THE BEST OF THE BEST:YOUR SCHOLARS

TIM KINSEYTim Kinsey is an undergraduate student in the final year of his UCI mechanical engineering program. Outside of classes, Tim enjoys running, playing music, working on graphic designs and models, playing video games, and volunteering with service groups like the 501st Legion. He grew up in San Diego with his mom, dad, and younger brother, Andrew. Both of Tim’s parents are college graduates, so he understands the importance of a college education.

In Tim’s own words, “I knew UC Irvine was the right choice for me because of the excellence of the engineering program, the great environment on and around campus, and most of all, the generosity shown by groups like the Alumni Association in helping me meet the financial obligations of attending college. During my time at UCI, I have worked hard to maintain strong academic performance and put the principles I learn in my classes to positive use. I have been involved with design projects such as Unmanned Search and Rescue and AIAA Design-Build-Fly. I have also worked on research projects to help reduce pipe corrosion. After graduation, I plan to work as a mechanical engineer and become a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) so I can design and build better products and improve quality of life for everyone.”

Anh Nguyen is a Distinguished Anteater Award (DAA) scholar and a member of the Student Alumni Association (SAA.) Anh was introduced to SAA her freshman year, and now, as a graduating senior, she is grateful for all that the Alumni Association has done for her during her UCI career. Anh held her first leadership position as an SAA member, as Director for Dinners for 12 Anteaters. Last year’s dinner made Anh keenly aware of the strong sense of commitment of our alumni. As this year’s producer for UCI Care-A-Thon, Anh and her team were able to donate over $30,000 to the premature babies at UCI Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It was also through SAA that Anh learned about the Distinguished Anteater Award.

In Anh’s own words, “It humbles me that UCIAA believes I am qualified enough to be a recipient. The scholarship has definitely helped me throughout the school year, and will continue to help as I go through the process of medical school applications. The Alumni Association has provided me with many opportunities to discover my potential on campus as well as learn more about medicine through the alumni I have met. While I am reluctant for my last year to end, I look forward to contributing to UCI as an alumna and sharing my experiences to the undergraduates who are still finding their way through college.”

UCIAA scholarships support and retain the best and brightest students to UCI. Each year, more than $100,000 is awarded to UCI students through the UCI Alumni Association. It is through the financial support of alumni, family and friends that the association is able to provide this tremendous service to our students.

INCOMING STUDENTS: ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP AWARDThis invitation-only award is open to incoming freshmen and transfer students only who demonstrate academic excellence, community service and leadership potential.

DISTINGUISHED ANTEATER AWARDSThis merit-based award, created in January 2007, rewards and acknowledges current UCI students who demonstrate commitment to UC Irvine through their involvement and contribution to campus affiliated programs, clubs or projects.

THE DAN AND JEAN ALDRICH FELLOWSHIP AWARDThis newly established fellowship is in development, with criteria to be announced shortly. Successful candidates will exemplify the pioneering, innovative, and leadership qualities exemplified by our founding Chancellor, Dan Aldrich, and our founding First Lady, Jean Aldrich.

WENDY LEEWendy Lee is a first year nursing major. Born and raised in Garden Grove, California, Wendy never saw herself attending UCI. Her ultimate decision to stay close to home turned out to be a blessing in disguise. She was part of the Antleader Mentorship Program as a mentee, a program built to help first year students with their transition into college. Wendy is now a member of M.E.M.O., a nonprofit organization that helps the underprivileged in Vietnam seek healthcare and education, and she is a volunteer at Hoag Hospital as a Health Scholar, where she has gained valuable insight into the healthcare field.

In Wendy’s own words, “So many opportunities have opened up for me because I chose UCI. I have had truly humbling experiences with the patients I’ve been fortunate enough to work with at Hoag Hospital. All of this would not be possible without the generosity of the scholarship donors. Thank you so much for this scholarship, for allowing me to do what I love, and for helping me pursue my dreams.”

MELISSA LYMelissa Ly is second year public health science student whose dream it is to become a doctor. She is involved in many organizations on campus such as the Peer Health Educator program, Global Health Research Education and Translation (GHREAT), and Student Health Outreach. Melissa’s focus is in global health, and she hopes to someday improve the lives of those in underprivileged communities around the world by combating global health disparities.

In Melissa’s own words, “Thanks to the generous scholarship I have received from the UCI Alumni Association, I've been able to pay for my lab fees, books, school supplies, daily expenses and more. My lifelong dream of attending medical school would not be possible without the generous support from scholarship sponsors like the Alumni Association. I hope to one day repay the generosity the Alumni donors have given me by devoting my life to serving in health care and to provide monetary support to students who are hoping to fulfill their dreams.”

NIK WARRENNik Warren is a fourth year public health policy student who transferred to UCI in the fall of 2014 because of the renowned Program in Public Health and the world-class research opportunities. Nik’s very first course that fall was taught by the same professor who became her research advisor, and who continues as Nik’s advisor while Nik completes the Honors Research Program in Public Health and prepares for UROP. Nik credits this mentorship to her success and counts this type of opportunity as one of the most positive aspects of UCI.

In Nik’s own words, “Being accepted to UCI is a dream come true, but scholarships make dreams possible. Just after my first quarter in December, 2014, I was injured. My life changed. Thanks to your generosity and services on campus, I have been able to forge ahead and will complete my program with honors. My next step is the graduate school application process. Public health remains my goal and UCI is my top choice. It is simply the best.”
