Structual profile of Hindu PhilosophyThe word Philosophy does not suit Hindutva. Philosophy is a combi-

nation of two words philo (love) and sophia (knowledge). In strictdefinition, philosophy means love of knowledge.

However, Hindu scriptures do not encourage acquisition of theoreticalknowledge which is often considered impractical and far removed from

reality. Hindu scriptures emphasise on personal experinece.

The word "Darshan" means to experience first hand. So the six branchof Hindu philosophy is called "Shat Darshan" -- Six ways of experienc-

ing life -- from logic to emotion to being.

The Shat Darshan is a choice from rank atheism to theism to panthe-ism. Hindu philosophy (for want of a better word in English) is moreabout experience and less about knowledge and concepts -- which

blocks direct perception of Truth.

There are also those who would like to wrangle on the definition of theword "Hindu". Indologists are of the view that the word Hindu isderived from the word "Sindhu" and has been a generic term forpeople living beyond River Sindhu since atleast the time whenAlexander arrived in India (as is evident from the writings of

Megasthenes).

That the Hindu scriptures value direct experience far from theoreticalacquisition is evident from the word -- Upanishad.

Upanishad means the knowledge that is transmitted by sitting near thepresence of an enlightened Master -- the emphasis on Guru-Shishya

tradition. It is the knowledge that is beyond words and is supposed tobe imbibed through presence.

The structural profile of Hindu philosophy is such that it encourages thestudent to dive deep into oneself.

The Upanishads describe the highest Truth in just a single word

Tatwamasi (You are that).

Study of the Vedas is nothing but a searchfor the Truth, nothing but understandingourselves, nothing but to know why we are bornin this world and where we will be going whenwe drop this physical body. The purpose of thestudy is to discover and understand the truthbehind the phenomenal universe and humanexistence. According to our ancient wisdom thisstudy is a joint venture between the student andthe teacher with full mutual trust and goodwill tofind out an answer to the fundamental questionof the purpose of our existence.

The word ‘Veda’ means to know implying thatthe subject of the Vedas is Knowledge. Hereknowledge does not mean facts about theexternal world like physics or chemistry. Itmeans the knowledge of the eternal, sacred, spiritual wisdom. It is about the nature of manhimself. It tells him who he really is. It is theknowledge of the changeless and SupremeReality behind the ever changing objectiveworld of men and matter.

The texts containing this knowledge have noauthorship, no time frame within which they hadbeen authored. They are called ‘Apaurusheya’meaning that they are not authored by anyPurusha or human mind. They were revealed tothe Rishis or Seers - the Drashtas, men ofwisdom, during the depths of their meditation. These sages were merely the instruments ofGod to spread His words.

Their utterances were called ‘Mantras’ whichwere not the result of any intuition but were theresult of Divine Vision which is called ‘MantraDrishti’. Their inner and outer meanings werereally known only to those to whom they wererevealed. Hence none can challenge them ongrounds of reason or logic. There is no finalauthority beyond the Vedas; in today’smanagement jargon the buck stops at the tableof the Vedas. The Upanishads form perhapsthe most important part of the Vedas on whichthe edifice of the ‘Shad Darshanas’ or the sixsystems of the Hindu Philosophy have beenbuilt up. The mystical teachings of theUpanishads are the essence of the Vedic HinduReligion and Philosophy. The Upanishads arethe crest jewels - choodamani – of the Vedas.

T.N.Sethumadhavan , [email protected]“The Vedic philosophy encompasses the

oldest spiritual texts of any religion in theworld, and its subjects are broad andnumerous. Its more advanced concepts canbe difficult for even the greatest scholars tofathom. The Vedic literature discusses manytypes of philosophical viewpoints, andstudying some of them will let us see thatmany of the concepts that we accept as newtoday are nothing more than parts of theancient Vedic knowledge that had been dealtwith and thoroughly understood thousandsof years ago. Thus, there are not many ideasthat are really new at all. The main purpose ofthe Vedic literature is to establish knowledgeof the Absolute Truth and the process forattaining the highest levels of self-realization”. – Stephen Knapp

Historicity and Preservation of the Vedas

The modern researchers are still struggling tofix up the exact period of the Vedas and there isno final conclusion as yet. Their conclusionsdiffer as widely as 25000 years B.C. to 1000years B.C. However, the general consensusamong most of the Indian scholars is to considerthe Mohenjadaro-Harappa culture i.e. about 3000B.C. to be the later phase of Vedic culture. Thisbrings us to conclude that the date of the Rig-Veda, considered as the earliest in humanhistory, is around 10,000 B.C.

The words ‘Drshti’ and ‘Sruti’ – seeing andhearing, used in describing the Vedas signifytheir very basic revelatory nature. For severalcenturies, the Vedas had to be committed tomemory and were passed on orally fromgeneration to generation. As they were preservedto posterity through hearing they are termed as‘Sruti’, what is heard. Without the use of writing afool-proof method was used to chant eachMantra in various patterns and combinationssuch as Pada Patha, Krama Patha, Jata Pathaand Ghana Patha to prevent any errors creepinginto the Vedas. The modes of chanting prescribethe basics like how much time one has to takefor reciting a word, how to regulate breathingwhile reciting so that required vibrations areproduced in the specific parts of the body whichwill yield pure word-sound.

Codification of the Vedas

It is believed that the potency of the Vedasstarted decaying with the departure ofBhagawan Sri Krishna from this world. Even thiswas considered to be a Divine Plan for the KaliYuga as per which only a part of the glory andeffulgence of the Vedas is to be left over fromtotal extinction. This Divine Arrangement couldbe put through the agency of Sage VedaVyasa. This sage was then not known underthis name. His name was Dwaipayana as hewas born in an island (Dweepa). He wasconsidered as a manifestation of Bhagawan SriKrishna himself for fulfilling a specific purposein this world and hence he was known asKrishna Dwaipayana. He was also known asBadarayana.

The word ’Vyasa’ means an essay orcomposition. It also means dealing with a mattersubject wise and classifying it suitably. AsKrishna Dwaipayana did all these tasks for theproper study and understanding of the Vedashe became famous as Sage Veda Vyasa. Hiscontribution to the codification of the Vedas isso great that he is more widely known as VedaVyasa than by any other name.

Sage Veda Vyasa collected allthe Mantras in existence duringhis period, edited, codified andorganized them into four groupswhich he taught to his four chiefdisciples. These are as under:

CLASSIFICATION OF THE VEDAS

Name Of The Veda Taught To

Rig Paila

Yajus Vaishampayana

Sama Jaimini

Atharvan Sumantu

The Vedas were mainly utilized in the performance of Yajnas(sacrifices) which were the most common form of early Vedicreligion. Such uses of the Veda led to its division based upon theconvenience of the chief priests conducting the sacrifices.

All the hymns used by the priest whose function was toinvoke the deities to the sacrifice (who is called Hotra) becamethe Rig Veda. The part of the Veda used by the chief executor ofthe sacrificial rites (called Adhvaryu) formed Yajur Veda.Collection of all the musical chants to be sung by the concernedpriest (called Udgatir, the singer) became Sama Veda. The restof the hymns dealing with a variety of topics was called AtharvaVeda which was assigned to a priest considered as thesupervisor over the whole process of sacrifice (called Brahma).

Auxiliary and Subsidiary Texts of the Vedas

Because of the difficulty in understanding the Vedas, thesages evolved a system of auxiliaries to the Vedas known asI.Vedangas, It means limbs or subsidiary parts of the Vedas,

Title Subject Dealt With

1.Siksha Science of phonetics

2.Vyakarana Science of the grammar of language

3.Nirukta Etymology or the science of origin

4.Chandas Prosody or science of composition

5.Jyotisha Astronomy and astrology

6.Kalpa Science or manual of sacrificial rituals

II. Veda-Upangas or six systems of Hindu philosophy1. Nyaya

6. Uttara Mimamsa or Vedanta.

UPA VEDAS

OR

SUBSIDIARY VEDAS

They are called thesubsidiary Vedas. They are fourin number one attached to eachVeda viz.

Ayurveda Science of health

Gandharva Veda Fine arts

Artha Veda Statecraft

Dhanurveda Warfare

Vedas are thus a storehouseof knowledge needed for

mankind, not merely spiritual butalso secular or temporal. Theyare not compositions made inany one particular period. They

are spread over a period of time;one group separated from the

other probably by centuries andhanded down from one

generation to the other throughword of mouth.

Divisions in each Veda

The contents of the Vedasare in the form of a collection ofmantras. The word Mantrameans ‘that which protectswhen repeated and reflectedupon’. The Rig Veda mantrasare called ‘Rik’ meaning hymnsor stanzas of verses metricallyset to convey definite meaning. The Sama Veda mantras arecalled ‘Saman’ meaning chantswhile Yajur Veda mantras arecalled ‘Yajus’ meaning sacrificialsentences.

These collections are calledSamhitas. They bring out thepurport of a Veda in the shape ofmantras, methodically arranged.Samhita means that which iscollected and arranged.

Page 8: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA KumbhaSankramana/Febuary / 8

Each Veda is also dividedinto Samhita and Brahmana. The Brahmana includes withinitself Aranyaka and Upanishad. Thus the division of the Vedasinto these four categoriessuitable to the four stages ofhuman life is as under:

DIVISIONS OF THE VEDAS

Samhita

Brahmana

Aranyaka

Upanishad

a. Samhita

It is the name given to thecollection of mantras or hymnsand prayers in praise of Deitiesfor attaining prosperity here andhappiness hereafter. Samhitaportion is considered as theprincipal text of a Veda. Thisportion is mainly meant for

Brahmacharis, those who are inthe first stage of their lives.

b. Brahmana

This portion of a Veda guidespeople in the performance ofVedic Karmas or sacrificialrituals; they are the proseexplanations of the method ofusing the mantras in the Yajnasand other rituals. Brahmana issuitable for the householders, those belonging to the secondstage in life.

c. Aranyaka

When one seeks the solitudeof the forests (Aranya) forfurther concentration, thephysical performance of Yajnaswill be impracticable for variousreasons more so due to oldage. The Aranyaka portion isaddressed to the people of thatcategory offering a substitute for

rituals. They teach methods ofmeditation based uponsymbolical interpretations ofsacrificial rites. It is a process ofperforming Yajnas andsacrifices at the mental level. For example BrihadaranyakaUpanishad starts with suchanalytical mental performanceof Aswamedha Yajna. TheAranyakas are intended for theVanaprasthas or people whoprepare themselves for the laststage in life i.e. Sanyasa.Aranyakas form the transitionlink between the ritual of theBrahmanas and the philosophyof the Upanishads.

d. Upanishads

The Upanishads are theconcluding portions of the Vedaswhich discuss philosophicalissues. They are the essence ofthe Vedas containing their

Page 9: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA Kumbha sankramana February / 9

knowledge aspects. Thephilosophy of the Upanishadsoccupies the highest pedestal inthe spiritual knowledge. Theyspeak about the identity of theSupreme Eternal Soul, theBrahman, the individual soul, theAtman, their mutual relationship, the Universe (jagat) and man’splace in it. In short they deal withJiva, Jagat and Jagadishwara.

As this is the core portion ofthe Vedas we shall be devotingmore time on this topic later. Dr.Radhakrishnan puts it like this.“While the hymns or Samhitasare the creation of the poets, theBrahmanas are the work of thepriests; the Upanishads are themeditations of the philosophers. The flow of thought from theSamhitas to Brahmanas toAranyakas to Upanishads is theindication of the process ofevolution of Hindu religion overthe centuries”

. Thus we have in the Vedasportions dealing with the actionor performance of rituals -.Karma Kanda, portions dealingwith the method of worship andmeditation - Upasana Kandaand lastly the portion dealingwith the Highest knowledge, theknowledge of Brahman - JnanaKanda. Roughly speaking, theSamhitas and Brahmanasconstitute Karma Kanda, theAranyakas the Upasana Kandaand the Upanishads the JnanaKanda.

Sookta, Sootra and Shakha

Before going further weshould be aware of what ismeant by Sooktas, Sootras andShakhas as we come acrossthese terms frequently in the

Vedic literature,

Sookta

The whole of the Rig VedaSamhita is in the form ofverses. They are also called Rikor hymns in praise of differentDevatas. In the later age theseverses or Riks come to becalled as Slokas or stanzas. Each Rik is a mantra and anumber of Riks or mantrasconstitute a Sookta - examplesare the popular PurushaSooktam, Narayana Sooktam,Sri Sooktam etc.

Sootra

Sootras are aphorisms ordeclarations using minimumnumber of words to project amaximum dimension of thought. It is a short formula using theleast possible number of lettersgiving no room for any ambiguityto express a sublimephilosophic thought. Thus itcontains the very essence ofthe thought and is absolutelyfaultless in its nature.

The best example is thefamous Brahma Sootra which isalso known as Vedanta Sootraor Sariraka Sootra whichcontains in a mystifying way thedoctrines spelt out in theUpanishads. Because of theircryptic nature, Bhashyas orcommentaries are necessary tounderstand Sootras. The namesof other important Sootras arePatanjali Yoga Sootra, NaradaBhakti Sootra, Shandilya BhaktiSootra, Ashtadhyayi of Paninietc. In fact the six Vedangasmentioned above and the sixsystems of Hindu philosophy -Shad Darshanas form the mostimportant twelve sets of Sootraliterature of Hinduism.

Shakha - its plan andpurpose

The Samhitas in course oftime branched off leading to theformation of Shakhas orrecensions. The branching off ofthe Vedic traditions took placeas a result of several factorssuch as geographical location ofthe priests, ritual specialization

Page 10: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA KumbhaSankramana/Febuary / 10

and doctrinal disputes.

Each of the principal sageshad several disciples. Thesedisciples or their successorsmight have done some editing ofthe Vedic mantras to suit therites they were required toperform and the geographicallocations where they wereplaced over which the localculture also must have had itsinfluence. Another reason givenfor the division of Vedas intomany Shakhas is the vastnessof the subject to be covered by astudent for achieving hisspiritual goal.

The scheme of Vediclearning is first studying andrecitation of the hymns(Samhita) followed byperformance of Yajnas(Brahmana), then an enquiryinto the rationale behind theperformance of these Yajnas(Aranyaka) and lastly, an enquiryinto ‘Paramatma Tattwa’ andattaining its actual experience(Upanishad). Since masteringthese tasks in their entirety is an

almost impossible job, amethod in the form of Shakhasof the Vedas was evolvedwhereby only the optimumrequired for each purpose wastaught. Each Shakha thuscontains that many mantrasunder each category ofSamhita, Brahmona, Aranyakaand Upanishad as would enablea seeker to accomplishliberation or Moksha,

Structure of the Vedas

We will now enter into theinner sanctum sanctorum of theVedas and look at the treasurescontained therein.

It is to be born in mind herethat conventionally speaking, itis the Samhita that is indicatedwhen we use the word Veda.Rig Veda means Rig VedaSamhita. So also is the casewith the other Vedas. TheBrahmanas, Aranyakas andUpanishads have independentnames.

Rig Veda Samhita

Of all the four Vedic

Samhitas, the Rg. VedaSamhita is the oldest andoccupies a pride of place in theVedic literature. The whole ofRig Veda Samhita is in the formof verse. It is a collection ofSooktas or hymns revealed tovarious Rishis at differentperiods of time. Hence a varietyof ideas, styles of language, grammar, historical and culturalfactors are found here. ThisSamhita contains masterpiecesof poetic compositions like thefamous Purusha Sooktam andthe morning prayers to Ushas, the goddess of dawn. It wassaid to have 21 Shakhas butnow only five of them are knownto exist.

According to the ancienttradition, the whole Rig Samhitahas been divided into 10Mandalas. The Mandalas aresubdivided into Anuvakas, theAnuvakas into Sooktas andSooktas into mantras asfollows.

Rig Veda contains 10552mantras spread over 1028

Page 11: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA Kumbha sankramana February / 11

Sooktas and 85 Anuvakas in 10Mandalas. The topics dealt within the Rig Veda Samhita can beclassified into 3 groups.

The first group is in praise ofthe deities like Agni, lndra,Varuna, Mitra and others. TheVedic deities numbering 33 areassigned to the three regions ofthe universe viz. earth (Prithvi),heaven (Dyaus) andintermediary space (Antariksha).Although these deities appearas personifications of forces ofnature, they are actuallydifferent facets of Brahman, theOnly One Supreme Reality. Thefamous mantra on this point‘ekam sat viprah bahudha

vadanti’ meaning ‘Truth is one, sage’s call it by various names’occurs in this Samhita.

The second group isconcerned with philosophicalspeculations like the origin ofthe Universe and the real natureof human beings. Although theSamhita is a book of laudatoryhymns still all the later ideas ofVedanta including Jnana andBhakti are found therein at leastin a rudimentary form. However, advocacy of worship of Godwith form and qualities -Sagunoposona - ispredominant.

The proclamation containedin various mantras show that it

teaches eka-devata-vada ormonotheism and notpolytheism. For example, theSamhita states that God createsthe world out of Himself andrules over it; He is omnipresent(present everywhere),omnipotent (all powerful) andomniscient (all knowing), He isever perfect, infinitelycompassionate, easilyapproachable by the devoteesand He grants us immortality. But the idea about actualprocess of creation of theuniverse finds a place only in thelater Vedantic literature i.e. theUpanishads.

The third group deals with

etc. The other three Shakhasare not so well known thoughthey also deal with similarsacrifices.

Related to this Samhita are-

1. Taittiriya Brahmana

2. Taittiriya and MaitrayaniAranyakas

3. Taittiriya, Katha,Swetaswatara, Maitrayani andMoha Narayana Upanishads.

Shukla Yajurveda Samhita issaid to have been brought to theknowledge of the World by thefamous sage Yajnavalkya fromVaajasani which means the SunGod. Hence this is also knownas Vajasneyi Samhita, This isentirely in verse form.

Out of 17 Shakhas of thisSamhita said to hove beenexisted; only two viz. Kanva andMadhyandina Shakhas arepresently existing. The former iscommon in South India while thelatter is popular in the North. This Samhita also deals mainlywith Yajnas like Agnishtoma.

Related to this Samhita are-

1. Satapatha Brahmana. Thisis a work extensively serving asa general guide to all the Vedas.

2. Brhad-Aranyaka and

3. Brhadaraanyokoponishadand Isavasyopanishad.

Samaveda Samhita

Samaveda Samhita is thehighly commended scripture ofHinduism. However it is notconsidered as an independentwork. All the mantras of the RigVeda which are useful to Udgatirpriest for chanting in the Yajnas

several secular subjects likemarriage, war etc., which showthe nature of society of thosetimes. A just and equitable socialorder existed. However, sociallife was conditioned by spiritualconsciousness. There wasSamanvaya or harmony of lifehere and hereafter. Satya (truth)and Dharma (righteousness)are glorified and Amritatva(immortality) as the goal of lifewas accepted.

The Brahmanas, Aranyakasand the Upanishads of this Vedaare

1. Aitareya and KausitakiBrahmanas

2. Aitareya and SankhyayanaAranyakas and

3. Aitareya and Kausitaki

Upanishads

Yajur Veda Samhita

It is a collection of Yajus orthe mantras in prose which giveprocedural details to theAdhvaryu priest for the properperformance of Yajnas. Thepopular hymn in praise of LordSiva - Sri Rudraprasna – finds aplace in this Veda. The otherfamous prayer PurushaSooktam also occurs here withsome modifications.

Yajur Veda Samhita is in twoparts viz. Krishna Yajurveda andShukia Yaiurveda. KrishnaYajurveda was taught by sageVaishampayana. It is consideredolder than the Shukla Yajurveda.Today a vast majority follow theYajur Veda. Krishna Yajurveda iscommon in the South andShukla Yajurveda in the North.

Krishna Yajurveda Samhita issaid to have contained 85Shakhas but only four of themare available now out of whichthe Taittiriya Samhita is widelyprevalent especially in SouthJndia. It deals with detaileddescriptions of sacrifices likeRajasuya, Vajapeya, Somayaga

to ensure the grace of the Godshave been brought together inthis Veda. ‘SA’ means a mantraof the Rig Veda, ‘AMA’ meansmusical notes. Hence a Saman isa mantra of the Rig Veda set tomusic. The word Saama alsomeans that which brings peaceto the mind. Although this Veda issaid to have 1000 Shakhas onlythree are available now.

Unlike the mantras of theother three Vedas, the mantrasof Samaveda are simply knownas Saman having seven svarasor musical scales. Therefore,Saama Gana or singing ofhymns as per the rules of SamaVeda is said to be the basis andsource of the seven svaras ornotes fundamental to the Indianmusic systems.

The special virtue of SamaVeda is that although its mantrasare from the Rig Veda they are

3. The well known ChandogyaUpanishad and theKenopanishad, which is alsoknown as Talavakaropanishad, are from this Veda.

Atharva Veda Samhita

Atharva means purohit orpundit. This Veda is said to havebeen brought to light by a Sagecalled Atharvan and hence thisname. This is also called BrahmaVeda because it is assigned tothe Brahma priest whosupervises the conduct of theYajnas. The mantras in this Vedaare both in prose and verseforms,

As the Atharva Veda Samhitahas some special features itstands apart from the other threeVedas. It deals more with thingshere and now than with thehereafter and the sacrifices areutilized as a means to them.

set to music which is greatlyconductive to the spiritualevolution of a human being andto qualify oneself for receivingthe grace of the Gods. Hence,Sri Krishna says in the Gita(Ch.10 Verse 22) ‘vedaanaamsaamavedosmi’ meaning ‘amongthe Vedas I am the Sama Veda’.Similarly, in the LalitaSahasranama, one of theepithets used to describe theDivine Mother is ‘Saama GaanaPriye’ meaning one who ispleased with the recital ofSaman.

Affiliated to this Samhita are-

1. Out of 9 Brahmanas of thisVeda Tandya Maha Brahmana isthe biggest and most important.

2. Only one Aranyaka of thisSamhita is available which iscalled Talavakara or JaiminiyaAranyaka.

Page 15: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA Kumbha sankramana February / 15

This Veda contains manytypes of mantras designed toward off evils and hardship asalso to destroy enemies. Besidesthis it deals with diseases andtheir cure, rites for prolonginglife, for fulfilling one’s desires, construction activities, trade andcommerce, statecraft, defensesystems of the country etc.

Many hymns deal withcreation and emergence of theUniverse. The hymn extolling thewonder of creation is calledPrithvi Sooktam. Amidst thesemundane subjects highphilosophical ideas are alsofound in this Veda. The literarystyle of this Veda is highlysophisticated.

Most of the Shakhas ofAtharva Veda are lost. Out of the9 Shakhas known to haveexisted under this Samhita onlytwo are available now. They arePippalada and Saunaka. Onlyone Brahmana called GopathaBrahmana has been discovered. No Aranyaka of this Veda hascome to light so far.

There are a number ofUpanishads which areassociated with this Veda. Thethree well known Upanishads viz.Prasna, Mundaka and Mandukyaas also the Kaivalya Upanishadbelong to this Veda.

Commentaries on the Vedas

As the Vedic literature isdifficult to understand, theirBhashyas or commentaries cometo our aid in bringing out theirinner meanings. Over thecenturies there has been agalaxy of commentators onVedas among whomSayanacharya of the 14thcentury holds a unique placeboth in terms of the outstanding

quality of his works and theirsheer volume.

Upanishads

After having had an aerialview of the Vedas and the placeof the Upanishads in them wemay now venture to go deeper tofathom the depths of theUpanishads.

. If there is one mass ofscriptures in the world that hassustained the spiritual thinkingover the millennia, it is theUpanishads. All the schools ofthought, religious movementsthat flourished in the later

ignorance of man and leads himto Brahman’. This definitionconveys three aspects of divineknowledge or wisdom which

1. loosens the bond ofSamsara of a being

2. destroys his inbornignorance (Ajnana) of his realnature and

3. leads him to Brahman orGod, the Absolute.

Etymologically the word‘Upanishad’ means that which istaught to the pupils sitting at thefeet of their teachers. Thus theUpanishads are books of wisdomtaught by the accomplishedteachers to the deservingstudents.

Actually the philosophy of theUpanishads was treated asRahasya or Guhya orconfidential not meant as apopular philosophy for anaverage person. The reason isthe common saying that half-knowledge is dangerousmeaning thereby that the highestwisdom could he misunderstoodby those who are not matureenough to absorb its deepersignificance.

The initial hesitation of Yama, the Lord of Death, to part withthe highest knowledge toNachiketa till he proved hisworthiness illustrates this pointHe offered the young Nachiketaall kinds of temptations to diverthis attention. But Nachiketastood the test successfullyconcentrating on his goal ofobtaining the secret knowledge.Ultimately, Lord Yama had torelent and began His expositionwhich is the subject matter of theKathopanishad.

Since the Upanishads form

periods in Indian history havebeen a byproduct of theUpanishadic thinking. Theygained respectability andacceptance only because theyfollowed the footprints of theUpanishads.

Meaning of the word‘Upanishad’

Several meanings of the wordUpanishad have been given bythe scholars. Sankara interpretsthis word to mean knowledge ofGod implying that the centraltheme of the Upanishads is thatknowledge which destroys

Page 16: Aseema Hinduism

the concluding portion of each ofthe Vedas they are often spokenof as Vedanta i.e. the end orAnta of the Vedas, TheUpanishads are the primary textsof Vedanta and in the commonparlance, the word Upanishaditself came to mean VedantaPhilosophy.

Number and Classification

The number of works that goby the name Upanishad andavailable today in print exceeds200. The Muktikopanishad givesa list of 108 Upanishads. However, the principalUpanishads are accepted to bethose which Adi Sankaracharyawho lived between 788 and 820A.D. chose to comment upon.

Sankara was the earliestcommentator on the Upanishads. He chose only 10 Upanishads forhis commentaries. According tosome scholars he commentedupon 11 Upanishads. He refersto 4 more Upanishads in hiscommentary on Brahma Sutra.

Considering the ones chosenby him for commenting and asreference material as the mostancient and authentic, they aretermed as major or principalUpanishads. We may list them asfollows

MAJOR UPANISHADS

1. Isavasya or Isopanishad

2. Kena Upanishad

3. KathaUpanishad

Dr. Radhakrishnan adds 4more Upanishads to the list ofPrincipal Upanishads viz.

The second group, mostly inverse form set to standardmetres, comprises 5 Upanishadsviz, the Katha, Isa,Shvetasvatara, Mundaka andMahanarayana.

. In the third group we returnto prose which consists of 3 textsviz. Prasna, Mandukya and Maitrior Maitrayani Upanishads.

Most of the Upanishadsoutside the above list belong to alater era of Indian culture, writtenmainly to propagate specific cultsor sects; Even then, they made aconsiderable contribution to thereligion and ethics of the timesand developed Vedantic spiritamong the people. They arecalled minor Upanishads andgrouped together in 6 categoriesViz.

The Vedanta Upanishadsfollow the lines of majorUpanishads in their principles.Siva, Sakta and VaishnavaUpanishads propagate the cultsof Siva, Sakti and Vishnurespectively. The YogaUpanishads deal with HathaYoga and Raja Yoga based onPatanjali’s Yoga Sutra and otherworks. Sanyasa Upanishads dealexclusively with Monasticism, itsideals, practices, rules andregulations.

Spread of Upanishads toother countries

Another important fact in thisconnection is about the spreadof Upanishads to the rest of theworld particularly to the West. A

• Maitri Upanishad

• Subaala Upanishad

• Kaivalya Upanishad

• Vajrasuchika Upanishad

Chronologically speaking, some scholars classify theUpanishads into three groupsbelonging to the three periods towhich they are attributed.

The first and the oldest groupConsists of 6 Upanishadsheaded by the Brhadaranyakafollowed by the Chandogya. Boththese Upanishads are written inprose and both areacknowledged as the mostauthoritative presentation of thecentral doctrines of theUpanishads. The other four inthis group are the Taittiriya,Aitareya, Kaushitaki and KenaUpanishads.

collection of 50 Upanishads wastranslated from Sanskrit toPersian in the year 1656 underthe name of Oupnek’hat at theinstance of Sultan MohammedDara Shukoh son of the MoghalKing, Shahjehan.

. This Persian work was latertranslated into Latin in 1801-1802. Thereafter, Germanscholars translated the Latinversion into German from whereit was taken to the shores ofEngland by others like Bohtlingkand Deussen. Max Muller, wholived between 1823 and 1900AD, selected 12 majorUpanishcids in his Sacred Booksof the East Series which werepublished in two volumes in 1879and 1884

Paul Deussen, anotherGerman scholar wrote twomasterpieces on the Upanishadsin German which were translatedinto English later. His works areentitled ‘The Philosophy of theUpanishads’ translated intoEnglish by Rev. AS. Geden and‘Sixty Upanishads of the Veda’ intwo volumes translated intoEnglish by Professors V.M.Bedekar and G.B. Palsule ofPune.

The well noted work by anEnglishman is ‘The ThirteenPrincipal Upanishads’ by RobertEarnest Hume.

Sankara was the earliest andthe first to comment upon theUpanishads. It goes to theeternal credit of Sankara thatthrough his masterlycommentaries he brought outthe Upanishads from obscurityand made them accessible andintelligible to a wider audience.

His followers wroteexplanatory works on Sankara’scommentaries which became thesource books of Hinduphilosophy.

Ramanuja who lived between1017 and 1137 AD, did notcomment on any of theUpanishads but had enrichedsome of their concepts in hisVedantasangraha. His followerRangaramanuja completed thetask by commenting on all themajor Upanishads.

Madhvacharya who livedbetween 1197 and 1276 ADwrote brief commentaries on allthe ten ancient Upanishads uponwhich his followers had alsowritten explanatory studies.

This is interesting and just a bit scary .TheMuslim religion is the fastest growing religionper capita in the United States , Especially inthe minority racesm says Rick Mathes

Last month I attended my annual training session that's re-quired for maintaining my state prison security clearance. Duringthe training session there was a presentation by three speakersrepresenting the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths, who explained each of their beliefs.

I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had tosay.. The Imam gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with a video. After the presentations, time was providedfor Questions and Answers. When it was my turn, I directed myquestion to the Imam and asked:

'Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that mostImams and Clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [holy war]against the infidels of the world and, that by killing an infidel, (whichis a command to all Muslims) they are assured of a place inheaven. If that's the case, can you give me the definition of aninfidel?' There was no disagreement with my statements and, without hesitation, he replied, 'non-believers! '

I responded, 'So, let me make sure I have this straight. Allfollowers Of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who isnot of your faith so they can have a place in heaven. Is that cor-rect?' The expression on his face changed from one of authorityand command to that of 'a little boy who had just been caught withhis hand in the cookie jar.' He sheepishly replied, 'Yes.'

I then stated, 'Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imaginePope Benedict commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faithor Dr. Stanley ordering all Protestants to do the same in order to

guarantee them a place inheaven!'

The Imam was speechless!

I continued, 'I also haveproblem with being your 'friend'when you and your brotherclerics are telling your followersto kill me! Let me ask You aquestion. Would you rather haveyour Allah, who tells you to killme in order for you to go toheaven, or my Jesus who tellsme to love you because I amgoing to heaven and He wantsyou to be there with me?'

You could have heard a pindrop as the Imam hung his headin shame. Needless to say, theorganizers and/or promoters ofthe Diversification' trainingseminar were not happy withRick's way of dealing with theIslamic Imam and exposing thetruth about the Muslims' beliefs.

In twenty years there will beenough Muslim voters in theU.S. to elect the President! Ithink everyone in the U.S. shouldbe required to read this, but withthe liberal justice system, liberalmedia and the ACLU, there isno way this will be widely publi-cized.

Leftwing journalists arewriting sob stories about howbadly Australians are allegedlytreating Muslims. Yet LebaneseMuslim goons have been terroriz-ing locals for years without apeep from these leftwing bigotswho call themselves journalists.

‘Report’ after ‘report’ on theCronulla riots stressed Australianracists as being the problem. When it came to fingering Leba-nese Muslim thugs the samejournalists omitted the thuggeryand described this scum as“being of Middle Eastern appear-ance. This lie was a shabbyattempt to reinforce their despi-cable view that Australians arebasically racist.

These are just a few articlesand phoney reports that blamewhite Australians for the rioting.

Revenge attacks in Sydney racewar, The Australian, David King andDan Box, 12 December.

Let us take a quick look at whatthis despicable bunch of ideologicallymotivated hacks deliberately ignored.Three lifesavers objected to LebaneseMuslims bullying a group of womenbecause of their bathing costumesThese Muslim thugs attacked thegreatly outnumbered lifesavers andbadly beat them, rendering one of themunconscious.

It was this vicious incident ofLebanese Muslim thuggery thatsparked the riots that these menda-cious journalists are blaming realAustralians for. For more than ten yearsthese misogynistic thugs have beengetting bolder in their demands andtheir violence in the face of the ALPGovernment’s contemptible cowardiceand its refusal to order the police toenforce the rule of law against theseself-appointed religious police.

If the riots were racially inspired, asour journalists claim, how come onlyLebanese Muslim thugs were targeted? Why were there no Indians, Chinese,Vietnamese, Cambodians, Ceylonese,Sikhs, Buddhists, Jews, etc., involved? Also ignored by our media guardians isthe interesting fact that the Lebanesehave been immigrating to Australia formore than 100 years without any kindof reaction from native Australians.Additionally, how do they explain Leba-nese Catholic churches being targetedby Muslims?

So what happened? Nearly all ofthe former immigrants were Maronites

while the Lebanese scum that started the riots are Muslimswho came here in the 1970s. So what is that telling us? NewSouth Wales Police Commissioner Ken Moroney inadvert-ently let the cat out of the bag when he admitted on Channel7 that he

…sensed within some elements of this (Middle Eastern)community a hate. It’s a hate that I don’t understand, I don’tunderstand it as a man.

“Middle Eastern” is the multiculturalist’s code phrase forMuslim. So what we have here is Muslim hatred of Australia.Nevertheless, despite massive evidence to the contrary ourleftwing media still insists on lying to the public. It’s true thatsome racists attached themselves to the mob. But to usetheir opportunism to smear fellow Australians as “neo-Nazis”is, unfortunately, par for the course for our agitprop journos.

The truth, something these leftwing hacks cannottolerate, is that the Labor Government encouraged thesituation to fester until uncontrolled vigilantism broke out.Intolerable as mob rule is, let us not lose sight of who isreally responsible for it. As Tim Priest, a former Sydneypolice detective, put it:

It’s been a long time coming … and it can’t stop now….Of course, the usual claque of agenda-driven ethnic commu-nity leaders were quick to condemn the Cronulla incidents asun-Australian and racist. Never mind the multitude of racistattacks on young Australian men and women during the pastdecade, which have now manifested into full-blown racialretaliation. (Blame race riots on police force neglect, TheAustralian, 13 December).

Nearly two years ago Mr Priest also argued in TheAustralian

…that the increasing frequency of racially motivatedattacks on young Australian men and women –– includingmurders, gang rapes and serious assaults by young men ofLebanese Muslim descent –– would rise dramaticallythroughout Australia. These problems remain widespreadand have been documented in the ensuing two years. Yetthe NSW Labor Government and police have failed to ad-dress the issues in any way…

So while Lebanese Muslim thuggery intensified and theincidence of their violent crimes rose, the ALP Governmentsettled for abject surrender. The Party of the little people, ofthe working class, of the fair go and the toilers sacrificed thewelfare of these people to the God of multiculturalism andpolitical expediency. No wonder Howard keeps winningelections*.

So how is Premier Morris Iemma dealing with the situa-tion? He is telling law abiding Australians to stay away from

Page 21: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA Kumbha sankramana February / 21

their own beaches. But what canwe expect from a pusillanimouscreep who smeared his fellowAustralians by falsely statingthat the riots were “the ugly faceof racism … and also theattitudes and the physicalassaults that took place theweekend before”.

Why did he refuse to usethe ‘M’ word? Because thissnivelling coward’s Lakembaelectorate is dominated by ––you guessed it –– LebaneseMuslim thugs. It is therefore noaccident that though theLakemba mosque is notoriousfor its hate speech and thepresence of the pro-terroristIslamic Youth Movement thestate has never interfered withits anti-Australian activities, even though its actions amountto sedition.

It is time to recognise theextremist religious canker in ourmidst and cut it out –– even if itmeans revoking these thugs’citizenship and deporting themto Lebanon where, I have nodoubt, they would be welcomedwith open arms by Islamo-fascistterrorist groups.

Note: Miranda Devine,Janet Albrechtsen, Andrew Boltand Paul Sheehan are amongthe few in the media who havehad the courage to write thetruth about the hatred, thuggeryand racism coming from Leba-nese Muslims. *It also looks likethe French public is swinging tothe right in a reaction to Muslimriots. This ought to be a warningto the ALP.

I proudly assert my inalienable, indivisible, immutable, andinexorable constitutional right to be a practicing Hindu. Yet, seeingthe conduct of E Ahmed, Union Minister of State for Railways, at arecent public function organised by the Indo-Japan Chamber ofCommerce and Industry in Chennai, I am constrained to raisethese questions.

Are we living in Islamic Pakistan? Are we living in Islamic

Bangladesh? Or are we living in Taliban-controlled Afghani-stan? Let me move from this macrocosm to the microcosm. Arewe living in the Muslim-majority Malappuram District in Kerala, rightly described by some journalists as a mini-Pakistan in India?

I am raising these issues because the Union Minister of Statefor Railways, Ahmedwho recently participated at a public seminaron ‘Status of Infrastructure’, organized by the Indo- Japan Cham-ber of Commerce and Industry in Chennai refused to light theKuthuvilakku as a traditional and well-established part of theinaugural ceremony. The Union Minister caught the other dignitar-ies and the organisers of the function off guard when he declinedto accept the candle offered to him to light thekuthuvilakku on thepodium. It is reliably understood that one of the organisers told thepress that the Minister refused to

CULTURAL TALIBANIN SECULAR INDIA

light the lamp because it isan un-Islamic action. It is under-stood that the Minister told someof the helpless and totallyclueless organizers; ‘TheMuslim community does notlight lamps. It is against Shariah, the code which governs Islam’.

I understand that some timeback, P K Kunha-likutty, aMuslim League leader who wasKerala’s Industries Minister, courted controversy when herefused to light the lamp whileinaugurating a state function atThiruvanan-thapuram. Thefamous playback singer K JYesudas who was also one ofthe guests at the same function, walked out protesting against it.

The Cheraman Mosque,Kodungallur in Kerala has anancient oil lamp which alwaysburns and whichis believed to bemore than a thousand yearsold.Every day people of allreligions bring oil for the lamp asoffering. This is one of the fewmosques in Kerala which allowentry for people of other reli-gions. In recent years, themosque has observedhidyarambham, a Hindu initiationritual marking the beginning of achild’s learning. I am mentioningthis so that Union Minister EAhmedcan use his authority forgetting a fatwa issued againstthe managers of this ancientMosque for violating the tenetsof Islam!!

The anti-Hindu ways ofAhmed were very well known inKerala even before he becamethe Union Minister of State forRailways. After becoming theUnion Minister of State forRailways, he is functioning like a

Mughal chieftain. Many organisations like the Vishwa HinduParishad have already publicly condemned this Hindu-hatingMinister for having issued instructions to Railways officers not todoGanesha Puja, breaking of coconut, etc before starting of newtrains, inauguration of tracks, bridges, etc. He has banned lightingof traditional oil lamps during inaugurations. Likewise, garlandingof trains, anointing them with sandal paste, sindoor, etc. have alsobeen banned. Railway stations have been discouraged againstdoing puja to electronic panels etc. during ‘Vijayadasami’ and‘Durga puja’.

Finally, he has ordered the closure of temples in Railwaycompounds and is planning their demolition. This anti-Hindu moveof Ahmed has caused deep religious resentment and intenseanger among the 25 lakh strong railway staff and Hindus at large. Iam presenting below the shining symbols of Hinduism andSanatana Dharma which have been deliberately denigrated byAhmed!!

Garlanding of RailwayTrains disapproved!

While crores are being spent on ‘Haj’ even basic amenitiesare not being provided to the eight crore plus Sabarimala pilgrims,by the Indian Railways. These Hindu pilgrim are treated as state-less persons by the Ministry of Railways! VHP leader KummanamRajasekharan has described this anti-Hindu attitude of this despi-cable anti-Hindu Union Minister as a threat and challenge toHinduism. He has rightly charged E Ahmed of communalising anational asset like Railways. He called for immediate restoration ofthe withdrawn ancient Indian customs and traditions, failing whichRSS and VHP will launch nationwide massive agitations. I spoketo a very important VHP leader from Kerala to know more aboutthe blatently anti-Hindu ways of E Ahmed. He said: ‘What morecan be expected from Ahmed whose close relative is a jehadisuspect in the Bengaluru blasts and who is hiding in Gulf, thanksto Ahmed and the UPA Government!’

Seeing the conduct and opposition of this Union Minister tothe lighting of Kuthuvilakkuat a public function in Chennai, I amreminded of this savage manner in which the Talibans of Afghani-stan destroyed the two 6th century statues of standing Buddhascarved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan valley in the Hazarajatregion of Central Afghanistan.

At a public meeting held on Nov. 29,2009, Actor Shah Rukh Khan is reportedto have said that: “Terrorism has no reli-gion”. This is grossly misleading andnonsensical twaddle by a crafty actor tolull Hindus into believing that Islam hasnothing to do with terrorism. It has not awhit to do with reality. It is completelyout of sync with the general view held bymillions of Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhistswho have suffered unprecedented brutali-ties and savagery at the hands of RadicalIslamists for the last 1400 years.

SHAHRUKHKHAN IS ALIARNarainKataria,Indo-USIntellec-tualForum

Instead of giving wide publicityto this untruthful claptrap all overIndia his opinion should have bedismissed with the contempt itdeserves and challenged by leaderssitting in the meeting, includingHome Minister P. Chidambaram.Since people sitting in the meetinghad absolutely no clue as to what theIslamic trilogy, Quran (sacred bookof Muslims), Hadith (traditions basedon conduct of Mohammad) and Sira(life of Prophet Mohammed) , enjoinon Muslims, they just listened to andaccepted the crap dished out tothem. None of them, either becauseof ignorance or fear of violentreaction from Islamists, even raisedthe question that descendants ofinvaders, particularly Wahhabists andSalafists, are spreading the jihadistmovement in India to complete theviolent conquest of India for Islam.

The time has come for Hindus todevelop a little bit courage and call aspade a spade. It is an irony of fateand a matter of great disgust thatnone of the Hindu leaders in Indiacame forward to challenge thisstatement laden with outright lies andbald assertions. Hindu leaders inIndia have lost the nerve completely.Because of their squeamishness, sheepishness and lack of virility,Hindu society is undergoing tortureand suffering. At the moment Hindusociety is directionless, rudderlessand feels cantankerous becauseHindu leaders rarely deracinate theperniciousness of Jihadi culture inpublic.

Hindus have been terrorized intosubmission by Islamists to such anextent that they never stand up andcome out openly to speak the truth. The truth is that more than 90%terrorism-related activities all overthe world are carried on by RadicalIslamists. Almost all the prisoners injails in UK and USA on the charge ofterrorism are Muslims. “Islamicterrorists have carried on 14,510terrorists attack since 9/11” (a rateof about three to four a day).(www.The Religion of Peace.org)These attacks were not carried on bynormal Muslims for money orpersonal jealousy but as a religiousduty performed in the name of Allah.

Shah Rukh Khan used sophistryand subterfuge to misguide Indians(Hindus) by covering up the heinouscrimes of his co-religionists, andportraying them in a very favorablelight. In his sinister attempt he wasaided and abetted by anti-Hinduelectronic and print media who

broadcast his message as gospeltruth all over India. Ostensibly,Shah Rukh was following theIslamic law of al Taqiyah whichenjoins on Muslims to lie and cheatin the furtherance of Islam. ShahRukh fully exploited the non-comprehension of media andignorance of the non-Muslimaudience about the tenets of Islam.

It is a paradox that Muslims, converts or their descendants, whoenjoy good life in India, invariablysupport their Arabian masters.

The following verifiable factsoutright reject the statement of ShahRukh Khan:

1. The World Trade Center attackin New York on 9/11 in which 3000innocent people were burnt to deathwas carried out by agents of AlQaeda (a militant Islamic terroristgroup led by Osama bin Laden).

2. The Bali bombing on October12, 2002 also was unleashed byradical Islamists.

3. The Madrid train bombings inSpain on March 11, 2004 in which191 people were killed was byMuslims.

4. The suicide attack on IndianParliament in December 2001 waslaunched by two Pakistani (Muslim)terrorist groups who were guided bythe tenets of Islam.

5. The three Mumbai bomb blasts(i) in 1993 in which more than 250people were killed, (ii) July 2006 inwhich 209 killed, and (iii) 26/11/2008 in which 170 people killedwere all carried on by devoutMuslims.

6. The June 7, 2005 London trainbombing in which 52 people werekilled was also the handiwork ofIslamic terrorists.

7. Islamic terrorists in 1998

bombed US embassy in Kenya andkilled hundreds of innocent people.

8. Islamic terrorists attacked inAlgeria, Moroco in April 2007 andkilled a lot of people.

9. A group of 45 Muslim doctorsthreatened to use car bombs androcket grenades in terrorist attacks inthe United States during discussionson an extremist internet chat site. One message read: “We are 45doctors and we are determined toundertake jihad and take the battleinside America.

10. Another terrorist suspectNajibullah Nazi, 24, from Denverwas allegedly planning attacks on theNew York subway in September,2009 was also a Muslim.

11. Major Nidal Hasanproclaimed himself a

“Soldier of Allah”. Hemassacred 13 Ameri-can soldiers at Fort

One can go on and on and canwrite a book about Islamic terror-ism around the world.

Now for the information ofreaders I would like to quote belowsome statements made by topterrorists and by noted experts onIslamic studies:

“I am one of the servants ofAllah. We do our duty of fightingfor the sake of the religion ofAllah. It is also our duty to senda call to all the people of theworld to enjoy this great lightand to embrace Islam andexperience the happiness inIslam. Our primary mission isnothing but the furthering ofthis religion.” Osama binLaden.

Maulana Syed Abul A’alaMaudoodi, founder of the

Jamaat-e-Islami proclaimed:“The goal of Islam is to rule the

entire world and submit all of themankind to the faith of Islam. Any

nation or power that gets in theway of that goal, Islam will fight

and destroy it.”Shaikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, who planned the

first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993,funneled these words to his fellow faithful: “Oh,you Muslims … destroy their embassies, attacktheir interests, sink their ships, and shoot down theirairplanes. Kill them on land, at sea, and in the air, kill them wherever you find them.” (Babbin, in theWords of Our Enemies, p. 60)

“Our whole struggle is for the enforcement ofSharia law” Muslim Khan, Spokesperson for thePakistani Taliban, responsible for hundreds ofbombings, shootings and abductions.

All the above statements made by religiousscholars make it crystal clear that the aim of Islamis to dominate the entire world by force andsubjugate entire humanity. In spite of massiveevidence presented above, Shah Rukh Khan andthe so called secular print and electronic media hasthe temerity to present falsity as truth. RadicalIslamists know it very well that it is a game bluffingthe hateful Kafirs. Hence this secular shibbolethhas to be exposed and vehemently condemnedotherwise it will destroy India from within.

A study conducted by Pew Foundation con-cludes that: Majorities or pluralities in the U.S.,Canada, and every European country, other thanFrance, judge that some religions are more prone toviolence than others. And when those taking thisview are asked which religion they think of asmore violent, Islam is designated by large majoritiesin each of these countries – in Netherlands 88%, inFrance 87%, in Spain 81%, in Germany 79%, inPoland 77% in India 73% consider Islam is themost violent religion.

From all the above it is crystal clear even tothe purblind that almost all terrorists have a

religion. They are devout followers of Islam.Shah Rukh Khan is plainly lying and trying to

fool the secular intelligentsia and cluelessHindus – the majority population of India.

I don’t know precisely when the dumbing down of America began, but my guess would be sometime during the 1960’s, the decadehistorians may someday identify as the beginning of the end of theUSA. I believe this dumbing down has now caught up with us to theextent we are, collectively, one of the most stupid countries on theface of the earth.

We are so stupid that, just a few years after we came underattack from Muslim fanatics, we elected as president aninexperienced man contemptuous of America and sympathetic toIslam, instead of a war hero alternative.

We are so stupid we are politically correcting ourselves right intothe grave. Terrorists must be doubled over with laughter (ifextremist Islam permits laughter) as we hassle and search obviousinnocents at airports instead of profiling those most likely to do usharm. It may turn out, looking back, that America was actually lostthe instant the airplanes hit the Twin Towers on 9/11 and we arenow going through a steady decline leading to the inevitable end.I’m sure terrorists can hardly believe their luck as they watch usdoing ourselves in.

Beyond that, while the terrorists are clever enough to kill sevenCIA agents recently through trickery — the use of a double or tripleagent — we are too stupid to outfox the terrorists the way the U.S.and our allies did to the enemy on occasion in World War Two.“American intelligence” is an oxymoron. We are so stupid that, whilecountries like China and India are graduating more scientists andengineers, we are graduating students barely capable of stringingtwo coherent sentences together. These are the same studentswho have little or no knowledge of American history, no clue whoGeorge Washington and Abraham Lincoln are and why they areimportant, no idea of how we saved the world between 1941 and1945. And if that isn’t bad enough, students in public school, high

US stupidity ismonumental. It hasmade us ripe for thepicking

school and university classroomsare being taught every day tohate America.

We are so stupid we aredeliberating destroying the bestsystem of health care in theworld. It’s as stupid as“destroying the village in order tosave it” during the Viet Nam war.But this time it’s us this stupidityis going to kill.

We are so stupid we havelending institutions allowingpeople to buy houses with nomoney down, and people fallingfor such schemes, ignorant ofthe severe economicconsequences to individuals andthe country as a whole.

We are so stupid we sit infront of TV sets and watchmindless “reality” shows that notonly have no redeeming valuewhatsoever but further debaseour culture. America is a countrywhere the results of “AmericanIdol” are actually reported as alegitimate news story, not only onthe network that carries the showbut on the news broadcasts ofcompeting networks as well. We’re stupid enough to believethat celebrities matter in ourlives.

Our much smarter enemies know it but we will probablynot wake up until it’s too late. We’re just too stupid tofigure it out, says Doug Gamblehttp://politicalmavens.com/index.php/2010/01/12/united-states-of-stupidity/

CAN MUSLIM FUNDAMENTALISTS BE MORAL?

Bogus intellectuals, Marxist Academicians and mindlessmedia pundits resist incorporating a truly accurate

understanding of the root cause of Jihadi terrorism. Theymerely transform their distortions and false myths into a

new set of myths and willingly accept distortedperceptions in place of reality— Dr. Babu Suseelan

All of us know daily occurrences of Jihadi terrorism, Islamichomicide bombing, beheading of innocent kafirs, and organized,

repetitive, regular and predictable slaughter of Muslims by Shias andSunnis in the name of Allah. In recent months we have seen Islamicbloodshed, mass murder, beheading, and homicide bombing in all

countries with substantial number of Muslims. We have seenMuslims on a murder march shouting Allah Akbar in Afghanistan,

Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Georgia, India, Philippians, Sudan andChechnya. These are not a phenomena defined by the news media. Our judgments of reality based on daily occurrences tell us more

about Islamic terrorism. Indeed, we take these destructive events forgranted.

Beneath all the pictures andthe prose on Jihadi terrorism, and Islamic violence, we are stillstruggling to understand what isgoing on in the name of Islam. With all the freedom to discussthe subject of Jihadi terrorism, intellectuals on the far left andon the far right (anti-Zionists)are holding on to vague ideasabout why Muslims resort toterrorism. They are ready toparade and promote bogustheories of economicdeprivation, lack of education, and political interferences.Bogus intellectuals, MarxistAcademicians and mindlessmedia pundits resistincorporating a truly accurateunderstanding of the root causeof Jihadi terrorism. They merelytransform their distortions andfalse myths into a new set ofmyths and willingly acceptdistorted perceptions in place ofreality. They are rewarded byIslamo fascists in ways which

they never quite understand. It iswith Islamic false propaganda inwhich they place theirconfidence about the root causeof Islamic terrorism. Their faultyperception and irrationalanalysis are not sufficient toanswer the public questions, doubts and fears on immoralacts and destructive acts ofMuslim fundamentalists.

The general public mustfirst be redirected from theireagerness to believe in suchbogus theories, phonyperceptions, and irrationalanalysis or they will stumblefrom one set of vulnerability toanother set of immoral acts ofIslamic fundamentalists.

ISLAMIC MORALITY

Islam has a unique worldview. Islamic closed paradigmconstitutes cultural patterns,

beliefs, moral values, and socialnorms shared by the people of

Arabia during the sixth century. For centuries, rigid, authoritarian

and dualistic Islamic worldviews have been shaping

Islamic behavior. The Islamicclosed channel thinking isreflected in varied Islamic

expressions as morality, socialrelationships, interpersonal

communication as well as theirethical acts.

Muslims have a sense oftogetherness and a commonidentity. They have a convictionthat they form a special group,as well as a sense of moralobligations and a set of beliefsin the Koran that holds thatIslam is the only truth and non-believers are kaffirs. Practicallyall Islamists share the view thatAllah is the best superior being, the one those non-Muslimsshould follow. Faith in Allahusually accompanied by thebelief in subjugation of non-Muslims is natural, morally right

Page 32: Aseema Hinduism

and it is in the best interest ofIslam to convert all infidels.

The Koran and the Hadithare two great driving forces inIslam both individually andsocially. Islam provides areferent for the explanation ofmany events including ethicaldecision making, rituals, andsocially unacceptable actsincluding oppression of women, hostility against kafirs, honorkilling, and Jihadi terrorism. Itconstitutes a system parallel toand in many ways opposed toethical philosophy, and rational-humanistic systems.

For a Muslim, his lifecenters upon Allah and all hisactions bear identifiablerelations to Allah. As such, Islamforbids critical thinking, moralreasoning, and freedom of thewill for Muslims. Equal status forwomen, self-examination andthe expansion of ethicalreasoning are not allowed. Islamdo not allow introspection, creative imagination, aestheticcreation, humor and artistic

expression or search for theexpressions of the infinite.Muslims are not allowed thepossibility of intellectual andemotional satisfaction throughethical and spiritual life outsideof Islam. Islamic institutionsassume important role to keep afirm hand over its non-rationalityand direct its forces to restrictindividual moral initiatives.

Islamic fundamentalistsconsider Islam is a completeideology related to all aspects ofhuman nature concentrated onteleology, ethics, psychologyand human behavior of allhumans for all the time.

Islamic moral principles area one-sided mechanistic, reductionist, non-compromising,and closed. The closed, rigid,pre-determined and non-compromising Islamic paradigmand moral directives tend toplace Muslims in oppositionalposition in relation to non-Muslims. The reductionistIslamic morality carries theassumption that moral

principles of non-Muslims areinferior and should be rejected.

For Muslims, moraldirectives of the Koran andHadith are the expression ofethics in operation. Muslimsdecide plan of action on thebasis of Islamic values. Muslimsbelieve that only knowledge ofthe Koran and Hadith can helpindividual Muslims solveconflicts between social andmoral norms that create ethicaldilemmas.

Islamic law reflects the willof Allah rather than the will of themoral majority or the will of ahuman law maker. Allah’s willreflect in Islamic law and itcovers all areas of life includingmoral behavior. In an Islamiccontext, there is no such thingas a separate secular or moralauthority and moral principles.Muslims believe and followshariah. Islamic shariah meanssubmission. Shariah seeks toestablish that Allah is the divinelaw giver and no other law ormoral principle may exist butAllah’s law and moral directives.

Islamic shariah includesboth ethics and law. The Islamiclaw does not allow behaviornorms based on individualconscience. The doctrine ofshariah and jihad arefundamental because these arebased on clear and authenticverses in the Koran and Sunnaand it is considered pivotal forMuslims until all infidels areconverted and Dar-Ul-Islam isestablished.

Muslims decide their plan ofaction on the basis of Islamicvalues and morality. Islamimpels all Muslims emotionally

Page 33: Aseema Hinduism

to perform human acts directed towards Allah.Historically, there has been a very closeconnection between Islam and morality.Muslims consider duties which are primarilydirected towards Allah and actions towardsfellow believers and non-believers arecommanded by Allah. Immoral acts arepracticed as moral duty such as slaughteringanimals during Hajj, honor killing, Jihad war, beheading, limb amputation, stoning kafirs todeath, Islamic feasting during Ramadan, oppression of women, child marriage andpolygamy. These Islamic moral duties andrituals often lead to abnormal perversions andsocially disastrous consequences.

Islamic religious practices frequentlyconflict with moral codes of many societies.Islam prohibits a Muslim living in a non-Islamicsociety to take moral action that may conflictwith Islamic guidelines. Islam indoctrinatesMuslims against the theoretical study of ethics, right civil conduct and moral action.

Muslim fundamentalists feel that there isnothing immoral about following the dictates ofAllah or any immorality in forcefully convertinginfidels or issuing a fatwa against a kafir writinga book critical of Islam. Islamo fascists have nomoral qualm in beheading an innocent non-Muslim journalist or hijacking a passenger planein the name of Allah. Islamic fundamentalistscommitting immoral and heinous crimesagainst humanity should always weigh whetheran action is morally right or wrong before theaction is taken. Their commitment and love forIslamic guidelines cannot make a wrong actionmorally right. Even if Muslims are compelled tofollow Islamic ethics that guide their actions, thedifficulty remains regarding the need tocompromise between their conflicting Islamicvalues to those of non-Muslims. Islamicfundamentalists should realize that knowledgeof the Koran and the Hadith is insufficient initself for knowing how to behave ethically. In thiscontext, one is reminded of Kant who said that“morality….in no way needs religion for itssupport.” For Muslims, knowledge of ethics isneeded for better moral action, not blind faith inAllah.

CAN A MUSLIM FUNDAMENTALIST BEMORAL?

In view of the differences between Islam andmorality, the question may be asked; can aMuslim fundamentalist be moral? A Muslim can bemoral without Islam. A Muslim can do moral actswithout emulating life style of Mohammed or hisnon-compromising preaching. They should followthe voices of conscience and strive for morality, ethical action, and harmony.

Morality implies adherence to social norms, laws, and civilized practices rather than blindobedience to invisible Allah. Muslims who areobligated to Allah should not obscure theirobligations to morality and commitment to greatintrinsic value of humans. Islam rejects ethicalprinciples and moral practices of non Muslims.Muslims seek answers by looking to andrediscovering irrational, outdated and illogicalideas and expressions from the past. Islamrejects differing world views, ethical philosophyand refuses to recognizes changes in moralperspectives which emphasize theinterrelatedness of individuals and community andtheir mutual responsibility for one another.

The binary thinking and closed Islamicmorality carries the assumption that non-Muslimsare unethical, immoral and inferior and should beoppressed and forced to assume an Islamicidentity. Non-Muslims are subjected to inhumanbehavior as parts of a systematic destruction ofkafirs. Islamic religious leaders promoting violenceand terrorism against infidels express little shame, guilt, remorse, empathy or ethical concern. Jihadicriminals minimize or deny injuring victims byterrorism. They maintain feelings of uniqueness,

Page 34: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA KumbhaSankramana/Febuary / 34

tough mindedness by refusingto consider the feelings of non-Muslims. Muslims considerimmoral acts and violenceagainst infidels as not unethicalbut an opportunity to providetrue Islamic awareness and aphase of Islamic identitydevelopment.

Do Muslims enjoy freedom?Freedom presupposes choice. Ifthere is no choice, there is nofreedom. Freedom is also notabsolute. Ethics and moral actioncan exist only if freedom ofchoice exists. A Muslim or a non-Muslim can be moral if only he/she is free. Moral action ispossible only if the freedom ofthe will and freedom of choiceexist. In Islam, will of Allah is final

and dominant. Islam hasforbidden freedom of choice, critical thinking, rationalevaluation, and moral decisionmaking if it conflicts withpredetermined directives of theKoran.

Philosophically, Muslims areunfree since they are imprisonedin the closed, non-compromising,authoritarian and reductionistIslamic dogma. Freedom alsoinvolves the capacity andopportunity to make moraldecisions. Muslims are unfreebecause they are prevented orprohibited from doingconscientious moral actions if itconflicts with Allah’s will. Islamimposes inner limitations andIslamic religious leaders restrain

them with external limitations. Allthese Islamic inner and outerrestrictions prevent Muslims fromdoing conscientious actsconsistent with social moralityand ethical norms.

Islam teaches preconceivedmorality and fixed ideas abouthuman relations and ethicalbehavior. Discrimination, prejudice, physical violence, andunethical behavior towardsinfidels are built often wittingly, into the very structure and formof Islamic society. Muslims tendto ignore unchanging Islamicvalues making them unfree andin moral blindness. They wish toremain ignorant of certainconcepts and directives in theKoran that make them unable to

Page 35: Aseema Hinduism

make a moral choice withoutIslamic restraints.

Moral choice is possible onlywhen one faces normal, better, acceptable and universallyacclaimed alternatives. When thebetter alternatives are good, preferable and available, fundamentalist Muslims choosefreedom from choice. Escapefrom freedom and freedom fromchoice enables Muslims tolesser, harmful and dangerousIslamic choices. They rejoicetheir unfreedom when compelledto act on Islamic directives whichare morally wrong anduniversally condemned.

It is time for Muslims andnon-Muslims to ask the followingquestions: Does Islam assistMuslims in transformingthemselves and the Islamic

society so that Muslims canwelcome universal morality, preserve freedom, and promoteethical conduct, peace andharmony? Can Muslimsgenerally pursuing situationalethics transcend the limitedinterests of the Islamiccommunity? Both the Koran andHadith are deficient andinadequate to serve asappropriate theories of ethics forpracticing Muslims faced withethical problems and moraldilemmas. Both deal withjudgments in concrete situationsbased on subjective perceptionsof Mohamed. Mohamed madedecisions dependent on specificsituation at hand. Mohamed’ssituational ethics was based onthe uniqueness of each situationfor the advantage of Muslims.Muslims consider Mohamed’s

situational ethics is guided byAllah and is universal and nonflexible. Islamic situational ethicsprohibits Muslims fromrecognizing the existence ofmoral values and freedom ofchoice to take decisionaccording to one’s conscience.

Muslims can be moral if theyabandon their stubbornassumptions and question theirabsolute and monolithic norms.

Muslims need to follow therules of civic law and universallyaccepted moral principles.Ethical decisions cannot besolely based on Islamic valuesthe guidelines of the Koran. Inconclusion, the question stillremains: Why Muslims areafraid of freedom? Why are theyunwilling to explore their moraldecision-making processes?

But Islam is peaceful and tolerant, right?Only some unhinged, bigoted boor would go offabout killing Jews, right? Well....

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger(may peace be upon him) as saying: The lasthour would not come unless the Muslims willfight against the Jews and the Muslims wouldkill them until the Jews would hide themselvesbehind a stone or a tree and a stone or a treewould say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him;but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is thetree of the Jews. Watch for a claim of “mental illness,”distress, etc, and sob stories about his“Palestinian” origins (even there, aren’t werepeatedly told that it’s “only” Zionism that is atissue?). What will go largely unexamined in themainstream press (or quickly swept under therug) is the root of the violent fixation with Jewsbeyond the grievance du jour.

“Toledo man charged in flight fracas,” byTammy Stables Battaglia for the Detroit FreePress, January 7:

The Toledo man who Wednesday yelledracial slurs and caused a Detroit flight fromMiami to turn around is being held in a Floridajail today.

A Toledo man. That explains everything.Maybe McDonalds botched his McNuggetorder, too.

Mansor Mohammad Asad, 43, has beencharged with threats against a public servant, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest afterthe incident aboard Delta Airlines flight 2485,according to the Miami-Dade PoliceDepartment.

Witnesses told investigators that Asadyelled anti-Semitic references such as, “I’mPalestinian and I want kill all the Jews,” inArabic. The pilot turned around as the planewas taxiing for take-off at 6:35 p.m., accordingto police.

Officers then escorted the Asad off andperformed a safety inspection of the plane beforeit continued on to Detroit.

But Asad charged officers while he was incustody, using racial slurs and threats while hechanted, leading police to use a Taser to subduehim. Asad told the judge at his court appearancetoday that he didn’t feel he was a public threat.

The judge cited his death to Jews commentand the comment about the African Americanofficer and said he disagreed. He told him hewould get a lawyer appointed for the man andbring him back tomorrow.

As is well known, a Nigerian national named Umar FaroukAbdulmutallab attempted to destroy a passenger aircraft travellingfrom Amsterdam to Detroit on Dec. 25, 2009. Metal detectorscannot pinpoint the chemical in the device he sought to detonate,PETN. The PETN was strapped to his groin. Since a detonatorcould have been detected, the attacker chose — or had chosen forhim — a syringe filled with acid for use as an improvised alternativemeans to initiate the detonation. In the event, the device failed todetonate, but it did cause a fire in a highly sensitive area of theattacker’s body. An alert passenger put out the fire. The planelanded safely. It later emerged that the attacker’s father, aprominent banker in Nigeria, had gone to the US Embassy inNigeria to warn embassy officials of his concerns that his sonmight be involved with jihadists.

The incident drove home a number of points. First, while alQaeda prime — the organization that had planned and executed 9/11 — might be in shambles, other groups in other countries usingthe al Qaeda brand name and following al Qaeda prime’s ideology, remain operational and capable of mounting attacks. Second, likeother recent attacks, this attack was relatively feeble: It involved asingle aircraft, and the explosive device was not well-conceived.Third, it remained and still remains possible for a terrorist to bringexplosives on board an aircraft. Fourth, intelligence available in

The purpose ofterrorism in itspurest form is

to create asense of

insecurityamong a public.

It succeeds whenfear moves a

system to the pointwhere it can nolonger function.

This magnifies thestrength of the

terrorist by causingthe public to seethe failure of thesystem as the

result of the powerof the terrorist.

Terror networks arenecessarily sparse.

The greater thenumber of personsinvolved, the more

likely a securitybreach becomes.

Nigeria, London and elsewherehad not moved through thesystem with sufficient speed toblock the terrorist from boardingthe flight.

An Enduring Threat

From this three thingsemerge. First, although thecapabilities of jihadist terroristshave declined, theirorganizations remain functional, and there is no guarantee thatthese organizations won’tincrease in sophistication andeffectiveness. Second, themilitants remain focused on theglobal air transport system.Third, the defensivemechanisms devised since2001 remain ineffective to somedegree.

The purpose of terrorism inits purest form is to create asense of insecurity among apublic. It succeeds when fearmoves a system to the pointwhere it can no longer function. This magnifies the strength ofthe terrorist by causing thepublic to see the failure of thesystem as the result of thepower of the terrorist. Terrornetworks are necessarilysparse. The greater the numberof persons involved, the morelikely a security breach

becomes. Thus, there arenecessarily few people in aterror network. An ideal terrornetwork is global, able to strikeanywhere and in multiple placesat once. The extent of the terrornetwork is unknown, partlybecause of its security systemsand partly because it is sosparse that finding a terrorist islike finding a needle in ahaystack. It is the fact that thesize and intentions of the terrornetwork are unknown thatgenerates the sense of terrorand empowers the terrorist.

The global aspect is alsoimportant. That attacks canoriginate in many places andthat attackers can belong tomany ethnic groups increasesthe desired sense of insecurity. All Muslims are not members ofal Qaeda, but all members of alQaeda are Muslims, and anyMuslim might be a member of alQaeda. This logic is beneficialto radical Islamists, who want toincrease the sense ofconfrontation between Islamand the rest of the world. Thisnot only increases the sense ofinsecurity and vulnerability in therest of the world, it alsoincreases hostility towardMuslims, strengthening alQaeda’s argument to Muslimsthat they are in an unavoidable

state of war with the rest of theworld. Equally important is thetransmission of the idea that if alQaeda is destroyed in oneplace, it will spring upelsewhere.

This terror attack madeanother point, intended or not.US President Barack Obamarecently decided to increaseforces in Afghanistan. A largepart of his reasoning was thatAfghanistan was the origin of 9/11, and the Taliban hosted alQaeda. Therefore, he reasonedthe United States should focusits military operations inAfghanistan and neighbouringPakistan, since that was theorigin of al Qaeda. But theChristmas Day terror attemptoriginated in Yemen, a placewhere the United States hasbeen fighting a covert war withlimited military resources. Ittherefore raises the question ofwhy Obama is focusing onAfghanistan when the threatfrom al Qaeda spin-offs canoriginate anywhere.

From the terroristperspective, the Yemen attackwas a low-cost, low-riskoperation. If it succeeded inbringing down a US airliner overDetroit, the psychologicalimpact would be massive. If itfailed to do so, it would certainlyincrease a sense of anxiety, cause the US and othergovernments to institute newand expensive securitymeasures, and potentially forcethe United States into expensivedeployments of forcesinsufficient to dominate a givencountry but sufficient togenerate an insurgency. If just

Page 41: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA Kumbha sankramana February / 41

some of these things happened, the attack wouldhave been well worth the effort.

The Strategic Challenge

The West’s problem can be identified this way:There is no strategic solution to low-level terrorism,i.e., terrorism carried out by a sparse, global networkat unpredictable times and places. Strategy involvesidentifying and destroying the center of gravity of anenemy force. By nature, jihadist terrorism fails topresent a single center of gravity, or a strong point orenabler that if destroyed would destroy theorganization. There is no organization properlyunderstood, and the destruction of one organizationdoes not preclude the generation of anotherorganization.

There are two possible solutions. The first is toaccept that Islamist terrorism cannot be defeatedpermanently but can be kept below a certainthreshold. As it operates now, it can inflict occasionalpainful blows on the United States and othercountries — including Muslim countries — but itcannot threaten the survival of the nation (though itmight force regime change in some Muslimcountries).

In this strategy, there are two goals. The first ispreventing the creation of a jihadist regime in any partof the Muslim world. As we saw when the Talibanprovided al Qaeda with sanctuary, access to a stateapparatus increases the level of threat to the UnitedStates and other countries; displacing the Talibangovernment reduced the level of threat. The secondgoal is preventing terrorists from accessing weaponsof mass destruction that, while they might notthreaten the survival of a country, would certainlyraise the pain level to an unacceptable point. In otherwords, the United States and other countries shouldfocus on reducing the level of terrorist capabilities, not on trying to eliminate the terrorist threat as awhole.

To a great extent, this is the American strategy. The United States has created a system forscreening airline passengers. No one expects it toblock a serious attempt to commit terrorism on anairliner, nor does this effort have any effect on otherforms of terrorism. Instead, it is there to reassure thepublic that something is being done, to catch somecareless attackers and to deter others. But in

general, it is a system whoseinconvenience is meant to reassure.

The Challenge of IdentifyingPotential Terrorists

To the extent to which there is a centerof gravity to the problem, it is in identifyingpotential terrorists. In both the Fort Hoodattack and the Detroit incident, informationwas in the system that could have allowedauthorities to identify and stop theattackers, but in both cases, thisinformation didn’t flow to the places whereaction could have been taken. There isthus a chasm between the acquisition ofinformation and the person who has theauthority to do something about it. Thesystem “knew” about both attackers, butsystems don’t actually think or knowanything. The person with authority to stopa Nigerian from boarding the plane or whocould relieve the Fort Hood killer from duty

Page 42: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA KumbhaSankramana/Febuary / 42

lacked one or more of thefollowing: intelligence, realauthority and motivation.

The information gathered inNigeria had to be widelydistributed to be useful. It wasunknown where Abdulmutallabwas going to go or what he wasgoing to do. The number ofpeople who needed to knowabout him was enormous, fromBritish security to Amsterdamticket agents checkingpassports. Without distributingthe intelligence widely, itbecame useless. A net can’thave holes that are too big, andthe failure to distributeintelligence to all points createsholes.

Of course, the number ofpieces of intelligence that comeinto US intelligence collection isenormous. How does theperson interviewing the fatherknow whether the father hasother reasons to put his son ona list? Novels have been writtenabout father-son relations. Thecollector must decide whetherthe report is both reliable andsignificant, and the vast majority

of information coming into thesystem is neither. Theintelligence community hasbeen searching for a deus exmachina in the form ofcomputers able not only todistribute intelligence to thenecessary places but also todistinguish reliable fromunreliable, significant frominsignificant.

Forgetting the interagencyrivalries and the tendency togive contracts to corporatebehemoths with last-generationtechnology, no matter howwidely and efficiently intelligenceis distributed, at each step inthe process someone must begiven real authority to makedecisions. When JanetNapolitano or George Tenet saythat the system worked after anincident, they mean not that theoutcome was satisfactory, butthat the process operated asthe process was intended tooperate. Of course, beingfaithful to a process is not thesame as being successful, butthe US intelligence community’sobsession with process

frequently elevates processabove success. Certainly, process is needed to operate avast system, but process also isbeing used to deny peopleauthority to do what isnecessary outside the process,or, just as bad, it allows peopleto evade responsibility byadhering to the process.

Not only does the processrelieve individuals in the systemfrom real authority; it also stripsthem of motivation. In a systemdriven by process, the individualmotivated to abort the processand improvise is weeded outearly. There is no room for“cowboys,” the intelligencecommunity term for people whohope to be successful at themission rather than faithful tothe process. Obviously, we areoverstating matters somewhat, but not by as much as onemight think. Within the USintelligence and securityprocess, one daily sees goodpeople struggling to do their jobsin the face of processes thatcan’t possibly anticipate allcircumstances. The distributionof intelligence to the people whoneed to see it is, of course, indispensable, along withwhatever other decisionsupports can be contrived. But,in the end, unless individuals areexpected and motivated to makegood decisions, the process ismerely the preface to failure. Nosystem can operate withoutprocess. At the same time, noprocess can replace authority, motivation and, ultimately, common sense.

The fear of violatingprocedures cripples Western

Page 43: Aseema Hinduism

ASEEMAA Kumbha sankramana February / 43

efforts to shut down low-levelterrorism. But the proceduresare themselves flawed. Aprocess that says that in a waragainst radical Islamists, anelderly visitor from Iceland is asbig of a potential threat as atwenty-something from Yemenmight satisfy some ideologicalimperative, but it violates theprinciple of common sense andblocks the authority and themotivation to act decisively.

It is significant that this is oneof the things the Obamaadministration has changed inresponse to the attemptedbombing.

The US TransportationSecurity Administration (TSA)announced Jan. 4 that anyonetravelling from or throughnations regarded as statesponsors of terrorism as well as“other countries of interest” willbe required to go throughenhanced screening. The TSAsaid those techniques wouldinclude full-body pat downs,carry-on luggage searches, full-body scanning and explosivedetection technology. The USState Department lists Cuba,Iran, Sudan and Syria as statesponsors of terrorism. The othercountries whose passengerswill face enhanced screeninginclude Afghanistan, Algeria,Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria,Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somaliaand Yemen. A rational system ofprofiling thus appears to bedeveloping.

In all likelihood, no systemcan eliminate events such aswhat happened on Christmas, and in all likelihood, the republicwould survive an intermittent

pattern of such events — evensuccessful ones. Focusing onthe strategic level makes sense. But given the level of effort andcost involved in terroristprotection throughout the world, successful systems fordistributing intelligence andhelping identify potentiallysignificant threats are longoverdue. The US government

has been tackling this since2001, and it still isn’t working.

But, in the end, creating aprocess that precludes initiativeby penalizing those who do notfollow procedures under allcircumstances and intimidatingthose responsible for makingquick decisions from risking amistake is bound to fail.

We have the same DNAmolecule, the same DNAsequence. Our culture, ourtraditions and our cuisine are allthe same. We watch the samemovies and sing the samesongs. What is it that Indianshave and we don‘t?

INDIANS ELECT THEIRLEADERS!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!

And also to mention: Theythink of Construction of ownnation, unlike other nations whoare just concerned withdestruction of others...

Simple answer why theIndian fare better than thePakistani counterparts. Indiansdon‘t spend time and money indevising ways to kill their ownand everyone else over religion.

1. While in Pune Yervada Jailin 1930, Mahatma Gandhi used towrite weekly letters to the inmatesof his Sabarmati Ashram,Ahmedabad. The letters werewritten in Gujarati. In this series,Mahatma Gandhi wrote two letterstitled “Sarva Dharma SamaBhava”, Part I, on 23rdSeptember1930 and Part II on 30th September1930.

A general belief has beenfloating around in Hindu societythat “ Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava”is a Vedic Mantra. THIS BELIEF ISTOTALLY WRONG.

This slogan “Sarva DharmaSama Bhava” was coined byMahatma Gandhi in pursuit of hisdream of Hindu-Muslimunity. Seeing the rising demandforIndependence from British Rulein India under the leadership ofMahatma Gandhi, the Britishersplayed a game, incited the Muslimleaders to demand separationfrom Hindus and also demanded

Mahatma Gandhi’s KhilafatMovement in 1921-22 failedmiserably, caused untold misery toHindus in Kerala Region; Hindu-Muslim relationship had becomeworse than before. Hindus hadbecome very angry with MahatmaGandhi, who now searched for away to cool down the annoyanceof Hindus against him. In hiscraving for love and non-violence,he coined this slogan “SarvaDharma Sama Bhava” during his

Hindu-Muslim Unity from MahatmaGandhi as a pre-condition forconsidering Independence of Indiafrom British Rule.

With apparently goodintentions and always inclinedtowards Peace, Mahatma Gandhiwas searching for ways to fulfill thecondition of Hindu-Muslim Unityimposed by the clever BritishRulers.

“Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava” was apolitical slogan coined by MahatmaGandhi in Yervada Jail in September 1930;he has unwittingly done great harm toHindu Society. This slogan has beenmistaken as Vedic mantra.Prof. G. C. ASNANI, MSc., Ph.D. Pune

Jail-term in Yervada in September1930. The slogan looked like aspiritual Vedic Mantra of areligious nature and as such, would appeal to Hindus. WhenMahatma Gandhi consulted KakaSahib Kalelkar, who was hiscompanion in the Yervada Jail, onthis slogan, Kaka Sahibimmediately cautioned MahatmaGandhi against the new coinage, since he saw lack of truth in thisnew coinage and also greatdanger of misguiding the Hindus.Mahatma Gandhi was adamant, stuck to his new coinage, andrepeated his newly coined slogan“Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava” intwo continuous weekly letters toSabarmati Ashram inmates, on23rd and 30th September 1930.The slogan soon became verypopular with Mahatma Gandhi’sfollowers in the Congress Party. The slogan appealed to Hindusoutside Congress Party also, considering it to be a VedicMantra. Gullible Hindus becamevictims of a wrong slogan, coinedwith political intentions. Now-a-days, this wrong slogan goesaround as a Vedic Mantra, whichit is not. It is highly misleading.

2. Every Religion has threeaspects: a) Relationship betweenman and God.b) Relationship

Hindus have got totally confusedin their minds. Quite often, Hindusforget that the statement that “Allreligions teach the same thing” istrue only in respect of aspects (a)and (b) stated above; it isabsolutely untrue in respect ofaspect (c) of religion statedabove. Hindus have been and arebeing misguided and confused onthis subject.

Even in official translationfrom Gujarati into English, theobjection of Kaka Sahib Kalelkarincluding his name has beenomitted; it is there in originalGujarati Letter written by MahatmaGandhi but it is not foundin English translation. Why has thisobjection been omitted in Englishtranslation ? Is this omissionaccidental or intentional?

These letters of MahatmaGandhi are officially published andcan be obtained from NAVJIVANPUBLISHING HOUSE,AHMEDABAD, 380 014, ISBN 81-7229-063-2(in Gujarati) and ISBN81-7229-135-3 in English. Thereare 16 letters in a Booklet form inboth Gujarati and English. InGujarati, the Booklet is titled“Mangal Prabhat”; while in English, the Booklet is titled “From YervadaMandir”. The concernedLetters under reference appear atserial numbers 10 and 11 with title“Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava- I &II” respectivelydated23rd September 1930 and30th September 1930, in Gujarati;in English translation also, theyappear at serial numbers 10 and11 dated 23rd and 30th September1930, but with changed titlesTOLERANCE, i.e. EQUALITY OFRELIGIONS I & II”.

Here itself, one can seedifferent meanings among Titles of

between man and persons of thesame religion.c) Relationshipbetween man and persons ofother religions.

In respect of aspects (a)and (b) above, all Religionsteach about the same thing. Butaspect (c) is the cause of allinter-religious wars, includingHindu-Muslim problem. For usHindus, who do not belong toother religions, are particularlyinterested in aspect (c) of otherreligions.Islam is absolutely clearthat as per Allah’s command, there shall be no other religionallowed to exist on the surface ofthe Earth, except Islam; Hinduismis totally against this destructivedictum of Islam. So also isChristianity opposed to theexistence of Hinduism on thisEarth. How can we then say thatall religions teach the samething?

3. As a result of the wrongadvice and slogan “Sarva DharmaSama Bhava” coined by MahatmaGandhi and frequently quoted bymany Hindus as a sign oftolerance, it has been goingaround with an equivalentaddition: “All religions teach thesame thing”; Having had greatrespect for Mahatma Gandhi,

the same letters in Gujarati and inEnglish.

4. We Hindus should be alertand understand that “SarvaDharma Sama Bhava” is a politicalslogan, not spiritual Mantra of theVedas.

5. Gita is our Hinduspiritual Shastra; MahatmaGandhi’s political slogan is

not our spiritual dictum. Wehave great respect for thegreat work done by MahatmaGandhi, but not in everyrespect. Some of hismistakes have planted, though un-intentionally,seeds of the ruin of ourHindu Dharma, Hindusociety and Hindustan; the

word Hindustan has alreadydisappeared from ourConstitution; the rest islikely to follow if we Hindusare not careful.

We should be bold andcourageous, independentthinking people, not Sheepbleating “Sarva DharmaSama Bhava” as a spiritualMantra.

Hindu philosophy hasdimensions from rank

atheism, theism,pantheism and

beyond.

Like everything else, eventhe adherents of Hindu philoso-phy can be divided into twocamps -- Leelavadis andMayavadis.

It must be said that material-ists (Charvakavadis) in Hinduphilosophy are almost a fringegroup.

Most Hindus are eithertheists or pantheists or agnos-tics at worst.

Those who view life as leela(play of the Creator) are thosewho are high on devotion. Theybelieve in the way of the heart.

Then there are those whoview life as Maya (illusion). They are high on knowledge. Itcan be said that theirs is theway of the mind.

Both camps are highly atloggerheads with each other. While the first argues for devo-tion, the other argues for knowl-edge.

Then there is the other groupwhich believes in Swastika. The word Swastha means notjust good health and absence ofdisease. It is absolute health.

This camp argues that manas it is in a state of disease and

he has to get well soon.

They are the transcendental-ists like Ramana Maharshi whonever argued or put forth theirphilosophy but simply diveddeep into their own selves andasked others to do so.

May their tribe increase.
