    Pearls:A Perfect Choicewith Layne Gautreau

Todays pearl jewelry is not something your grandmother everdreamed of having. The excitingnew designs available these daysare no longer limited to plainstrands of round pearls in differentformal lengths.

Pearl jewelry today comes indozens of eye-catching new combinations for necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and pins. Thereare classic round pearls blendedwith brightly colored gemstones, pearl designs made up of many different strands of pastel pearls,

and elegant pearl and diamond combinations of exquisite beauty. There are also many new stylesfeaturing freshwater pearls inround, semi-round, and ovalshapes with gold or silver spacers, and there are richly colored, highgloss Tahitian pearls in fascinating

dark shades including purple, green, peacock blue, bronze, beige, and silver.

Among the many fashion trendsthis year are white gold lariat necklaces with rainbow pearlaccents, pearl station necklaceswith individual pearls separated bydifferent lengths of gold chain, and lavish torsade necklaces andbracelets made of twisted strandsof multi-colored pearls.

Pearls have always been one of themost popular gifts. Now theyreeven more alluring and appealingthan ever.

Jewelry DoctorIs your watch really waterproof?

    Going Swimming?

Most watches are not actuallywaterproof. In fact, all watchessold in the USA cannot legally becalled waterproof. Instead, theterm water resistant is used todescribe the ability of a watch towithstand some exposure to water. And the degree of waterresistance is usually marked on the watchs face.

How much water resistance youneed depends on your level ofactivity. A watch that is waterresistant to 30 meters can besplashed with water but not submerged. A watch with 50m onthe dial can be submerged (such as in the shower) but not for any

length of time. A rating of 100 meters is OK for swimming, diving, or snorkeling, while a rating of 200meters means the watchcan be used for recreational scuba diving.A rating of more than 200 meters is essential forthose participating inactive water sports andserious divers.

    The OldFashion

WayDating is so superficial these days.We have facebook status, texts, dating sites, that just get in theway of really getting to knowsomeone. So, here are a fewpointers to keep in mind whendating. Take note guys!

Texts are alright, calling is better.

In this time of supersonic speedaccessibility, dont text all thetime. Make time out to call a galthat youre interested in. Texts donot convey true to emotion andreal communication. Its prettysimple-a text relationship is not areal relationship.

Ask ahead of time for a date.

Dont ask last minute for a date.Thats truly disrespectful of awomans time and her schedule. Also, when you make a plan, itgives you both time for anticipa-tion!

    Day Dates are good!

Dont get stuck on dinner and amovie. When you make plans foran activity date, it allows you toreally get to know someone. Itcreates a great bonding experiencethrough by having some qualitytime together. So, perhaps you cancook a meal, go fishing, take ayoga class or go bowling! Justhave fun and get to know eachother!

    Dont oogle over other females!

One of the biggest things for awoman is feeling like shes theonly woman in the world, in hermans eyes anyway, so dont breakyour neck looking at otherwomen. Its disrespectful for oneand secondly, women will thinkyoure not completely interested.

    Dont discuss your ex.

Its one thing if you and your datehave some commonality with rela-tionships or exes, but if a man isonly discussing his ex, then its areal bummer and a woman is likelyto not go out with him again.

Make PLANS when you make a date.

Its ok to be spontaneous sure, butfor the most part, when you ask agal out, make plans. Dont lookat your date and ask where shewants to go when you pick her up.Having a plan for a date, meansyou have plans in your life. Get it?

    Take things slow.

Even if you feel very stronglyabout a woman, hold back on allthe feelings, at least initially. Takeyour time and get to know some-one. Then slowly, when the timeis right, express your feelings in asincere way.

    Actions speak louder than words.

Make sure what you say and whatyou do align. It is very true thatwomen dont forget anything, soits really important that if you sayyoull do something or believe insomething that your actions reflectthat.

    Dont be a show off.

This means, is that you dont haveto spend a lot on a date to try toimpress. The kind of guy thatgoes overboard with this is usuallya big turnoff. A picnic, walkaround the LSU lakes, or movieand a pizza are great as long as theconversation and laughs are good. Most women arent blown awaywith you blowing all your cash fora date.

Women still like an old fashionedman. Open doors, ask if she needsanything, and dont park near apuddle when parking your vehicle. Its the simple things really. Thesmallest chivalrous gestures add upto women.

So, there you have it! One thing Ican say is that living in the Southis a good thing. Most southernmen have really got these top 10down pat!

    No DentalInsurance? No Problem!

    By Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

As the healthcare debate ragesnationally, Dr Calvin Bessonetand Ascension Premier Dentalhave decided to do somethingtangible to help individuals andfamilies afford quality dentalcare. Statistically speaking, more than 60% of Americansdont have dental insurance. This means that a large majorityof people here locally delaydental procedures, which is notgood for dental health or over-all healthcare. A recent reportby CBS News indicated dentaldecay as a contributing factor inmany seemingly unrelatedproblems... including employment issues, heart disease and childhood schoolabsences.

Even here in Ascension Parishwe see kids in our practice whoare in chronic pain because a

simple cavity was not caught intime. In some circumstancesthat cavity was not caughtbecause the parents perceivedthat they could not afford dental care. By the time thepain for the child is unbearable... the cost of solvingthe problem has escalated twoor three times over what itwould have been if caught ayear earlier. This roadblock todental care is a huge problem inour community. The solutionthat Dr. Bessonet has found isvery simple... and may prove tobe a model for healthcarereform across the board.Numbers dont lie... and theynow have a system where families can get earlier preventative and less expensivedental care. The program iscalled QDP - Quality DentalPlan (QualityDentalPlan.com),which is now rolling outnationally across the nationthanks to Dr. Bessonet andother forwarding-thinking dentists.

Quality Dental Plan is offeredto both children and adults atan inexpensive yearly fee and is

an alternative to dental insurance that can cost in thethousands of dollars for minimal benefits. Patients usingQuality Dental Plan can gettwo dental visits, two teethcleanings, exams, x-rays, andsignificant procedural discountsby being a member. These procedures include restorativecare, like fillings, crowns, rootcanals, implants, IV sedationeven cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics!

I sat down with my frontoffice team and saw how muchmoney was going to insurancecompanies, claim forms administration and collectionscosts. We also calculated howmany hundreds of extra dollarsfamilies were spending by notcatching potential problemsthat we could have found during a simple annual dentalexam. When I began to runthese numbers with other dentists around America... wefound that we could offer ourpatients free initial exams, free exam x-rays, free teeth cleanings and as much as 15%off other procedures simply by

creating our own in-house dental savings plan. The resultwas QDP... and Dr. Bessonet isproud to offer it all people whoare interested. This one simple step has allowed us toeliminate the insurance company middleman... andthose savings are going rightback into the pockets of peoplehere locally. Im really proudto be part of this cost-savingsmovement. This is a great system for making dental caremore affordable.

If you do not have dental insurance or you are looking foran alternative to save money onyour treatment please give Dr Bessonet and AscensionPremier Dental a call at 225-673-6910 and we will behappy to explain the membership plan in detail andanswer any questions you mighthave. Dutchtown Physical Therapy along with Downtown Physical Therapy -Highland Road are pleased to announce a new program that addresses concussion management for young athletes.

The Comprehensive Concussion Management Program Consists of education, balance, coordination and neurological testing which allows us to

    determine a pre-injury baseline.

This baseline can help identify developmental and physical factors which can be addressed to improve your child's sports performance.

In the case of a concussion, this program allows us to compare the post injury results to yourchild's pre-injury objective baseline data.

The data collected during the pre-injury baseline can be used to help you and your child's medical provider make sound decisions and ensures your child's safety. The program helps take the guesswork out of decisions regarding returning to play.

Educating and managing sports concussions are crucial for young athletes and we are working hard to help the Ascension and Baton Rouge area parents have the opportunity to

    keep their children's head safe.

  • Can I WriteMy Own Will

People often ask me whether theycan write their own will. After all, they know who should receivetheir property and there must bea form for a will available on theinternet. My answer to theirquestion is this: Sure, you canwrite your own will; people writ-ing their own will is great for myprobate business because it oftencosts more in legal work to fixthe problems with a do-it-your-self will than it would have costto draft a will or the other appropriate estate planning document in the first place. Asyou will see, the question youshould be asking is not whether

you can write your own will, butwhether you should write yourown will.

Louisiana law specifically allowssomeone to draft their own will;this type of will is called an olographic will. To be valid, anolographic will must be entirelywritten, signed and dated in thetestators handwriting. To probate an olographic will, twowitnesses familiar with the testators handwriting must testify that they know the willwas written by the testator in hisown handwriting. While thisusually makes the will probateprocess a little more difficult andcostly, a handwritten will can bevalid in Louisiana.

Although you can write your ownwill, the Louisiana Civil Code isoften confusing in this area. Thismakes it difficult for those whodo not practice law regularly tobe able to effectively understandand use it appropriately. In fact, even Louisiana lawyers who donot practice in the estate plan-ning area regularly are oftenreluctant to write wills as estateplanning often requires specialized knowledge of tax law, property law, debtor-creditor lawand community property law.

Also, software that is available toattorneys to draft wills in otherstates will not work in Louisianabecause our laws are so much different than that of other states.

Wills also often include manyterms of art that if not usedcarefully, can have much differentimplications than what wasintended. Several years ago, I wasinvolved in a case where a wifewrote her own will and left all ofher money to her husband. They had no children together.Although she had several hundred thousand dollars worthof savings bonds, her siblingssued her husband and arguedthat the savings bonds were notmoney and therefore theyshould get them instead of him. This case was tied up in court formany years before the judge finally ruled that the husbandwould receive the savings bonds.Unfortunately, it cost him a lot oftime and money to receive whathis wife wanted him to get. Thistime and expense could havebeen avoided had she seen aqualified estate planning attorneyto help with her will.

An AARP article actually advisesagainst Do It Yourself wills. Asthe article points out, if a willdoes not conform to legalrequirements, your property maybe distributed as if you had nowill at all. In that case, having adefective will could mean that the

people you want to receive yourproperty do not receive it. Evenworse, it could mean that peopleyou dont want to receive yourproperty (like an ex-spouse) mayhave control over property thatpasses to your minor children.

While we are all looking for ways to save money these days, drafting your own will is probablynot where you should try to takematters into your own hands. Aproperly drafted will places yourproperty into the possession ofthose you wish to receive it,when you want them to receive itand how you want them toreceive it. It should also minimize unnecessary administrative costs and tax liabilities for your heirs. This taskshould be left to trained professionals to make sure thatthe wealth you have accumulatedthroughout your life is passeddown according to your wishes. The peace of mind you get fromknowing your legacy is protectedwill be worth the extra expense.

Mrs. Melancon has engaged in the practice oflaw in Louisiana for the past 17 years. The pri-mary focus of her practice is estate planning, special needs planning, elder law and probate. She is also accredited by the VA to give adviceregarding veterans benefits. Chemical Peel Q & AWhat are the benefits of a Chemical Peel?

Everything from sun exposureand aging to acne and cloggedpores can leave you with unevenskin tone, fine lines, scarringand a lackluster complexion. If you want your skin to looksmoother, younger and mostimportantly, vibrant, a chemical peel can make a significant difference.

Does it make my skin literallypeel off?

The extent of peeling variesaccording to the person and thedepth of the peel. Not everyoneactually peels following a chemical peel. The peelingprocess depends on the type and strength of peel youve had, but many dont call fordowntime. For example, thecommon alpha-hydroxy and glycolic acid peels have little or no recovery time.

    Who can get aChemical Peel?

Ask Tony:You said you grewup in Ascension;tell us about yourfamily now?Ive been married to my wife,Lisa, for 29 years. We raisedour family here in AscensionParish. Our oldest son,Anthony III, and his wife,Amanda, are raising their children, Anthony IV and Ava,in Ascension Parish. Our second son, Aaron, also livesin Ascension Parish as doesour daughter, Angelica, andher husband, John Rogillio, and their son, Fitz. BothAngelica and Amanda areexpecting, which will bring ourgrandkid count to five!

Our roads andtraffic are horrible! Whatsyour plan to help?I will fight to pass legislationthat ensures that AscensionParish receives a fair share ofroad tax dollars by dedicating25% of all gasoline taxes collected in Ascension to stayin Ascension. This wouldmean that we would see amajor road project every 2 or3 years instead of every 2 or 3decades. The biggest problemthat we have isn't that thereisn't enough money to fix ourroads; the problem is howthose funds are allocated. Iam truly bewildered that ourState can justify a half-billiondollar bridge from St.Francisville to New Roads that has almost no traffic, while major traffic congestionright here continues to getworse and worse.

If education is soimportant, will youmake it a priority?I want Ascension Parishschools to be strong for mygrandchildren, and I wantthem to attend a first-rate university right here inLouisiana. Then, I hope thatthey will find great paying jobsright here in Ascension Parish.I will place a priority on qualitypublic school education, onsound funding for our colleges

and universities, on fully funding TOPS, and on attracting job creating industryto Louisiana. My grandchildrenand all the children inAscension parish deservenothing less.

How will you fixthe state budget? As the State budget continuesto spiral out of control, perhaps my most valuableasset will be my vast knowledge of governmentfinance and balancing budgets. Among my responsibilities at the Sheriff'sOffice was managing a $34million budget. At the Sheriff'sOffice, we operated on simpleprinciples: Fully fund essentialmissions, balance recurring

expenses with recurring revenue, save money formajor capital projects, andremember that we are onlystewards of the taxpayers' dollars. Im proud that theSheriff's Office hasn't sought atax increase in nearly 20 yearsand firmly believe governmentshould live within their finan-cial means.

You say youre aproven leader. What does thatmean?Hard work and ethical leadership are essential to thesuccess of any organization, the first takes effort and thesecond takes character. It iswhat we should expect, but

don't always get, from ourpublic leaders. While Im bestknown as Chief Deputy of theAscension Parish Sheriff'sOffice, I have been recognizedfor my leadership ability inevery organization Ive beenaffiliated with. Not only did Iwork my way to the highestlevel of leadership at theSheriff's Office, I was electedby my pears to be President ofhis Rotary Club, President ofthe LSU Law EnforcementInstitute, President of theLouisiana Chapter of the FBINational Academy Associates, and Chairman of theLeadership Ascension Alumni Committee.

Whats your number one priority in the legislature?Putting Ascension Parish first. With so many important issues infrastructure, education, thebudget facing the next legislature, its difficult to saywhat the number one issuewill be. But, my number onepriority as a public servant willalways be to put AscensionParish first. Its what Ive donemy entire career, and its whatI will continue to do as yournext state representative.

You've probably heard these linesbefore; "Man, I don't know how Imissed him". He was standing broadside at about sixty yards. He wasone of the best deer I've ever seen. Ormaybe, I saw him coming from abouta hundred yards away. Every now andthen he would stop and strut. He evengobbled two times after I saw him. Ican't believe I missed that turkey. All Ihad to do was wait until he clearedthat last sapling and stretch his neckout. How about this one, I had him tothe boat. I could see the hook in thetop of his mouth. He was sooo BIG. Ishould have waited for the net. I hadhim beat but I got too excited andtried to throw him in the boat. Thatmistake cost me the fish of my lifetime.

We've all had certain opportunitiesin our life that we've let slip right outof our hands. I can't help but thinkback to certain situations and decisionsthat I made in my life involving jobcareers, relationships, etc. At times Ihave to wonder how different my lifewould be at this moment if I wouldhave made different choices.

We're basically responsible for thedecisions we make in our lives and howwe influence other people along thatjourney. For them to understand andenjoy the things that we do as outdoorsmen is very important for thefuture of hunting and fishing. I have, naturally, introduced many people tothe outdoors. Plenty of the people aremy own family and kin. There's beendozens others just by acquaintance (onjobs, etc.) that I've had the pleasure tointroduce to hunting and fishing. Some became avid sportsmen andsportswomen and still continue toenjoy the outdoors today. There's beena few that did not fully acquire the passion, but just as importantly is thefact that those people now understand, accept and respect the reason those ofus that hunt and fish enjoy that way oflife. That is a blessing in itself. To thisday, I can't say that I've ever broughtanyone hunting or fishing that did nothave a good time.

The Louisiana Department ofWildlife and Fisheries has recentlylaunched a new program to increaserecruitment of people to enjoy the outdoor activities available to them. The program is named The HunterHeritage program and focuses on

bringing more hunters afield, butcamping, fishing, and bird watchingare other acceptable activities of theprogram. The intent of the program isfor seasoned veterans of the outdoorsto mentor those who have never hadthe opportunity to be shown the insand outs of hunting. Although most ofthe program focuses on children, menand women of all ages are encouragedto join the program. More info on theHunter Heritage program can befound by contacting :LHHP Program,LA Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries,5652 Hwy 182, Opelousas, LA 70570.

Just recently I ran into an old working partner of mine. We hadworked together for several years buthave now been apart for about a year. After a few moments of conversationhe reminded me that I had promisedto bring him hunting someday. Nowthis guy is in his late forties and no onehad offered to bring him hunting yet. I acknowledged that I had promised tobring him hunting someday. Weexchanged phone numbers again andcome this October I will bring him onhis first squirrel hunt. I've got a goodone here and I'm going to put him inthe boat. He won't get away, if he doesit'll be my fault. This will be a newlicensee, new revenue and new mentorfor the future. We all have people likethis in our lives. By all means, don't let a good fish get away...

As we endure the endlesspolitical ads prior to ourOctober primaries-Im againstCommon Core! Yeah, butyou supported commonwhores!-in this state, one canonly imagine what we canexpect next year on the national level.

After the first Republicandebate drew over 20 millionviewers (Somebody said,Wasnt there a ball gameon?), the second one onSeptember 16 will probablyescalate in name calling(Classless. Bimbo. Dr.Knowlittle. Non-believingheathers.) and probablyshould not be watched withsmall children or while operating heavy machinery.

But, alas, my press deadline isbefore the debacle-uh, debate- so I am left with purespeculation as to which candidate can distance himself-or herself- from the field.

Damn, Im starting to soundlike Im going to the track-which, come to think ofit, might not be a bad methodof predicting the outcome.Lets break out a DRF-no, nota Daily Racing Form-a DebateRepublican Format-and see ifwe can separate contendersfrom pretenders.

    Lets start with the favorite

    1. Donald Trump-Has come out of the gate

smoking and holds the earlylead. Question is-will he standup to the pressure when thereal running begins or collapselike one of his bankrupt casinos.Has trouble passing the eyetest with his dishelved maneand his immigration standmakes it difficult to find aMexican jockey to ride.Despite the drawbacks and alack of class, his stable remainsconfident with the optimisticslogans, We shall overcomb, and There will be helltoupee!

    2. Jeb Bush-Well-bred entry, as both his

father and brother won high-stakes races. Will be heavilybacked financially, especially thecloser it gets to post time.

Distracters point to race-fix-ing scandal in Florida in 2000and overexposure of family

name. Some say Bush entriesare like Caddyshack movies. They should have stopped at one.

    3. Ben Carson-Longshot darkhorse is mak-

ing strides on the leaders withhis practical racing strategy.

Hey, this isnt brain sur-gery, his handlers have pointedout. Has the backing of trackveterinarians, pool hustlers andBugs Bunny fans and othersknown as Doc.

Lack of experience sticks outon the race card but some fansfall in love with first-timestarters because theyve never lost a race.

    4. Carly Fiorina-Only filly in the race that has

traditionally favored males.Spirited mare who vaulted intothe top tier with a good show-ing against much weaker lasttime out.

A couple bad races mar thepast performances and has areputation of overworking herstock and then watching it risewhen she leaves. Accused ofrunning an entry (HP) into theground and now wanting to doit again on the highest level.Know her early.

    5. Rand Paul-Free-spirited sort whose Dad

ran similar campaigns but couldnever win the big one. Tough

to rein in at times and may bebetter suited for the PonyExpress since he believes theonly thing the FederalGovernment should do is deliver the mail.

Rambles all over the placeand tends to lose track fromtime to time. Has been knownto make a spectacle of himself.

    6. Mike Huckabee-

Has not run well from this postas he claims its too close to 6-6-6. Reminds followers of1991 Kentucky Derby favoriteHoly Bull who finished 10thbut rebounded to beat DevilHis Due in the Woodward.

Supreme Court. Refused to begelded early in his career forfear people might call himMichelle.

    7. Chris Christie-Has come in overweight in

his last 10 races but has thebacking of Tony Soprano andthe Jersey Boys.

Did not fare well on aSandy track after a storm inthe Northeast. Jumped intothe big race when a concernedsupporter begged him, Pleaseconsider running, then foundout later she was trying to gethim to start jogging to loseweight.

Persistent questions abouthow weight will affect his performance have him givingstock answer, Well cross thatbridge when we come to it.

    8. Ted Cruz-Canadian bred who some-

times become obsessed withwhere other winners were born.Big time racing may not be hiscup of tea but his vet Dr. Seusshas him on a steady diet ofGreen Eggs and Ham.Another who has a tendency to

ramble on-and on-and on. Not a big fan of female entries.Guess you could call him afilly-buster.

    9. Marco Rubio-Lost a chance to gain some

real ground when he stoppedfor a drink of water during acrucial moment in his biggestrace. However, if this were abeauty contest, he would be theeye candy winner and if youdare to look a gift horse in themouth, he does have the bestteeth.

Yet to challenge Trump forthe lead because he seems con-tent to just play to the favoritescrowd. Favorable choice ofjockeys because he understandsEnglish and also entiendoEspanol. Dangerous if hefigures out how to run

    his own race.

    10. Scott Walker-Runs fast and furious and will

be hard to beat based on recentspeed ratings. Oh wait, thatsthe late Paul Walker. Thishard-headed colt has bustedmore teachers, firemen andpolicemen out of their

hard-earned wages because of his unconventional running style.

Very popular with the upper class who own all theconcession rights and like toask, Would you like some frieswith that Koch?

Insists on running on LaborDay so folks wouldnt think itwas a holiday for the workingclass. Didnt attend his highschool reunion (He droppedout of college.) because itincluded the word union onthe invitation.

    And now the also rans

    11. Bobby Jindal-Hard to find a form on him inLouisiana as he was never there.Hard to see him threateningthe leaders although the secondspot in the exacta is not out ofreach. Especially when leadingmare Sarah Palin tells Fox Newsthat Native Americans shouldgo back where they came from-Nativa.

    12. Rick Perry-Hard-riding Texan has fallen

on hard times and is better suited for My Little Pony

these days. Change of equipment-glasses to make himlook smarter-failed miserably.Must avoid mistakes like, Even a broken clock is rightonce a day.

    13. Rick Santorum-Longshot win here could bedisastrous for industry as he isagainst breeding in any way, shape or form-with the exception of the ImmaculateConception.

So there you have thefield for the 2016 RepublicanDerby. Just be careful whenthe horses come on the tracknot to sing the second line ofthe original version of StephenFosters My Old KentuckyHome that goes Its summer, the darkies are gayPolitically correct or not, thatwill not win you favor with anyof the above.

But you know what they say about differences ofopinion-thats what makes ahorse race!

    LastingEffect!

Dedication, the one wordthat we all know and sometimeseven fear is the reason that localgroup The Side Effects Bandhas been successfully moving

crowds for over 15 years. Bandleaders Mark Sides and WadeDuplessis continue to move theband forward through goodand bad times and have beencommitted to providing thebest live entertainment nightafter night.

Along with forming a bandcomes the frustration of losingmembers and replacing themwith others. After struggling tokeep steady members, SideEffects and Bittersweet (twoAscension Parish based bands)merged and became one. When merging the two bands,Duplessis left his position of

drummer, and movedinto a frontman, leadsinger role. A newband was born withtwo lead vocalists, each compliment theother with smoothoverlying harmonies. The merger wasnamed "The SIDEEFFECTS Band",and although some ofthe members havechanged over theyears, Mark and Wadehave been the con-

stant. Since Mark Sides is theoriginal founding member, leadvocalist, keyboard player, andbooking manager. The mem-bers wanted to have Sides lastname incorporated into thebands name and brought manyoptions to the table for consid-eration, eventually Side Effectswas chosen. It was decidedlater to re-name the group"The SIDE EFFECTS Band".The current lineup featuresMark Sides - Keyboards andVocals, Wade Duplessis - LeadVocals and Percussion, Jeremy"JJ Stix" Babin - Drums and

  • The Agonyand theEcstacy ofOnce PlayingFootball

My sister recently gave me anEast Ascension High Schoolfootball program from the year1973. Mom had saved it andshe thought I would enjoy having it.

As I thumbed through thepages I realized, Im gettingolder. Ive seen some of theguys in these photos recentlyand they dont look quite likethey did back then, includingmyself. I think I weighed 80pounds lighter back then. Oh,to be under 200 again.

I started reminiscing aboutthose days and wondered. What in the Hell was I thinking?

    Remember that first day of

practice and how sore you were2 days later.

Remember suffering theridicule of the coaches, such asgold brick, when you asked forthat 2 ozs. of water that waspermitted in the 2 hours ofpractice?

Remember it was this timeof year? The 95 degree daysalong with the occasional shower to lift the humidity levelbeyond 100 percent was pure joy.

Remember the smell of thelocker room? Whats fun aboutthat?

The first photo I came uponwas Head Coach FredFontenot.

Now I have been mad at Fredfor 42 years. He caught mesneaking a drink, in the back ofour car, on the way to an LSUball game. Juno and Don, mypartners in crime, had theredrinks in a washed out cokecup. I had the Orange juicebottle. When Fred called us tostay after practice on Monday. He asked what was in the cups, those buddies of mine said itwas coke in their cups and hebelieved them. He didnt evenask me and proceeded to makeme run whistle stop sprints fora week.

As I said, Ive been mad allthese years. I ran into an oldfriend not long ago and Fredsname came up. He told me ofhow he and another friend gotcaught and were punished. Hetold me of about 10 other stories of how you couldnt getanything past Fred. He gave me

names of bunches of guys thatgot caught. So, I am not madany more. I feel like I am a partof the got-caught fraternity. Ididnt know Fred was a graduate Scotland YardUniversity.

I remember the day wecaught some girls peeking inthe locker room from a secondstory corner window. The nextday we knew theyd be there. We piled up a bunch of dirty, sweaty jocks right in the areathat was visible. After they werelooking in we jumped in,dropped our towel to revealsome full moons.

There was nothing fun abouthaving the foot-ball under yourarms, runningdown the fieldand seeing RandyTroxclair bearingdown on you.You knew thatsoon it would belike night becauseyou were goingto be seeing stars.Coach Dugasonce had a beefwith about 8 ofus that werentworking hardenough. Hemade us get in aring and calledRandy over to bethe BULL in themiddle. After thatbruising I hustledthe rest of mydays.

I rememberhow excited I waswhen Coach Paultold me to takesome snaps undercenter with thefirst team. Iapproached thecenter, who wasChester Laporte.I placed myhands under forthe snap and as Iwas calling out the cadence, hefarted. I jumped back and got awhistle for making the offensejump off sides. Because of that Igot chewed out and had to callanother play. As we approachedthe line I could hear Chestergiggling in his helmet. As Iapproached he looked aroundand had devilish grin. Do youthink I put my hands downthere again. I got whistled andhad to a run a lap.

What was fun about having acoach who was also a teacher? He was Coach Webb. Mostplayers had him for IndustrialArts. One day someone foundout his nick name was Snap.Tommy Reeves tried callinghim that and we all laughed. Allhell broke loose. Not only didwe get extra paper work in classbut we had to see him afterfootball practice. Let me tellyou the name Snap neverpassed my lips.

Remember the first timeShelby Robert walked up,grabbed your face mask andbegan speaking to you with signlanguage. Your head would

twist and shake so much thatyou dare not miss a word hesaid. He could have been ordering a hamburger I wouldnt have known. I was 13and very impressionable.

With all this pain I still lovedmy football days. There aremany more fun stories thanhorror stories. I was once calledto Coachs office because myVolkswagen was parked in themiddle of the practice fields.

There was this time when mybuddy Ram thought hed tryout for football. He was knownfor being a good baseball playerand had the size but had neverput on a football uniform. Hehad this thick bushy black hair. When he put his helmet on theear holes would fill with his hairand stick out like black golfballs. It was so funny I couldnthelp but laugh. Needless to sayhe didnt make it but those fewdays of practice with Ram werepriceless.

It was fun when we staged abeat down on the IstroumaIndians mascot before the allimportant game. Istrouma wasranked #1 in the state. PaulMayon dressed up as theIstrouma Indian Mascot androad out on the field on aShetland pony. As the crowd forIstrouma roared, Don Braud, our Spartan mascot, road out ona Mighty White Stallion of theEast Ascension Spartans. As theSpartan approached to demolishthe Indian his saddle broke andhe fell off his horse. He got upand punched the horse. The

Istrouma side cheered. Thegame pretty much went thesame way.

I played football for at least 6years and have many friends andstories from the experience.

I remember the very lastgame I ever played. At thebeginning of the second half Iwent for a fumble and collidedwith another player head first. Idont remember the secondhalf. I do remember walkingaround the field after everyonewas leaving the stadium. I cameupon Juno. I asked him,Wheres the huddle? He said,We are all on the bus. I had aconcussion and was in the hospital for three days for observation.

The agony and ecstacy ofplaying football is a legacy that Ihold dear. I believe every youngman should try it so one daythey can say, What in the Hellwas I thinking?
