MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYSIA

Assalammualaikum w.b.t. and warm greetings

Co-operatives in the ASEAN countries play a leading role in their respective countries. Indeed, ASEAN co-operative comprises a

membership of 560 million people, which represent 66 percent of the total global co-operatives membership. These co-

operatives involved in various economic and business activities, including agriculture, banking, credit, housing, transportation,

healthcare and many others. These indeed provide opportunities for community income generation through employment and

businesses as well as reducing the cost of consumption and trade for members. Such activities create the co-operative concept

of doing business which influenced various governments in the region to adopt co-operatives as the important vehicles in the

national development agenda and socio-economic development.

In my view, ASEAN Co-operative Organization Trade Exhibition, Conference & Business Matching 2015 (ACOTEX 2015) will

stand as the head-start for the co-operative movement in offering a lot of business potential to the community of ASEAN. The

basic co-operative values of honesty, integrity and trustworthiness will be translated into the principles that emphasize on the

distinct identity and the way of doing co-operative businesses which should stand out as “Co-operative Community Business

Model.” I am pleased to note that most governments in this region have recognized the importance role of co-operatives, and

have proceeded to create appropriate policy and legislative frameworks for the development of this sector.

I sincerely hope that co-operative in ASEAN countries will be more enthusiastic in their hardship to enhance the well-being

environment of all its members.

Thank you.

DATO' SRI MOHD NAJIB TUN HAJI ABDUL RAZAK

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF ASEAN CO-OPERATIVE ORGANIZATION (ACO)

Assalammualaikum w.b.t. and Warm Greetings.

ASEAN Co-operative Organization (ACO) is the umbrella for ASEAN Co-operative movements where it plays its role as the advisor and coordinator of

co-operative members to seek business potential in ASEAN as one of the attractive destination for global co-operative investors and entrepreneurs. I can

say that Malaysia is also another unique good land for global co-operative business community. ASEAN Co-operatives should develop various co-

operative business ventures through the supply chain concept as initiated and suggested by the Chairman of ASEAN 2015 and also The Prime Minister

of Malaysia. Today’s meetings and discussions will highlight the role of ASEAN Co-operative Organization Trade Exhibition, Conference and Business

Matching 2015 (ACO-TEX 2015) where its contribution to ASEAN Co-operative members to strengthening up co-operatives to the next level through the

achievement of Malaysian co-operatives.

How can I say that Malaysia is fantastic and unique country?

Since it was introduced ninety three (93) years ago, there is no denying that the co-operative movement has had an impact on the Malaysian Economic

Development. In 2014, 10,914 co-operatives were registered with Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM) comprises of 5,884,713 individual

members. Based on recent SKM statistic 2014, co-operatives share capital amounting to RM12.8 billion, and total assets worth at RM109.7 billion.

These statistics indicate that co-operatives have had the support from people and undertake activities contributing to economic growth in Malaysia. The

government continuous commitment to co-operative development marked a reflection of confidence in co-operative movement in Malaysia.

Last but not least, I sincerely hope that this message would bring sizable benefits to co-operative members in searching new ideas for all of it members. Thank you.
