Dear Friends,
The big news of the week is that the process to begin re-opening our churches
has begun! It will require a fair bit of organization to do this in a way that
respects the safety protocols that the Archdiocese has worked out and insists
we follow in order to be “certified” to re-open. My thanks to staff
members Jim Wojcik and Diane Lawrence, who will be co-leaders of the re-
opening Leadership Team. Also part of that team will be Terri Monaco (Set-
up Captain), George Lyons (Clean-up Captain) and Tom Gull (Greeter
Captain). The Leadership team will organize and train the parish volunteers
helping to manage access to the church and make things as safe as possible,
from a virus contagion perspective. Hopefully you saw the email that went out
on Monday soliciting volunteers. If you have not yet responded and are
willing and able to help, please email Jim Wojcik
at [email protected]. The number of hours per day that we will
be able to have the church open (for no more than 10 people at a time at this
point) will depend on how many trained volunteers we have to help.
If you are interested in seeing the intricacy and detail of the protocols we need
to follow, you are welcome to have a look at them on the Archdiocesan
website: www.archchicago.org/coronavirus/reopening-training.
It is disappointing that we are still not cleared to celebrate public Masses. That
is being put off until the time when the State guidelines allow for at least 50
people to gather at a time. The hope is that we will get permission to bring
more than that into our church, since it is large and people can spread out. But
we will likely need to organize that via an online reservation or registration
system. And everyone will need to wear masks while in the church (that will
be the case even when entering for private prayer). This will certainly take
some getting used to.
A quick thanks to all who once again came through for the St Martin de Porres
food pantry. Last Sunday we received two vans’ worth of groceries! There is a
Blood Drive this weekend. We also have a Virtual Baby Bottle Fundraiser this
week to support Aid for Women. See details on our website at: https://
www.ascensionoakpark.com/apps/news/article/1229701.
It looks like life on campus will soon resume, even if at a reduced level. As we
prepare to mark the Feast of the Ascension on Sunday we give thanks to God
for the many ways He has blessed our parish and our parish families. May
God continue to guide and protect us as we prepare to re-engage.

Zoom Sessions to Discuss Contemporary Issues. In monthly Zoom sessions we will look at articles about
how we are coping as a faithful people with the effects of the pandemic shut-down on our religious practice,
and how events in our faith community might change going forward. The first meeting will be Tuesday, May
26, at 8:00 pm and we will discuss two articles from America magazine.
Zoom Book Discussion. Join us on Tuesday, June 9, at 8:00 pm for a book discussion on Dark Night of
the Soul by St. John of the Cross. Did you know that Pope John Paul II learned Spanish just so that he could
read this book in its original language? This book may be the inspiration that we need for today’s troubled
times.
For more information go to this page on our parish website:

Your Garden Donations
Your garden donations to St. Martin’s
Food Pantry are once again welcome on
Tuesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 7:30
pm. Our Ascension Community
Gardeners will be on hand in the parish
center parking lot to collect your
donations. There are just a few social
distancing precautions we must observe.
In addition to a table for weighing
contributions, a socially distant space
(probably a second card table) will be set
aside for donors to leave their
contributions and to sign-in with their
name and email.

Sunday Readings
May 24, 2020
The Ascension of the Lord
Reading 1
Acts 1:1–11
In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up, after
giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to
them by many proofs after he had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the
kingdom of God. While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for
“the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few
days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
When they had gathered together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom
to Israel?” He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by
his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as
they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. While they were looking intently
at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said, “Men
of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into
heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 47:2–3, 6–7, 8–9
R. (6) God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
All you peoples, clap your hands,
shout to God with cries of gladness,
For the LORD, the Most High, the awesome,
is the great king over all the earth.
R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy;
the LORD, amid trumpet blasts.
Sing praise to God, sing praise;
sing praise to our king, sing praise.
R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.
For king of all the earth is God;
sing hymns of praise.
God reigns over the nations,
God sits upon his holy throne.
R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Reading 2
Eph 1:17–23
Brothers and sisters: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a Spirit of
wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you
may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the
holy ones, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of
his great might, which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the
heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only
in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all
things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.
Gospel
Mt 28:16–20
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him,
they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth
has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I
am with you always, until the end of the age.”

uniquely difficult time for our parish as well as we rely
greatly on donations received during the offertory collection

please make a contribution. Your donation helps support all
of the important work we do. While we are not gathering in
person at this time, our work continues. You can donate online to the Sunday or Easter collection
by using a credit card or checking account via
our GiveCentral webpage, or by texting 'Easter' to (708)
