BABY BUMMIT FUNDRAISING PACK 2018

BABY BUMMIT FUNDRAISING PACK 2018 This is the fundraising pack for Baby Bummit to Bristol 2018! It contains all the important information you will need to help you reach your sponsorship total.

Here are some of the key points;

Everyone taking part has to raise a minimum of £80 for some brilliant charities. We strongly encourage you to try to raise more than £80, the money goes to four amazing causes!

The deadline for raising money is the 3rd of December, this means that you have from when you’ve bought your ticket until just under a month after Baby Bummit to make sure you’ve reached your target.

Please only use Virgin Money Giving for your online fundraising. A step by step guide to setting up your VMG account can be found on pages 5-9. Gift aid on Virgin Money Giving unfortunately doesn’t count towards your overall sponsorship total.

We’ll be running RAG Raids into the town centre and organising slots to sell Glow sticks and glitter at Roar/Poptarts – more details of these will be posted on Facebook closer to the time.

You can also organise your own fundraising events from a bake sale to a house party, if you have any questions about how to do this or any questions in general please email [email protected] or contact Brian Bummit

Sponsorship Fundraising on Facebook. We’d love to hear your ideas and we would be happy to help out!

HELLO HITCHHIKERS!First of all, congrats on grabbing a coveted place for this year’s Baby Bummit, which as you’ll know is heading to Bristol!

Bummit is a charity hitchhiking society that was set up in 2003. We are part of the Sheffield RAG (Raising & Giving) society, which falls under the jurisdiction of the University of Sheffield's Students Union.

Bummit is the world's largest student organised hitch-hiking group! Every year we run two hitchhiking events, one to somewhere in the UK (that you’ve managed to get a ticket for!) and one to a currently undisclosed location in Europe that will be announced in Bristol, and that you’ve got a guaranteed ticket for as you’ve been on Baby!

Every year we raise lots of money for some brilliant charities (the ones we’ve chosen this year are outlined further on page 10) and we can only raise it with your help! Read on to find out ways that you’ll be able to raise money…

How to stay updated with what we’re up to:

need advice on how to hitchhike from where you are) The Bummit Bible (with hitching tips and an official letter from the SU)

Unfortunately, your ticket doesn’t include return transport back from Bristol, but we’ve organised a coach home with limited spaces! https://su.sheffield.ac.uk/groups/bummit-committee/events/bristol-return-coach

Your £80 sponsorship

Please be sure that you have handed in your sponsorship cheques as soon as possible, the deadline for handing your deposit is Monday 29th of October!

Please write a cheque of £80 out to The University of Sheffield Students Union and write your name, UCARD number and email address on the back. The deadline for fundraising is the 3rd of December. If you are unsuccessful in raising your minimum sponsorship before midday of this date then we will have to cash your sponsorship cheques. However, if you successfully reach your target then we will simply shred your cheque and you can breathe a sigh of relief!

If you don’t already have a cheque book and you’re not sure how to order one, hopefully one of these links will help;

13. Start sharing the link with your friends, family and acquaintances on Facebook/Twitter etc. – it’s surprising how generous people can be, and this method requires very little effort! We strongly recommend doing this as it’s a great way to boost publicity for you fundraising efforts!

Gift Aid is NOT included in your total:

Please be aware that when using your Virgin Money Giving page, those who are kind enough to sponsor you can tick the box to include a gift aid donation if they are eligible to do so – please encourage them to tick the box if applicable. However, the rules of VMG mean that gift aid is NOT included towards your total, so you still need to raise £80 without the inclusion of gift aid amount.

The Gift Aid that is added to your donations is received and retained by Sheffield RAG and contributes towards covering department expenses so that events like Bummit can be put on!

Charities:

Ashiana Sheffield - Supporting and empowering those from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) communities whose lives have been affected by violence and abuse to take control of their lives and move forward into healthy, stable and safer futures.

Framework Housing Association - A charity delivering housing, health, employment, support and care services to people with a diverse range of needs. Empowering people to achieve financial stability, social inclusion and independence.

Zest – An award-winning community enterprise delivering high quality and responsive services to local people. Zest manage a flagship community building, the Zest Centre, and deliver a range of integrated community, leisure, health and work support services to adults and children from across Sheffield.

Live At Home - Enabling older people to stay living independently in their own homes for as long as possible, with the best possible quality of life. Live At Home aim to tackle isolation by promoting independence and wellbeing. They also organise regular outings to places such as garden centres and local concerts as well as lunch and social clubs.

We definitely encourage you to familiarise yourself with the charities, it’s important to be able to explain who you’re raising money for!

Offline Fundraising - How, where and when?

RAG Raids:

RAG Raids are where you come and get a fundraising permit and bucket from us in the SU and head off in to town to allow the generous people of Sheffield a chance to show support our chosen charities. We have several RAG Raids booked where you will need to come down to the Activities & Sports Zone between 11am and 3pm to get your permit and bucket. There are 8 permits available per time slot, so we recommend arriving a bit early as we work it on a first come, first serve basis.

More info about RAG raids will be on Facebook soon!

What should you do when you’ve got your bucket and permit?

Head off to your designated area (it will be usually be somewhere in Fargate, Tudor Square, or Barkers Pool), ideally try and spread yourselves out if there are a few other Bummit fundraisers about so that the public don’t feel over-bombarded and so that you’re more likely to get a donation.

PLEASE DO NOT SHAKE YOUR BUCKET, IT IS TECHNICALLY ILLEGAL! However, making your bucket visible and ensuring that you’re seen and heard is good!

Short, snappy sentences such as “any spare change? / helping local charities / spare a penny for Sheffield RAG?” are advised, but remember some details about the charities we’re raising for, people ARE interested in knowing where their money is going!

Fancy dress is a MASSIVE help on RAG raids... people love a good fancy dress costume, especially when there’s a particular holiday/event theme that you can work to your advantage (Eg. Christmas, Easter) so put aside your embarrassment and don your best fancy dress!

People have successfully raised lots of money from RAG Raids in previous years and while we know that standing in cold Northern weather isn’t always the top of your to-do list, you’ll usually find that people admire your dedication because of this.

Page 11: Ashiana Sheffieldrag.union.shef.ac.uk/uploads/Bristol 2018 Baby Bummit... · Web view– If you don’t fancy dressing up on a RAG Raid but have a musical talent you wish to share

11

Details of RAG Raids will be available on Facebook nearer the time.

Street teams:

This involves selling glow-sticks (it won’t always be glow sticks as RAG provides the things to sell) in Bar One from 9pm and then outside the Union before Roar or Poptarts. These are limited to 5 people per night so keep a keen eye on the Facebook Group as they’ll be allocated on a first-come first-serve basis and are very popular.

Stalls in the SU:

I’ll help you book a stall either inside or outside the SU to raise money in whatever way (within reason) you’d like to fundraise, the most common use is for cake sales, but the more creative the idea the better! Contact me via email or on Facebook if you’d like to book a space!

Other fundraising ideas for you to organise but we’ll help you if needed!

Fancy dress – maybe you could promise to wear a garish choice of fancy dress for a full day of lectures if you raise enough sponsorship in a certain amount of time. Get your whole team to join in!

Hosting a house party – a tried and tested idea is to charge a small fee for entry to a house party. Just so you’re aware events like these aren’t covered my union insurance and they are ‘in aid of Bummit’, not ‘by Bummit’.

A staying in, going out night – Organise a fun night in for your house/flat, buy snacks Etc. in bulk and ask people to pay what they would normally spend on a night out.

Come Dine With Me – Charge your friends £5 for a meal and donate the profits towards your sponsorship.

Loose change jar – Put a jar by the door and get everyone in your house/flat to chuck in their coppers, it all adds up!

Get rid of your unwanted things – You could sell unwanted clothes and belongings on eBay/Depop or a similar site.

Car wash – Post a note through your neighbours’ doors explaining why you’re raising money and that you’ll clean their car for a small donation. Make sure you don’t buy cleaning equipment until someone has asked you to do it!

Page 12: Ashiana Sheffieldrag.union.shef.ac.uk/uploads/Bristol 2018 Baby Bummit... · Web view– If you don’t fancy dressing up on a RAG Raid but have a musical talent you wish to share

12

Busking – If you don’t fancy dressing up on a RAG Raid but have a musical talent you wish to share with the world, our permits also cover busking so grab your guitar and give it a go!

Raffle – Buy something students would like and sell raffle tickets for a £1 a ticket or £3 a strip!

Fundraising top tips

DOBe confident and plan it!

Sponsorship isn’t difficult to raise if you put a little bit of time and effort in, but if you leave it until the last minute then you may just find yourself in a bit of a panic. Make sure you’ve started to raise some or think of ideas at least two weeks before the hitchhike. We also encourage everyone taking part to share their Virgin Money Giving page of their Facebook account, this is a great way of finding donors.

Know the facts

Unfortunately, people can sometimes misunderstand the purpose of Bummit and assume what you are raising goes towards you gallivanting off on a holiday, while Bummit is fun it’s not a holiday! In this case, reassure them that the money you raise goes directly to the charities and that hitchhiking is a challenging experience.

Know which charities are involved

Have a little read of our charity descriptions and maybe even visit their websites for extra information so that you can explain to people when they ask which they undoubtedly will! You might also be interested in some of our volunteering opportunities with these charities, so keep a look out for emails and details on Facebook etc.

Be original

Bummit is pretty unique, but if you do something different/hold an event to raise awareness of what you’re doing as well, people are far more likely to support you! However, we like to maintain a good reputation so if you’re

Page 13: Ashiana Sheffieldrag.union.shef.ac.uk/uploads/Bristol 2018 Baby Bummit... · Web view– If you don’t fancy dressing up on a RAG Raid but have a musical talent you wish to share

13

unsure whether your idea might be a little... debatable, please run it past us in advance!

Be happy and friendly!

Staying upbeat and smiley will go a long way when it comes to fundraising. If you look moody or bored when asking for sponsorship there is little point in bothering. If you’re passionate and enthusiastic, you will most definitely raise more. This is particularly true with RAG raids and glow stick selling. Sometimes people might not want to donate, but that’s just the way it is so don’t take it personally and remain cool and friendly, even if they are a bit brusque!

DON’TPressure your potential sponsor.

Not everyone is going to be in a position to donate so don’t worry if people say no. Even if someone can’t donate you have still raised awareness for Bummit, which is also important.

Ask twice

If someone can’t or chooses not to give, don’t ask them again, this could be seen as rude and could damage the reputation of Bummit. However, if someone has said they’ll sponsor you, but has forgotten to do so, it’s ok to give them a polite and very grateful nudge!

Give Bummit a bad rep

Before you do anything to raise money please think it over twice and if in doubt about whether or not it’s a good idea just drop us a message!

To check that an idea is ok or if you have any problems please email [email protected], contact Brian Bummit Sponsorship Fundraising on Facebook or email the
