Asbestos can be found in many forms and places, including:

• Sprayed on fire proofing and insulation• Insulation for pipes and boilers • Wall and ceiling insulation • Ceiling tiles • Floor tiles • Putties, caulks, and cements (such as cement pipes) • Roofing shingles • Siding shingles • Wall and ceiling texture • Joint compound and Plasters *this list is not complete

In 1989, the EPA announced an asbestos ban and phase out. But in 1990, the ban was overturned by a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Essentially, there is not a ban on asbestos, simply regulation to reduce its exposure. It is important to remember that asbestos is still used in some products today, this is why it is so important to test and know what materials are present in your facility. An Asbestos Inspection is required to be performed prior to disturbance (renovation or demolition) of any suspect material; including paint, texture or floor coverings. As a building owner it is your responsibility to prove that there is not asbestos present by having proper documentation. If asbestos is detected it is required that you hire an licensed and certified contractor to perform the abatement.
