1. About the University & Institute

Pravara Medical Trust

Pravara Medical Trust (PMT) is a not-for-profit oriented; non-governmental, charitable organization founded

in 1972 by the local peasants lead by Padmashree Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil, as part of an Integrated Rural

Development Model in remote rural area of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, India. The Model was

acclaimed by the President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam as “Loni PURA Model”. PMT is pioneer in

actively translating all the public health principles and concepts through promoting a “Comprehensive Rural

Health Model (CRHM)” for the last 40 years in rural, drought-prone, and tribal areas of Maharashtra, India

with a mission to “serve the rural poor & marginalized sections of society”. The PMTs Vision is to improve

the productivity of the people, especially rural & vulnerable sections of the society, through better health and

increased „quality of life‟ by making health systems more effective and responsive to the needs & aspirations

of the people.

Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences – Deemed to be University

Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) – is established in 2003 (Notification No.9-11/2000 U.3 of the

Govt. of India), as part of CRHM was promoted by PMT. PIMS- one of the rural medical universities in India,

pioneered in socially meaningful and community oriented medical & allied health sciences education blended

with state-of-art institutional training and service delivery. PIMS attained the status of Deemed University in

2003 under section 3 of UGC act 1956 of Govt. of India and Accredited by NAAC A Grade (CGPA 3.17).

diplomas (M.D/M.S), PG Degree in Dental faculty (MDS), M.P.T., M.Sc. (Nursing), Master of Public Health

(MPH), M.Sc. (Medical Biotechnology), M.Sc. (Pre-clinical & Para - clinical) courses in Medical Faculty,

Doctoral, diploma and certificate programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, medical

biotechnology, public health and other para-medical sciences. PIMS-DU campus has been developed as a self

sufficient township with all modern amenities for supporting 3500 students, staff/faculty and their families, to

2. Centre for Biotechnology

• Introduction

The Center for Biotechnology was established in the year 2001 to

facilitate “Health Sciences and Research Driven” quality

education and training in the field of Biotechnology. The academic

programmes are framed to take up either a research career or get

recruited in the healthcare/ pharma industry or hone the skills to

become successful entrepreneur.

Medical Biotechnology is a specialized disciplines dealing with the

understanding & use of living cells or any biomaterial and its derivatives in health and diseases. It has an

interdisciplinary approach that combines the knowledge of fundamental sciences including cell biology,

biochemistry, genetics and many others for its application in the advancement of medicine in terms of disease

diagnosis and development of therapeutics, neutraceutics etc. Therefore, it is considered to be the growing

technology of the 21st century and has promising future to enhance the quality of life and environment.

The research and academic activities are strongly complimented by the Pravara Rural Hospital, Rural Medical

College and Rural Dental College, which are constituent units under PIMS-DU.

• Salient Features

❖ The “Research Driven” curriculum includes theory, practical, seminars, journal club and project work,

designed as per the latest advancement and technological developments in the field of Biotechnology.

❖ The programme imparts knowledge in applied biological sciences such as Biochemistry, Microbiology,

Immunology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Bioinformatics and Animal & Plant Tissue Culture.

❖ Undertaking minor research project & research papers presentation at the conferences is part of curriculum.

Students are encouraged to undertake research projects & pursue independently under the guidance of

trained faculty

❖ Field visit for exposure to healthcare settings to understand the health related issues and identify research

areas.

6. Infrastructure

• Physical infrastructure- PIMS-DU is located on a spacious and green unitary campus of 115 acres at Loni,

developed as per the master plan and land scaping, housing all the 6 constituent units and its rural hospital. It

has state of the art building blocks for academic and co-academic programmes, multispeciality tertiary

medical and dental hospitals as well as residential facility for students and staff on the campus, all within a

walkable distance. It is a near cent percent residential campus with all the basic amenities and facilities,

round the clock, ensuring a home away from the home. It is providing a good multispeciality hospital for

enriching clinical resource and care, safety, security, discipline and basic amenities 24x7(water, electricity,

maintenance) in a rural area, a real practice of “PURA”.

• Laboratory – The Institute has developed state-of-the-art facilities in different laboratories like

Biochemistry, Microbiology, Animal and Plant Tissue Culture, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. The

wet laboratories are equipped with spectrophotometer (UV-VIS), Thermal Cycler (PCR), Gel Doc System,

Electronic Balances, High Speed Cooling Centrifuge, Deep Fridge - 80 °C, HPLC, Gas chromatography,

Biosafety cabinets, CO2 incubator, ELISA reader, Cryotanks, Fermenter, Lyophilizer, Inverted Microscope

etc. Bioinformatics laboratory has access to Bioinformatics databases and software, public domain software

for molecular graphics. The classrooms are equipped with LCD projectors. Centre for Biotechnology has

established research in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics area in a short span of time. The faculty publishes

research papers in National and International peer reviewed journals and present their research along with

their students at National and International conferences and seminars. Nearly 40% students pursue higher

studies in reputed national and international universities giving strong alumni to the Institute.

• Library & IT- The Central and Institutional library is well equipped with foreign and Indian journals.

Central library has a rich collection of text books, reference books, including e-books and e-journals

(member of DelNet). Computer laboratory is equipped with personal computers with LAN connection and

high speed internet facilities through which students can access scientific literature, industry news and other

information which would help them to create general awareness in the discipline.

• Diagnostics - The Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences- Deemed to be University provides sophisticated

diagnostics facilities like Ultrasonography, Color Doppler. CT scan, MRI, Digital X-Ray with PACS etc. to

cater for poor patients. The Central Clinical Laboratory consists of Pathology, Biochemistry and

Microbiology and is well equipped with facilities like Microbalances, Histokinet, Vitros 5600 for

biochemical parameters and immunoassays, CBNAAT, True Lab Micro RT-PCR, BACT/ALERT 3D

Compact Vitek 2 Compact for blood culture, serological, virological and bacteriological testing,. The

Clinical Biochemistry laboratory is having state of art technology facility for analysis of various serum

biochemical, drugs hormones etc. using Dry Technology using Vitros analyzers. The Central Sterile Supply

Department (CSSD) has facility for sterilization and disinfection of instruments and materials. The Blood

Bank of the hospital is equipped with modern equipments to perform routine and special investigation

including HIV test etc.

7. Hostel Facilities

Students - both boys and girls of PIMS (Deemed to be University), who require hostel

accommodation, will be p0rovided with hostel facility which conforms to high standard quality of

construction, security, entertainment etc located in the Loni Campus. The spacious, well ventilated rooms

of Boy's, Girl's Hostels and International Centre are furnished with double/triple occupancy bed, reading

table, chairs, electrical fittings (tube lights, fans etc), common intercom telephone, internet connectivity

and common/individual attached bath rooms etc. The entire girl's hostels have round the clock security and

attendant facilities. A dedicated University official serves as a Warden-Friend-Guide-Philosopher is

available within the House during official hours for all the incumbents.

8. Admission Process & Eligibility Criteria

B. Sc. Medical Biotechnology:

Admission is based on the marks obtained in HSC (10+2) or equivalent examination from a recognized

Board.

M. Sc. Medical Biotechnology:

Admission is based on the marks obtained in B.Sc. or equivalent examination from a

recognized University.

Eligibility Criteria

B. Sc. Medical Biotechnology: Candidate fulfilling the following criteria shall be eligible:

A. Candidate should have passed HSC (10+2) or equivalent examination from a recognized Board

securing more than 40% marks (in aggregate) in the subjects namely Physics, Chemistry,

Biology /Mathematics and English. The Backward Class candidates must attach a copy of the

caste validity certificate along with the application form.

A candidate must be Indian National, the Nationality Certificate issued by the District

Magistrate/ Additional District Magistrate/ Chief Metropolitan or a valid passport shall

constitute the proof of Nationality.

B. The age of candidates must be over 17 years.

M. Sc. Medical Biotechnology: Candidate fulfilling the following criteria shall be eligible:

Indian university with minimum 50% marks (40% for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC)

9. Prospectus and Application Form

Those who are interested to seek admission into the aforementioned program should obtain the

Prospectus and Application form, which can be obtained through the following ways:

1) By sending a request letter to the Director, Centre for Biotechnology along with D.D. for Rs. 300/-(as

application processing fee) in favour of Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences- Deemed to be

University.

2) By downloading from the website www.pravara.com and submitting the downloaded application form

along with a D.D. for Rs. 300/-

3) From the Counter of Center for Biotechnology on cash payment of Rs. 300/- on working days from

9.00 am to 5.00 pm. (Monday to Friday) and 9.00am to 1.00 pm on Saturday.

4) The Application Form along with the Xerox copy of the following certificates should be submitted to

Director, Centre for Biotechnology.

10. Selection Procedure and Mode of payment

➢ Those satisfying the eligibility requirements will be included in the selection process.

➢ Selection for admission in the course will be done purely on merit basis i.e. marks obtained at the

qualifying examination.

Formalities after Selection Procedure

Submission of Application:

• Submission of application form, all necessary documents and application processing fee to The

Director, CBT, PIMS-DU, Loni.

Selection of Applicant:

• The candidates selected will be informed through e-mode / e-mail.

• If the candidate is willing to allowed the provision admission offer he / she shall the submitted the

acceptance Letter.

Acceptance Letter

• The candidate should submit the acceptance letter to the Director, Centre for Biotechnology.

Admission will be confirmed only after Verification of original certificates and payment of fees.

• The original certificate will be kept the office of Centre for Biotechnology till the candidate

successfully completes the programs.

• The candidate has to pay tuition fee for one academic year (Rs.36000/- for B. Sc; and Rs.56000/- for

M. Sc.) and other fees for Rs. 9000/- (ERP/IT Charge, Blazer, Deposit , Insurance)

11. Procedure for Cancellation of Admission

A candidate who has confirmed his/her admission may cancel it by submitting an application to the

Director, Centre for Biotechnology along with the following document: Application for cancellation

duly signed by the Candidate & Co-signed by parent/guardian, Original Admission Letter & Original

Fees Receipts

Such requests will be considered as per the following rules:

Period of Cancellation Permissible Refund

Within Thirty days from

date of admission

Entire amount of Annual Tuition Fees after deduction of

processing fee of Rs. 1000/-

Within Forty five days

from date of admission

Refund will be made after following deductions

Rs.1000/- processing fee

Deduction of monthly fee i.e. 10% of tuition fee

No cancellation of admission after 45 days

❖ All Security deposits and original certificates will be refunded in full in case of cancellation of

admission.

❖ The permissible refund will be made after three months from date of application for cancellation.

❖ No Correspondence in this regard will be entertained during this period.

Cancellation in middle of the course

❖ In the midway, if the student fails to continue the Course, for whatever reasons, student is liable

to pay the remaining course fee for the full duration of course. On payment of remaining course

fees.

❖ No Objection Certificate (NOC) and Original documents from the institute concerned shall be

issued. The request application for cancellation of the course is to be submitted through the

Director, Centre for Biotechnology to the Registrar, PIMS-Deemed to be University for approval.
