REVAMP OF DOHA PORT INTO CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL TO START THIS YEAR

Qatar Tourism Authority has announced that TUI cruises will be including Qatar in its itineraries for the 2017-18 season, bringing seven cruise ships with up to 17,500 visitors to Qatar.

The agreement between QTA and TUI Cruises comes as a result of discussions started at the Seatrade Europe Forum held in Hamburg in 2015 and puts Qatar on track to achieve its target of 250,000 visitors aboard cruise ships in 2019.

The Qatar Ports Management Company 'Mwani Qatar' ” has confirmed the berthing schedule for the cruise ships.

"The cruise tourism sector in Qatar provides huge opportunities for the growth of the country's overall tourism industry and is central to the realization of the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030," commented Hassan al Ibrahim, Chief Tourism Development Officer at QTA.

"The commitment of TUI Cruises to include Qatar in its 2017-18 itineraries is testament to the significant development that the sector is undergoing, and gives us an encouraging boost as we continue to pursue other major cruise liners. Qatar is set to receive between 35-40 ships in the upcoming 2016-

17 cruise season, bringing in an expected 55,000 passengers," he said.

QTA is working closely with Mwani Qatar to expand the various elements of the country's cruise industry, in particular, Doha Port, which will be undergoing redevelopment in the coming months to transform it into a full-time cruise terminal and tourist attraction.

How many years have you been in the hospitality industry?

I started my career with Hyatt Hotels for the opening of their first Hotel in India “Hyatt Regency Delhi” in 1983. After launching my career and gaining experience I shifted towards the GCC in 1986 and joined the Intercontinental Hotel Team in Muscat, Oman. After residing 7 years in Oman, opportunity knocked on my door and I moved to Abu Dhabi, where I joined “Forte Grand Abu Dhabi” – currently known as Le Royal Meridien Abu Dhabi – for the pre-opening. Having stayed in Abu Dhabi for 7 years, in the year 2000, I moved to Dubai and joined Jumaira International for the preopening of Jumaira Emirates Towers. Then in 2006, I joined Kempinski Hotels for the preopening of Kempinski Mall of Emirates Dubai until I came to Doha, Qatar in 2007 to join Millennium Hotels & Resorts. We then launched Kingsgate Hotel in 2011 and Copthorne Hotel in 2012. Afterwards, in 2015, I moved to Al Sraiya Hotels & Hospitality Group – the mother company of our hotels – to supervise the operation and monitor the financial growth of our local and international properties.

Tell us about the history of Al Sraiya Hospitality Group and how it progressed to become what it is now

Under the dynamic and visionary leadership of our Vice Chairman Mr. Rashid Al Kaabi, our hotels have grown from just one in 2007 to eight in 2016.We first launched the initial brand under Millennium Hotels & Resorts in 2007, “Millennium Hotel Doha”. The hotel reached to such a level of success, it marked its brand in the Qatari market.In December 2011, we then launched “Kingsgate Hotel Doha” that falls under Millennium Hotels & Resorts; the hotel achieved 100% occupancy from the day we opened it. Then, in June 2012, we opened Copthorne Hotel Doha that is also under Millennium Hotels & Resorts.

After proving ourselves in the local market, our Vice Chairman decided to take on new challenges and seek to invest internationally. Hence, we acquired “The Edward Hotel” in London in 2013, then in 2015 we added two more properties to our group by acquiring “Presidential Serviced Apartments London” and “Marriott Munich

Hotel” in Germany. Our growth and success led us to get in 2016 “Mowbray Court Hotel” in London and Club Quarters in Washington D.C.

It has been a remarkable, prosperous journey with a rapid growth under the leadership of our Vice Chairman, trusting that in the future, our success

will double.

After acquiring 3 hotels in London, 1 in Munich and 1 in the United States of America, what are your future development plans and what is your next destination?

We are planing to open a new property towards the end of 2016, in Qatar - a high end serviced apartments.We are also in the process of acquiring some new hotels abroad.

Are you planning to stay in the hotels business only, or plan on expanding to F&B?

As we are in the hospitality business, we will not limit our exposure

to only hotels. We have future plans to go into F&B but that will be on the longer run.

Have you ever been a guest at one of the properties owned by the group? What would you improve?

Yes, I have been a guest at all our properties except at Club Quarters. I would like our hotels to improve on our customer focus, thereby provide impeccable service to our guests, so that they feel at home, enjoy their time and have unforgettable stays at our hotels. I would also like our hotels to have unparalleled service standards, this will make our hotels unique which will further help to flourish our growth.

MACRO PROVIDES MANAGED SERVICES AT THE DECC

It has been a busy time since our introductory article with several significant opportunities in the pipeline, despite the downturn in the economy. The profile of enquiries has changed slightly in that there would appear to be a desire for the large corporates to ensure that they are getting value both from their assets and from their existing contracts and they need help doing that in the form of consultancy or advisory services and we have been engaged in putting together proposals in response to this need. Value and quality are two of our key drivers which obviously equates to a cost, not necessarily or usually the lowest cost but one that delivers right first time solutions and over the length of the contract provides a consistent and definable level of quality. Cost of course is always the main concern but quite often the lowest cost does not deliver what is required or best, most discerning clients now consider value as the key driver. It’s a bit like buying something at a cheap shop and then it breaking the first time you use it – pay the right price for the right quality product and it will last longer.

Since our last article were we reported on several opportunities - we are glad to report success in winning two major commissions, the first to provide ‘managed services’ at the Doha Exhibition and Conference Centre where we have deployed a full management team and have been able to generate business for our sister company Premium Cleaning, who now provide the cleaning services for the Centre. Another recent success has been the award of a consultancy and managed service contract with the Ministry of Education and

Higher Education for Facilities and Asset Management services to over 250 schools across Qatar. This is an exciting opportunity to show the wider Government the benefit of managing their assets in a structured, cohesive and best in class manner and we are confident that we can improve quality and efficiency on this contract and therefore achieve better value for money.

There are a lot of other opportunities on the horizon such as Qatar Rail and other World Cup supporting projects as well as the needs being generated at Lusail City so we are optimistic that we can get slices from these cakes and become the Facilities and Asset Management Company of choice in Qatar. This could bring wider benefits and openings for the extended Macro family of Mace and Al Srayia – onwards and upwards !
