FORT WORTH CIVIL ENGINEER Vol.6 No. 4 w NOVEMBER 2010 1 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT You’re invited! This is your personal invitation to participate in another year of your ASCE Fort Worth Branch activities, from monthly meetings with great programs, great fellowship and great food, to volunteer and leadership opportunities - ASCE has much to offer. Our thanks as a membership to Scott Berman for his outstanding service not only as our past president but in the many years he has served the Fort Worth Branch. Scott will continue to serve in leader- ship positions in the Texas Section. Our newest board member, Devon Tiner, is assuming the role as Trea- surer. Last year’s board member Carl Krogness is this year’s President- Elect and Sam Hinojosa who admirably took care of finances last year is this year’s Vice President/Secretary. We can always find volunteer positions for anyone who would like to become more involved in the Fort Worth Branch, simply let one of your board members know and we will find a place for you. After a couple of years of trying different meeting venues I anticipate the majority of our meetings will be held at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse with an occasional meeting at other locations. Our joint meeting with the UTA Student Chapter will be Monday, No- vember 15, 2010. The Fort Worth Branch will make a donation to the UTA Student Chapter to assist in purchasing a trailer for the Concrete Canoe competition. Our own Fort Worth Branch Younger Member Group will be hosting the 2011 ASCE Multi-Region Leadership Conference on January 28 and 29 at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel in downtown Fort Worth. This conference brings in attendees from Regions 3, 6 & 7 for a two day intensive seminar for Section and Branch Leaders and the Central Re- gion Younger Member Council. It is very informative. Travis Attanasio has spear headed the effort to host this event and is now organizing the conference. Multiple levels of sponsorship are available so please encourage your company to help in this regard. This is your Fort Worth Branch. Your opinions and ideas are always welcome. Please let any board member know how you think we can improve the experience of your ASCE membership! SECTION DIRECTOR’S REPORTBy Stephen Crawford

The Texas Section is pleased to announce that current Region 6 Governor and Past Section President Crespin (Cres) Guzman PE, will become the new Executive Director begin-

ning November 1. Cres brings years of involve-ment with the Society, the Section and with the Austin Branch, and the Section office looks forward to serving the members and Board under Cres’ management.

A note from the current Director, Ottis Foster PE. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the Executive Director of the Texas Section-ASCE these past 2 years. I have enjoyed working with Officers, Directors, and the membership, and I believe the Section is well positioned to continue and improve its work of "advancing the science and profession of civil engineering for the benefit of humanity." I look forward to returning to geotechni-cal practice in the Waco area, and I also look forward to continued participation in Section and Branch activities. Thanks to all of you that support the Section.

James H. Brace Bequest

On October 17, 1957, the ASCE Board of Direction accepted a bequest by James H. Brace, M.ASCE, the proceeds of which are available, in nominal sums, to “unemployed and needy engineers” for payment of their ASCE membership dues.

TREASURER’S REPORTBy Devon Tiner

I’m proud to have been given the honor of safe guarding the assets of the Fort Worth Branch for 2011. The starting balance is $37,927.78. This year we’ve budgeted for a $1,000 UTA student paper con-test, $150 for attendance awards, and a onetime donation of $400 to help the UTA Student Chapter purchase a trailer for their concrete canoe and steel bridge contests. We don’t expect any big revenues from the Younger Member’s Golf Tournament as it is being hosted by the Dallas Branch this year, so your continued support through section dues, attending lunch meetings, and sponsorships is greatly appreciated. Remember, a door prize drawing for a $20 gift card will be held during each of our Branch Meetings randomly selected from those that pre-pay on-line through PayPal.

Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas, along with the Incheon Bridge Project, in Inocheon City, South Korea; the Riverbank Filtration Tunnel and Pump Station, in Louisville, Kentucky; the Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir Dam Restoration Project, in Annapolis, Missouri; and the Washington Dulles International Airport Main Terminal Automated People Mover Station (Package 6), in Dulles, Virginia have been selected as finalists in the competition for ASCE’s 2011 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) Award. This award recognizes a project that makes a significant contribution to both the civil engineering profession and society as a whole.

The winner will be announced at the 2011 Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) gala, which will be held on March 31 at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center, just outside of Washington, D.C.

Fort Worth Branch Transportation and Development institute

The Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI), Fort Worth Branch has come together to select an executive committee, design our bylaws and method of operation, and apply for formal approval as a local branch of the national Transportation and Development Institute of ASCE. The board members have been working towards the goal of developing a group that

will be able to provide additional value for Fort Worth ASCE members involved in transportation and development, as well as bring in those outside of ASCE who are involved in these fields. We will accomplish this through Institute meetings, transportation and development specific speakers, providing opportunities for networking, and assembling research seminars to keep up with the latest developments in these fields.

Our chapter board consists of:• President, Mr. Mike McNerney, PhD, PE• Vice President Mr. Brett Schock, PE, AICP• Secretary Mr. Scott Graves, PE• Treasurer Mr. Scott Hudson, PE• Program Director Mr. Doyle Smith, PE.

We have also begun outreach, through our liaison, Dr. Saty Satyamurti, with graduate students at the University of Texas-Arlington to get the students involved in our chapter.

We hope to hold our first general meeting of the Fort Worth ASCE T&DI membership in the coming months, and will be holding a short organizational meeting following the May ASCE Fort Worth meeting. We would like to invite anyone who is already a member of T&DI, or is interested in hearing more about our Institute to attend. If you have any questions, you may contact Mike McNerney at [email protected], or Brett Schock at [email protected].

UTA STUDENT CHAPTERBy rafael oliveira

On behalf of the ASCE student chapter at UT Arlington, I would like to give you great news. The number of active members has kept grow-ing, and our chapter is looking more united than ever. The UTA ASCE chapter is providing the students with opportunities in various areas, such as field trips, social and professional events, as well as academic opportunities. In addition, we have continued to participate in both the Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions, and we have great hopes of placing really high on each one of them. One of our main goals is to purchase a trailer that the students could use to transport the bridge and canoe to the competition locations. We can't do this alone and we would like to ask for your support. The trailer will pay for itself in the long run, and the money we save from there on can be used to continue providing the UT Arlington students with the various benefits offered through our ASCE chapter. During the ASCE Fort Worth Branch Meeting this November 15th at UTA, we will be

collecting donations that will help us achieve our goal. Your sup-port will be greatly appreciated, and our chapter will highlight your sponsoring efforts by placing your and/or your company's name in our list of sponsors. The list will be displayed during our meetings, in our website, our t-shirts, and on our future trailer. The branch meeting is not the only place we will accept donations. You can contact me at [email protected] for more information about our chapter and for information about where you can send your donation. I would like to thank you in advance for helping support the civil engineering students at the University of Texas at Arlington.
