pressure is proportional to theabsolute temperature. To obtain ausable temperature span, elevatedworking pressures must be usedwhich frequently produce highstresses in the Bourdon tube. These high stresses reduce instru-ment life and may be hazardous.
The Duratemp thermometer on theother hand utilizes a combination ofinert gas and activated carboncalled a molecular sieve. This com-bination produces much lower inter-nal pressures than conventionalthermometers for the same temper-ature span. These lower pressuresare transmitted to a compact helicalBourdon tube. The Bourdon tubeconnects directly to the pointershaft thus eliminating the traditionalmovement assembly.
With this advantage the Duratempthermometer is able to provide longlife and sustained accuracy underthe most adverse shock and vibra-tion conditions.
The molecular sieve concept, uti-lized by Dresser in its Duratempthermometer, offers a host of fea-tures, functions and benefits thatmake it superior to any conventionalmechanical thermometer on themarket today.
Duratemp thermometers are avail-able through our extensive distribu-tor network and our manufacturingplant in Stratford, CT.

• Gear and pinion movements are eliminated, result-ing in increased instrument life and reduced
replacement costs.
• Silicone damped Bourdon tube eliminatesdamage from shock and vibration.
The Duratemp® thermometer offersthe same outstanding quality andcraftsmanship which has character-ized all Ashcroft products since theintroduction of the Bourdon tube toAmerican industry in 1852.
Uncompromising standards havebeen established for materials andworkmanship. The finished productassures the user of superior durabil-ity and dependability.
All Duratemp thermometers useand actuation concept unique to thefield of temperature measurement, called a “molecular sieve.” Thisdesign represents a technicaladvancement over conventional gasand mercury thermometers.
Research and development of amolecular sieve thermometer beganin 1964 when the US Navy askedthermometer manufacturers todevelop a remote thermometer thatwas both linear and mercury free. In1970 Dresser received Navyapproval on the molecular sievethermometer and for over a decadewas the only manufacturer to com-ply with the Navy’s rugged require-ments. Today’s Duratemp is a directoffshoot of the Navy thermometer, and incorporates in its design all the features found in the originalNavy design.
The superiority of a Duratemp ther-mometer is revealed by comparisonto conventional thermometry.Conventional gas thermometersoperate on the principlethat the absolute

Product Selection Information
WarningDuratemp thermometers should be selected con-sidering the media and the ambient operating con-ditions. Improper application can be detrimental tothe thermometer, cause failure and possible injuryor property damage.
The information contained in this bulletin is offeredas a guide in making the proper selection of an in-dustrial thermometer. Additional information is avail-able from Dresser Industries, Instrument Division.
Temperature RangesStandard Fahrenheit and Celsius ranges havebeen established to encompass all normal temper-ature measurement requirements.
Operating ConditionsThe maximum case temperature should notexceed 160°F (71°C). The line should be laid sothat it will not be exposed to extreme temperaturessuch as alongside of steam pipes, ovens or otherheated surfaces.
ThermowellsThermowells must be used on any applicationwhere the bulb of the thermometer may be
exposed to pressure, corrosive fluids or high veloc-ity. Additionally, the use of a thermowell permitsinstrument interchangeability or recalibration with-out shutting down the process.
CasesFive case styles and three different materials are offered: aluminum alloy, stainless steel andphenolic. Each is designed with a removable ring.
BulbsThe bulb is manufactured of AISI 316 stainlesssteel. The sensing portion for all ranges is 3⁄8˝diameter by 3.˝
DialsAluminum dials have highly legible black markingson a white background. The Maxivision dial is a lin-ear anti-parallax dial for excellent readability in the41⁄2˝ and 6˝ sizes. The divisions and the pointer arein the same plane which allows readability fromany angle without parallax error.
