Managers and supervisors can help to build the safety culture intheir area of responsibility through the simple expedient ofvisibility. In other words, they need to demonstrate a solid and on-going commitment to the corporate safety culture through theiractions rather than just through their words. Words are nice, andultimately necessary, but personal actions are where the rubbermeets the road.

One way to achieve management safety visibility is for managers andsupervisors to make periodic “safety sweeps” through the shop flooror work area. Such management sweeps should be conductedindependent of any formal inspections performed by the SafetyDepartment or by company personnel specifically designated tohandle safety issues. Of course, joint inspections by Safety andmanagement are necessary and should be done, but the mainpurpose of independent sweeps conducted by managers andsupervisors is to drive home the point that management itself isconcerned with employee safety and that its importance is equal tothat of basic production.

At a time when agricultural employers arestruggling to find workers, access to qualitychild care can aid in worker recruitment, improve retention and boost employeemorale. The resource, developed with input fromagricultural business owners, humanresources directors, insurance providers,Head Start child care specialists and farmworker parents, is part of the, “ProtectingChildren While Parents work in Agriculture”project, an initiative of the NationalChildren’s Center and Migrant CliniciansNetwork. Funding is provided by theNational Institute for Occupational Safetyand Health.“The Roadmap is designed to assistindividuals and organizations in identifyingchallenges and assets within their localregions regarding child care services forchildren of agricultural workers,” said Lee,one of the Roadmap’s contributors. “Thislocal knowledge, combined with thereferences and resources in the Roadmap, will pave the way for developing an actionplan that can help foster access to child care.”
