ASCE-INDOT STRUCTURAL SUBCOMMITTEE

MEETING NO. 48 MINUTES July 8, 2010

The meeting was called to order at 9:15 am by Steve Weintraut. Those in attendance were:

A meeting agenda had previously been distributed and the following items were discussed: 1. The April 13, 2010, meeting minutes were approved as written, and have been placed

on the INDOT website. 2. Tony Zander was not present to discuss semi-light weight concrete and self

consolidating concrete specifications. 3. Mike McCool and Randy Strain spoke about crack control in concrete decks. Only

difference is whether the maximum reinforcement spacing should be 9” or 8”. The group concluded that the maximum spacing will be 8”. A design memo will be issued.

4. The Bridge Design Conference will be on July 27. Anne is working on getting CEUs

through Purdue. 5. Mike McCool, Mike Halterman and Anne Rearick stated that the plan notes for

construction loadings have been finalized. Anne stated that a design memo will be forthcoming showing what wording will need to be shown on the plans. This memo will list what loads and load combinations per AASHTO the designer will need to check.

6. The group discussed the 401 bar in prestressed beams in relation to how they are detailed and limits. Further discussion will be needed. Mike McCool will develop questions or comments for Anne to discuss with AASHTO.

7. The group discussed the use of weld wire reinforcement in approach slabs, bridge

decks and prestressed beams. Steve passed out a handout (see Attachment No. 1). Anne would like to do some additional research before fully committing to using galvanized welded wire reinforcement. Celeste will investigate using welded wire reinforcement in prestressed beams.

8. Jim discussed what he learned about cracking in prestressed beams based on the

Florida DOT memo of 2004 (see Attachment No. 2) and what has been released in Florida in 2010 (see Attachment No. 3). The group discussed Item 4 on page 4-11 and possibly incorporating it into INDOT’s Standards.

Jim mentioned a reference manual called “Manual for the Evaluation and Repair of

Precast, Prestressed Concrete Bridge Products.” He stated that it was a good book which identifies cracking causes and prevention and repairs of these cracks.

9. There was a small discussion on post tensioning. Anne stated that a small group

outside of the structural subcommittee will be developing a post tension section in the Design Manual.
