GIVING THANKS

The Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Church at Philippi, “I thank my God every time I remember you.”(Phil.1:3) This letter to the Philippians was drafted while Paul was incarcerated in a Roman prison for sharing the gospel. While there, he had time to reflect on his work and on his relationship with those who had supported and labored with him in ministry. He was so grateful for their growing faith and partnership with him in service. While the Thanksgiving season is once again rapidly approaching, I want to take a moment to say THANKS to you. I am similarly grateful to so many of you at Asbury for your support (time, talent, and treasures) that you have shared for your support and partnership in the gospel here in Portland, Jay County, and around the world in our connectional church. We do have a message of redemption through Word and Sacrament to share and good news to proclaim for every person who needs to know our Savior, Jesus Christ. Ours is a broken world, a world that needs good news and hope. So, I’m grateful for so many of you these past weeks that have worked with and along side of me in ministry here at Asbury. I’m also thankful for a place to be able to preach the story of Christ. Perhaps, all of us at Asbury need to pause and reflect about our work and ministry this past year, and give God thanks who makes it all possible. We do have much to celebrate about! And again also, THANK YOU for your financial support reflected in your Estimate of Giving promises for the ministry and pro-gramming at Asbury for 2012. Thank you to those of you who prayerfully considering tithing (10% of your income), increasing your Estimate of Giving . . . or perhaps offering an Estimate of Giving commitment for the first time. I’m thankful for each and everyone of you who have whipped out your checkbooks and bit the bullet to keep the ministry of Asbury alive. While stewardship is not a once a year event . . . along with your fiscal contributions . . . we also continue to need donations of your time and talents to our work teams and the events that make our congregation thrive. I always look forward to seeing you in worship . . . and my heart is full of thanks and praise to God as we come to adore and praise our Savior God . . . as He is here to meet us and strengthen us through His Word . . . the Sacraments . . . and our fellowship with one another as we journey together.

GETTING READY

The first Sunday of Advent this year falls on the last Sunday of November (Nov. 27th). Therefore as we move from the theme of Thanksgiving . . . we will begin to immediately prepare for the Advent and Christmas season in the church which again points us toward the source of our faith, Jesus Christ. God came to you and me in the form of flesh . . . a baby in Bethlehem’s manager. I would like to share with you a reflection written entitled, “Getting Ready for Company” written by former editor, Ralph Baker, of the Interpreter’s Magazine, of the United Methodist Church. What Ralph communicated in his writing is well-worth our consideration as we prepare our hearts during this Advent and Christmas season.

Early Saturday morning the telephone rang. The friendly voice on the other end said, “We are in Bowling Green, coming to Nashville. How about getting together for dinner tonight?”

Pastor’s tidbits continue . . . The day was spent picking up the family room, cleaning the house Making a trip to the grocery and fixing the dinner. It was a day of eager anticipation followed by a delightful visit with good friends. Then, it was over and we all went back to our regular routines. Advent is like that. We clean the house; hang the traditional decorations; enjoy the special dishes of the season; and celebrate the coming of Christ into the world with songs, worship and candles. Then Christmas passes and we go back to our regular routines carrying with us additional memories. During the season we prepare to celebrate traditions and memories of Christ’s coming as if awaiting an eagerly anticipated guest. When Christmas comes, I find it ties me again to the root of my faith – born in a stable, laid in a manger, announced by angelic voices, revered by common folk and nobility alike, then crucified for weary humanity. Realizing that it is not so for everyone, I hope the preparation and celebration of Jesus’ coming will bring you . . . peace and blessings! (Interpreter’s, Nov.-Dec. 1994) I might add . . . for that someone who doesn’t know Jesus and His message of salvation . . . take the opportunity to share your your witness of faith in Him and the joy and peace He has brought to your life.

May each of you experience peace and Christ’s blessings this Holy Season!

Pastor Tim

NOVEMBER SERMON TOPICS

November is perhaps one of the autumn months I really enjoy. As most of you know, Summer is my favorite season of the year. November; however is a vivid reminder to me that time marches on because an-other birthday is etched on the calendar for myself, and we also celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Celebrating Thanksgiving always reminds me that I need to be more intentional in taking a few moments each day to thank God for the blessings and ways in which He has provided for me/us. Yes, the greatest blessing of all is that “Christ absorbed our sins in his body on the cross” and then came out of the grave to be our resurrection and life. Therefore, new life is ours through baptism and our profession of faith. For this we can never praise God enough. Do you know the things for which you are thankful? Each Sunday morning at Asbury Church we have the opportunity to gather for worship to thank and Praise God for who He is and what He has accomplished in our lives. The following service of worship and activities are available to all persons. Worship Services are available at 8:00 a.m. (abbreviated and informal … in chapel), 9:00 a.m. (traditional with pipe organ, choir, and bells … sanctuary), 11:15 a.m. (Praise Café in Fellowship Hall, contemporary with band and a light meal) Sunday, November 6 (All Saints Sunday) We will remember those from November 2010 – October 2011 who have gone on before us and now rest from their labors in the church militant. A candle will be lit in memory of them.

ADVENT SERMON SERIES . . . . This series takes a different approach to the celebration of Christmas, looking at the gifts given to us through the coming of Jesus Christ into the world. Not only do we receive forgiveness and salvation through him, we gain power, joy, fulfillment and purpose. The way we re-spond to God's gifts to us, in turn, becomes our gift to him.

THE CHORDS VOCAL ENSEMBLE from Fort Wayne, Indiana will present their unique style of music ministry during the 10:00am Special Morning Worship Service on Sunday, November 20th, 2011 at Asbury United

Methodist Church, 204 East Arch Street, in Portland, Indiana. The ten-member choral group plans to present a special program of contemporary settings of traditional songs and hymns. The CHORDS ENSEMBLE is proud to

have as their piano accompanist Mr. Alexander Klepach – current Principal Pianist for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and renowned Concert Artist. Also joining CHORDS at Asbury will be Guest Organist, Mr. C. Gregory Childs from Churubusco, IN, and brass players Jim Kibby, Todd Ward, Tony Alessandrini and Bill Anders. Asbury UMC’s own fine Sanctuary Choir under the direction of Ms. Sharon Newman will be joining the CHORDS VOCAL ENSEMBLE on

three musical selections.

CHORDS is accompanied by acoustic piano, bass guitar, organ and brass instruments and is recognized as one of the premiere vocal groups in Indiana. Come experience this unique and wonderful ensemble in Asbury United

We are so happy you have invited us to spend this time of worship with you.

CHORDS is a unique musical group. We are an ensemble of male voices, but we sing music written for SATB choirs. There are no “high” tenors in our group as you might hear in a Gospel Quartet or a Barbershop Chorus. Our “Lead” singers cover the traditional soprano part and our “Baritone” singers handle the tradi-tional alto part. The members of CHORDS enjoy singing music in this unique manner. The CHORDS Vocal Ensemble was formed in 1988 in preparation for the 1989 Saint Joseph UMC Sanc-tuary Choir Tour to Detroit, MI. I had chosen a few tunes I felt suited a smaller ensemble and invited eight people to prepare three tunes for the tour. Amazingly, seven of the original eight singers still perform with the ensemble!

In 1992, after one of our members left Fort Wayne, CHORDS made the decision to disband. We didn’t all sing together again until the Fall of 2004. After only one four-hour rehearsal on a sunny afternoon in September, we made our comeback debut at Saint Joseph UMC in Fort Wayne. After twelve years, it felt as though we had never parted. In other words, it felt great! Since beginning our “second-life,” CHORDS has sung well over 300 music presentations in and around the Fort Wayne, Indi-ana area. Our group is somewhat unique in that we sing only one weekend per month, but usually present three to four pro-grams per weekend. Additionally, CHORDS has presented “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the Three Rivers Festival Parade, a Wizards baseball game, a Tin Caps baseball game, and has performed dozens of concerts at private and community social functions. We greatly appreciate our time together today. We certainly hope you enjoy our music, but I’ll let you in on a secret. We would enjoy singing together even if no one was here to listen! However – you being here makes it even better. Thanks again, and ENJOY!

Measuring our faithfulness to Christ and His Church on . . .

Stewardship: Needed weekly to meet Asbury’s 2011 Budget: $6,112.00 Received: October 23, 2011 - $6,057.02 Budget Requests to date: $268,928.00 Actual Receipts to date: $267,190.33 Expenses to date: $267,584.81

Knee Mail How are you and your family going to celebrate Jesus’ Birthday on December 25, 2011? Are you remembering it’s not your birthday, it’s Jesus’ Birthday we are honoring. The challenge is this – to honor Jesus, spend only half as much on your Christmas gifts as you normally do and bring the other half to church for a Christmas missionary gift to others. Last year we gave

$17,310.00 on this project. These gifts were given to help Miss Lillian’s Orphanage, feed blind widows, feed street kids, and help build an elementary school all in Axum Ethiopia. There are special cards free for your use on the Ethiopia table. You may give these cards to your family members and friends stating you have given a gift in their name to a person in need.

Thoughts before Jesus’ Birthday on December 25, 2011.

John Wesley said, “Save all you can – give all you can.” John Wesley said, “To spend our God – given resources on luxuries while others lack of ne-cessity is a misuse of God’s resources.” Jesus’ brother James said, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” James 1:27.

Mission refers to the positive difference made in the lives of people beyond the inner circle of our church.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED . . .

Regardless of the size and structure of any congregation, the sourcing of layperson(s) doing ministry is important, and also having a back-up system in place is critical in the event of illness, or any other emer-gency that perhaps could arise. Having served as your pastor this past year I have been confronted with this need that has been before us in our office for secretarial responsibilities, payroll, and disbursements. There is also a need for additional assistance in the area of receipts and posting contribution(s) data. Currently, I have asked Julie Tarr to be trained to be a back-up for Denise for administrative responsibili-ties . . . including learning the software program for our payroll, and disbursements. Julie will be trained by Denise and can be a fill-in if Denise should be off work for an extended period of time. Since Julie is cur-rently on staff, this eliminates additional funding for training, and also she would be responsible for the addi-tional responsibilities in addition to her current job responsibilities. Of course, any changes that should oc-cur and it being long-term, the Staff-Parish Committee would have to process and make viable decisions. Bob Vance has also indicated that he would be interested in being trained as a back-up for disbursements and payroll . . . but not the secretarial and administrative responsibilities of the position. I have also had conversation with Joanna Stone, our volunteer Financial Secretary and Judy Zearbaugh. Judy Zearbaugh has consented to be the back-up personnel for Joanna, our Financial Secretary for the post-ing of contribution(s) data. Joanna will begin her training of Judy the first of 2012. Stephanie Heath is also working on a set of Standard Operating Procedures for our various financial routines so that everyone has a reference for how things should be done . . . for both contributions and disbursements. Change for the sake of change must not rule the baseline of every decision we make. However, sensitiv-ity to the needs in this area of ministry will hopefully ensure us a plan and stability in case of an emergency. We are deeply appreciative of our compensated employees and our lay volunteers at Asbury who give of their time, talents, and resources. If you have any questions . . . feel free to direct them to me . . . or our Staff-Parish Chairperson.

Staff/Parish Notes With Christmas just around the corner, people are busy making their lists and checking them twice. As you make your list, please remember the staff members of Asbury. The Staff/Parish Committee made the decision to not ask members to donate as a group for a gift. That decision does not diminish what our staff does on a daily basis and the amount of time they give to Asbury. When you count your blessings, please think of the people that work diligently behind the scenes to make Asbury our church. Best wishes to you and your family as we enter this wonderful holiday season.
