• The state flower is: Dogwood 

• The state tree is: Pine Tree

 

State FlagThe State Flag of North Carolina is red, white, and blue. The blue is displayed on the left side in a vertical bar while the red and white are displayed on the left in horizontal bars. In the blue bar, the letter NC and a star are surrounded by the dates. The first date, "May 20, 1775," refers to the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence and "April 12th, 1776" is the date that commemorates the Halifax Resolves.

 

State Nickname

North Carolina has 2 nicknames: The Old North State, and The Tar Heel State.

The Old North State was given because this part of the Carolina colony is older and when they separated the two states the “old” stayed with the northern half.

The Tar Heel State is a mystery but is believed to have derived from the states long history as a producer of naval stores.

State History

First Inhabitants:• Bear River Indians (Algonquian)

• As of 1701, they had a single village with only about 50 warriors.• Cape Fear Indians (unknown)

• They lived near the mouth of the Cape Fear River.

 Exploration o Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh explored first

and they were both from Great Britain

Settlement o The first post-explorer settlement was Albemarle, North

Carolina. It was started after family land was divided and used for personal use.

• Colonial Days o The early colonial days in North Carolina was complicated and

included corrupt officials, violent rebellion, Indian War, isolation, disease, hurricanes, and pirates.

 • Territorial Days

o North Carolina became a royal colony in 1663. After this land was obtained by purchasing it.

This state became the 12th state in the United States on November 21, 1789.  The first Governor of the state was Richard Caswell.

state and what percent of the population? The ethnic groups that are represented in North Carolina are White, Hispanic, African American, Asian and American Indian. The percent for Asians is 1.77%, Hispanic 4.71%, White 72.1%, African American 21.6%, and American Indian 1.2%.

• Minerals • Gold- At one point NC produced a large about of gold. • Quartz and feldspar- These minerals are used in

television picture tubes.• Kaolin Clay- is used in dinnerwear

• Plant Life • There is around 642 different types of trees, woody

vines and shrubs. A native tree is the Fraser Fir which grows naturally in the Appalachians, Virginia, and Georgia.

• Coastal Plain Serviceberry is a shurb that is found in areas that are wet and is uncommon in the state.o Animal Life o Atlantic FlyWAY Tundra Swan- Migrate to the northeastern

parts of North Carolina where 65-75 thousands live for the winter, because of a large amount of food to live off of.

o Mussels- there are over 50 different species of mussels in North Carolina and they are either endangered, threatened or special concern.

Places to Visit

The Outer Banks is a place that anyone can go to and find something they enjoy. On days that the sun is shinning and a light breeze that brushes your face, you can find your way to one of the most relaxing beaches. The natural environment creates a calm and peace full place where all your worries can wash way in the ocean waves. If you aren’t in the mood for the beach you can go to see the Lost Colony play rated the number 1 outdoors play. Here you will find a live performance that will capture you and bring the events come real to you for the time being. If both of these fail there is still more to see, such as the beautiful light houses that follows the curves of the of coast North Carolina. There is a beautiful sight that is awaiting you at the top of the light house where you can see miles away on a clear summer day. This is only a small insight of what you will experience when you visit the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
