General news
Dear readers,
ASD-STAN has published 16 new standards and 1 Corrigendum in September, the details will follow on the next pages. There are 2 ASD-STAN originated EN standards published by CEN in September. We would like to remind on REACH seminar: REACH conformity in Aerospace – Seminar for Engineering and Supply Chain. Below are the details: When: 12th of November 2018 (on-site in Berlin and/or Webinar), 29th of January 2019 (on-site in Stuttgart and/or Webinar), How to register? Please complete this form and send it by email to [email protected] For more information see the Flyer
Finally, we want to inform you about the publication of ASD-STAN prEN 7010, Aerospace series — Configuration master — Definition and designation of external threaded fastener product standards. This is the first reach compatible standard of the set of the 7000-series, originating from ASD-STAN D09/WG02 "New REACH compatible standards". On the next 2 pages you will find the input from our experts to inform about some business activities in ASD-STAN Domains and Working Groups.
Thank you and enjoy the read, Andreas Jain Director
Introductory information about our new project ASD-STAN prEN 4879, Aerospace Series — Metallic Materials — Mechanical Properties of Products Produced by Additive Manufacturing
Newsletter
September 2018 Page 2
Over the last years, additive manufacturing has developed from childhood to
adolescence. The curiosity and excitement for the new technology and its new
opportunities in design and manufacturing is now mature. The focus is more and more
on quality aspects: What material properties are reasonably achievable, in a
reproducible way, on a real product rather than just a test-coupon?
Standardization may answer this question by telling the user what level of properties
(e.g. static strength) he can assume for design, and by telling the manufacturer what
material properties need to be achieved to ensure an overall balanced material behavior.
prEN 4879 “Mechanical Properties of Products Produced by Additive Manufacturing”
focusses on metallic materials, manufactured by powder bed fusion with laser beam or
electron beam technology. It appears to be a limitation to only few technologies, but still
leaves a broad field of applications to be considered:
First, the choice of aeronautical materials is large, ranging from Aluminum to Titanium,
Steels, heat-resistant materials like Nickel-Cobalt alloys, and more.
Furthermore, the manufacturing process is not just one process, it's a process chain
where the post-processing has a significant influence on the final properties of the
product. E.g. for Titanium alloys, hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is a common way to reduce
or eliminate voids in the material (such as porosity or lack of fusion). However, fatigue
behavior does not only depend on the materials inner quality, but also on its surface
quality and the technology used for surface treatment.
prEN 4879 aims at providing mechanical and chemical properties for selected materials
that are achievable in an industrial environment, and at providing guidance concerning
the different post treatments, so the user can tailor his own manufacturing process in his
own manufacturing environment to reach the published material properties.

ASD-STAN activities on Unmanned Aircraft systems "UAS"
The D05/WG08 related to “UAS”, which really became active one year ago, took
up the challenge to address the need for standards to support the future EU
regulation for the “OPEN” drone category.
The OPEN category concerns all the drones used by hobbyists or professionals
when the operations remain simple and safe for the public, which currently
represent the large majority of the market in volume.
The manufacturers who are targeting this market will have the possibility to
“mark” their product with the class number identified in the OPEN category from
C0 to C4, depending of the usage and the performances of the drone system. With
this CE marking process, in short term the manufacturer will have a clear quality
label to promote their product on the European market and the customers (remote
pilots) will be allowed to fly with a simple and efficient declarative approach
(registration) to the authority. Over time, all the new drones’ designs that fall
into the OPEN category will have to be marked with the level of compliance
expected by the regulation (delegated act of EASA) in order to fly in Europe.
The timeline to deliver the EN (harmonized standard) is tight if we consider that
the new EU regulation will enter into force beginning of next year. Thus, the
frequency of the D5WG8 meetings is high, working on a monthly basis to finish the
prEN process by fall 2019 and the EN by beginning of 2020.
The D05/WG08 is collaborating intensively with the CEN, the European
Commission and EASA to achieve its goal in time but is still looking for experts
from all the member states. Representing your country at the D05/WG08 to
address this new EN challenge is an exciting opportunity to support the drone
business development in Europe.
To join the D05/WG08 please contact ASAP your National Standard
Organization or ASD-STAN at [email protected]!
