsquos fecal matter and

organic lunch waste to produce electricity for the

school I desire to turn these little projects into

legitimate products that help shape the future of

energy in our world

I would love to commercialize an aerobic digestion

and hydroponics cyborg system that is cheap small-

scaled and practical for families schools hospitals

communities sewage plants and farm owners I

envision a system in every facility where anaerobic

bacteria eat organic waste to produce biogas which

is then filtered and ignited to produce electricity in a

methane combustion engine Any carbon dioxide

products could be pumped into a greenhouse raising

vegetables outside the system

I would love to engineer fuel cells that are more

practical and efficient It would be an honor to

work on developing a hydrogen fuel cell that does

not use platinum and does not corrode I dream of a

fuel cell system that uses hydrolysis to split water

and yet still produces a high net amount of

electricity from the hydrogen The system could be

fueled with water thus eliminating issues involved

with manufacturing andor transporting hydrogen

Lastly I would love a career that innovates

chemical processes to make them more

environmentally friendly I would also enjoy a

8

career that takes samples from nearby streams and

forests and works with other engineers to ensure the

environmental processes of nearby manufacturing

plants are environmentally friendly I find all of

these professions profoundly interesting and very

necessary for the future health of all the organisms

on our planet

I cannot pursue a career in what I desire without a

degree in engineering I want people to breathe

cleaner air drink from cleaner streams and eat food

grown in healthier soil I want to help accelerate the

future of sustainable energy systems I want to slow

the rate of climate change I need a degree in

engineering Robert Swan once said ldquoThe greatest

threat to our planet is the belief that someone else

will save itrdquo It is time for me to begin my journey

of helping our planetrdquo

Luke Soko (center) receiving the Quad City

Sectionrsquos scholarship from QCESC Scholarship

Chair Tom Hein (left) and QCESC Past President

Jeffrey Richland (right)

This year the Quad City Sectionrsquos scholarship was

awarded to Luke Soko a senior at Bettendorf High

School Luke has participated in football

basketball baseball National Honor Society and

Student Council He is a three year starting varsity

pitcher and was an Honorable Mention linebacker

on the 2017 class 4A semifinalist Bettendorf

football team He also was the Treasurer of the

Class of 2018 for four consecutive years and the

Treasurer of the Student Council his senior year

Additionally Luke has been a volunteer for the

Bettendorf Youth Basketball Association as an

assistant coach for a third grade basketball team and

has been a consistent volunteer for the Bettendorf

Booster Clubrsquos Holiday Boutique Lastly Luke is

currently employed part-time by Hy-Vee on Utica

Ridge in the General Merchandise Department

Luke will be attending Iowa State this fall pursuing

a major in biological systems engineering and a

minor in energy systems andor sustainability Luke

received the scholarship at the 2018 QCESC

Banquet and was also recognized at the Awards

Meeting

Luke submitted the following essay on his career

goals ldquoI aspire to look the following generation in

the eyes knowing that I worked to create a safer

cleaner and healthier place for them to live I am

passionate about renewable energy sciences and the

environment and I would like to major in biological

systems engineering or chemical engineering I

strongly believe that by ensuring and innovating

environmentally friendly chemical processes

throughout businesses biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers help

our world one community at a time I have chosen

these majors because biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers work

to extend the longevity of not only the human race

but other organisms as well It is a profession in an

industry developed to ensure a safer and healthier

tomorrow for all organisms Engineers are one of

the few people that have the knowledge and the

ability to consistently improve the lives of all

people I aspire to be an engineer

I have always desired to help our planet In 7th

grade I conducted a project on hydrogen power and

went on the local JWQC news to show off my kit-

made hydrogen car and explain how PEM fuel cells

function In 8th grade I assembled a team that

worked to design and present a model of an

alternate sustainable energy source we designed an

anaerobic digestion and hydroponics cyborg system

that would feed off a schoolrsquos fecal matter and

organic lunch waste to produce electricity for the

school I desire to turn these little projects into

legitimate products that help shape the future of

energy in our world

I would love to commercialize an aerobic digestion

and hydroponics cyborg system that is cheap small-

scaled and practical for families schools hospitals

communities sewage plants and farm owners I

envision a system in every facility where anaerobic

bacteria eat organic waste to produce biogas which

is then filtered and ignited to produce electricity in a

methane combustion engine Any carbon dioxide

products could be pumped into a greenhouse raising

vegetables outside the system

I would love to engineer fuel cells that are more

practical and efficient It would be an honor to

work on developing a hydrogen fuel cell that does

not use platinum and does not corrode I dream of a

fuel cell system that uses hydrolysis to split water

and yet still produces a high net amount of

electricity from the hydrogen The system could be

fueled with water thus eliminating issues involved

with manufacturing andor transporting hydrogen

Lastly I would love a career that innovates

chemical processes to make them more

environmentally friendly I would also enjoy a

8

career that takes samples from nearby streams and

forests and works with other engineers to ensure the

environmental processes of nearby manufacturing

plants are environmentally friendly I find all of

these professions profoundly interesting and very

necessary for the future health of all the organisms

on our planet

I cannot pursue a career in what I desire without a

degree in engineering I want people to breathe

cleaner air drink from cleaner streams and eat food

grown in healthier soil I want to help accelerate the

future of sustainable energy systems I want to slow

the rate of climate change I need a degree in

engineering Robert Swan once said ldquoThe greatest

threat to our planet is the belief that someone else

will save itrdquo It is time for me to begin my journey

of helping our planetrdquo

Scholarship Recipients ndash For the past several

years the Quad City Section has offered two

scholarships for students interested in pursuing an

agricultural engineering related degree Although

the scholarships were open to local high school

students the great majority of the applicants and

recipients have been college students from Midwest

universities

Locally the Quad City Engineering and Science

Council (QCESC) operates a scholarship program

open only to local high school students In 2018

the QCESC awarded 17 scholarships totaling

$68000 to students from 12 area high schools The

success of this program with local students led to

the decision to offer a single $ 1000 Quad City

Section scholarship for 2018 through the QCESC

program

Scholarship Recipients ndash For the past several

years the Quad City Section has offered two

scholarships for students interested in pursuing an

agricultural engineering related degree Although

the scholarships were open to local high school

students the great majority of the applicants and

recipients have been college students from Midwest

universities

Locally the Quad City Engineering and Science

Council (QCESC) operates a scholarship program

open only to local high school students In 2018

the QCESC awarded 17 scholarships totaling

$68000 to students from 12 area high schools The

success of this program with local students led to

the decision to offer a single $ 1000 Quad City

Section scholarship for 2018 through the QCESC

program

Luke Soko (center) receiving the Quad City

Sectionrsquos scholarship from QCESC Scholarship

Chair Tom Hein (left) and QCESC Past President

Jeffrey Richland (right)

This year the Quad City Sectionrsquos scholarship was

awarded to Luke Soko a senior at Bettendorf High

School Luke has participated in football

basketball baseball National Honor Society and

Student Council He is a three year starting varsity

pitcher and was an Honorable Mention linebacker

on the 2017 class 4A semifinalist Bettendorf

football team He also was the Treasurer of the

Class of 2018 for four consecutive years and the

Treasurer of the Student Council his senior year

Additionally Luke has been a volunteer for the

Bettendorf Youth Basketball Association as an

assistant coach for a third grade basketball team and

has been a consistent volunteer for the Bettendorf

Booster Clubrsquos Holiday Boutique Lastly Luke is

currently employed part-time by Hy-Vee on Utica

Ridge in the General Merchandise Department

Luke will be attending Iowa State this fall pursuing

a major in biological systems engineering and a

minor in energy systems andor sustainability Luke

received the scholarship at the 2018 QCESC

Banquet and was also recognized at the Awards

Meeting

Luke submitted the following essay on his career

goals ldquoI aspire to look the following generation in

the eyes knowing that I worked to create a safer

cleaner and healthier place for them to live I am

passionate about renewable energy sciences and the

environment and I would like to major in biological

systems engineering or chemical engineering I

strongly believe that by ensuring and innovating

environmentally friendly chemical processes

throughout businesses biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers help

our world one community at a time I have chosen

these majors because biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers work

to extend the longevity of not only the human race

but other organisms as well It is a profession in an

industry developed to ensure a safer and healthier

tomorrow for all organisms Engineers are one of

the few people that have the knowledge and the

ability to consistently improve the lives of all

people I aspire to be an engineer

I have always desired to help our planet In 7th

grade I conducted a project on hydrogen power and

went on the local JWQC news to show off my kit-

made hydrogen car and explain how PEM fuel cells

function In 8th grade I assembled a team that

worked to design and present a model of an

alternate sustainable energy source we designed an

anaerobic digestion and hydroponics cyborg system

that would feed off a schoolrsquos fecal matter and

organic lunch waste to produce electricity for the

school I desire to turn these little projects into

legitimate products that help shape the future of

energy in our world

I would love to commercialize an aerobic digestion

and hydroponics cyborg system that is cheap small-

scaled and practical for families schools hospitals

communities sewage plants and farm owners I

envision a system in every facility where anaerobic

bacteria eat organic waste to produce biogas which

is then filtered and ignited to produce electricity in a

methane combustion engine Any carbon dioxide

products could be pumped into a greenhouse raising

vegetables outside the system

I would love to engineer fuel cells that are more

practical and efficient It would be an honor to

work on developing a hydrogen fuel cell that does

not use platinum and does not corrode I dream of a

fuel cell system that uses hydrolysis to split water

and yet still produces a high net amount of

electricity from the hydrogen The system could be

fueled with water thus eliminating issues involved

with manufacturing andor transporting hydrogen

Lastly I would love a career that innovates

chemical processes to make them more

environmentally friendly I would also enjoy a

8

career that takes samples from nearby streams and

forests and works with other engineers to ensure the

environmental processes of nearby manufacturing

plants are environmentally friendly I find all of

these professions profoundly interesting and very

necessary for the future health of all the organisms

on our planet

I cannot pursue a career in what I desire without a

degree in engineering I want people to breathe

cleaner air drink from cleaner streams and eat food

grown in healthier soil I want to help accelerate the

future of sustainable energy systems I want to slow

the rate of climate change I need a degree in

engineering Robert Swan once said ldquoThe greatest

threat to our planet is the belief that someone else

will save itrdquo It is time for me to begin my journey

of helping our planetrdquo

Luke Soko (center) receiving the Quad City

Sectionrsquos scholarship from QCESC Scholarship

Chair Tom Hein (left) and QCESC Past President

Jeffrey Richland (right)

This year the Quad City Sectionrsquos scholarship was

awarded to Luke Soko a senior at Bettendorf High

School Luke has participated in football

basketball baseball National Honor Society and

Student Council He is a three year starting varsity

pitcher and was an Honorable Mention linebacker

on the 2017 class 4A semifinalist Bettendorf

football team He also was the Treasurer of the

Class of 2018 for four consecutive years and the

Treasurer of the Student Council his senior year

Additionally Luke has been a volunteer for the

Bettendorf Youth Basketball Association as an

assistant coach for a third grade basketball team and

has been a consistent volunteer for the Bettendorf

Booster Clubrsquos Holiday Boutique Lastly Luke is

currently employed part-time by Hy-Vee on Utica

Ridge in the General Merchandise Department

Luke will be attending Iowa State this fall pursuing

a major in biological systems engineering and a

minor in energy systems andor sustainability Luke

received the scholarship at the 2018 QCESC

Banquet and was also recognized at the Awards

Meeting

Luke submitted the following essay on his career

goals ldquoI aspire to look the following generation in

the eyes knowing that I worked to create a safer

cleaner and healthier place for them to live I am

passionate about renewable energy sciences and the

environment and I would like to major in biological

systems engineering or chemical engineering I

strongly believe that by ensuring and innovating

environmentally friendly chemical processes

throughout businesses biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers help

our world one community at a time I have chosen

these majors because biological systems engineers

or environmentally based chemical engineers work

to extend the longevity of not only the human race

but other organisms as well It is a profession in an

industry developed to ensure a safer and healthier

tomorrow for all organisms Engineers are one of

the few people that have the knowledge and the

ability to consistently improve the lives of all

people I aspire to be an engineer

I have always desired to help our planet In 7th

grade I conducted a project on hydrogen power and

went on the local JWQC news to show off my kit-

made hydrogen car and explain how PEM fuel cells

function In 8th grade I assembled a team that

worked to design and present a model of an

alternate sustainable energy source we designed an

anaerobic digestion and hydroponics cyborg system

that would feed off a schoolrsquos fecal matter and

organic lunch waste to produce electricity for the

school I desire to turn these little projects into

legitimate products that help shape the future of

energy in our world

I would love to commercialize an aerobic digestion

and hydroponics cyborg system that is cheap small-

scaled and practical for families schools hospitals

communities sewage plants and farm owners I

envision a system in every facility where anaerobic

bacteria eat organic waste to produce biogas which

is then filtered and ignited to produce electricity in a

methane combustion engine Any carbon dioxide

products could be pumped into a greenhouse raising

vegetables outside the system

I would love to engineer fuel cells that are more

practical and efficient It would be an honor to

work on developing a hydrogen fuel cell that does

not use platinum and does not corrode I dream of a

fuel cell system that uses hydrolysis to split water

and yet still produces a high net amount of

electricity from the hydrogen The system could be

fueled with water thus eliminating issues involved

with manufacturing andor transporting hydrogen

Lastly I would love a career that innovates

chemical processes to make them more

environmentally friendly I would also enjoy a

8

career that takes samples from nearby streams and

forests and works with other engineers to ensure the

environmental processes of nearby manufacturing

plants are environmentally friendly I find all of

these professions profoundly interesting and very

necessary for the future health of all the organisms

on our planet

I cannot pursue a career in what I desire without a

degree in engineering I want people to breathe

cleaner air drink from cleaner streams and eat food

grown in healthier soil I want to help accelerate the

future of sustainable energy systems I want to slow

the rate of climate change I need a degree in

engineering Robert Swan once said ldquoThe greatest

threat to our planet is the belief that someone else

will save itrdquo It is time for me to begin my journey

of helping our planetrdquo
