MANICUR E FOR AN M.F . A.
Vanity Projects 99 Chrystie St .• nr. Grand St.,
Ste. 2F; 646-410-2928
For those who feel like th'ey should be soaking up some culture, but could really use a manicure, the weekend quandary has been solved, thanks to Rita Pinto's new art -gallery-meets-nail-salon. A curator turned nail technician, Pinto realized that the painstaking process of nail art (those custom-painted leopard spots or Disney characters can take up to two hours) meant she had a captive audience. So she set up two large projector screens that feature a rotating series
of video artists like Shannon Plumb, who's known for morphing herself onscreen into anyone from a boxer to a fashion model. (Headphones are provided for any customer who wants to fully engage with the work.) Meanwhile, Pinto also enlists rotating guest nail artists such as Miku Tsutaya from Tokyo or Virginia-based mani-celebrity Regina Rodriguez, who's had fans stop her outside the shop. Prices start at about $70, but you can get a regular manicure from $18.
FA NCY CROSSFIT
Brick New York 257 W 17th St. , nr. Eighth Ave.
646·692-4005
CrossFit has become just as well known for its grueling tire-lifting regimens as it has for the bare-bones ''boxes" where the workouts typically take place. Brick New York, which opened last summer in Chelsea, is decidedly ungaragelike in its ambience-a glossy 13,000 square feet
llO NEW YO RK I MARCH 10 - 23, 2014
spread over two floors, with amenities galore. That's not to say that Hulks-in-training won't find the hard-core intervals typical of a CrossFit curriculum (from $32 per class); it's just that, afterward, you can restore yourself with a trip to the lockerroom sauna or a drink from the smoothie bar. Hourlong yoga classes to relieve throbbing muscles are offered, too.
PHARMACIST
Stanley,s Pharmacy 31 Ludlow St., at Hester St.
646-476-9622
The corner drugstore may have gone the way of the egg cream, but Bronx-bred pharmacist Stanley George has reintroduced the conceptalbeit in a thoroughly modemway-withhispharmacycum-juice bar. A beach mural covers an entire wall, and Astrud Gilberta tunes thrum in the background while George chats up customers with holistic advice, harking back to a time before the
reign of pharmacists who avoid eye contact. Pick up a standard prescription or bottle of Advil (all the merchandise is stocked behind the register), or let him suggest a more homespun remedy, whether it's a healthyhair regimen of L-cysteine, Inasitol, and keratin supplements, or a cocktail from the wellness bar like the roseand-mint-infused Chillax ($3 per shot). Considering the neighborhood's partyall-night crowd, the Stanley's Pharmacy Hangover Tea ($4), with lapacho bark and hawthorn berries, is another popular choice.
HAND RESTORATION

Dr. luis Navarro at the Vein
Treatment Center 327 E. 65th St., nr. First Ave.
212-249-6117
Those who are beginning to feel bad about their necks may feel similarly not so great about their handsand the protruding veins that grow ever more prominent as the skin loses elasticity. Dr. Navarro, the_founding surgeon at the Vein Treatment Center and "a three-decade specialist in the field, has developed a fix for this issue: a painless 30-minute treatment called cryo sclerotherapy ($1,000). Ice-cold blasts of air numb the area imd five tiny needles are used to inject a mild chemical-based solution into the vein, causing it to shrink and then disappear within two weeks. Some patients require a follow-up session ( $500 ), but for the most plu-t, just be diligent about applying sunscreen, and the results should last long term.
(ALMOST ENTIRELY) PAINLESS
HAIR REMOVAL
light Sheer Duet laser at Rita Hazan 720 Fifth Ave., at 56th St., 11th fl.
2.12-586-4343
For many, the promise of a permanently stubble-free bikini line simply isn't worth the wrath of a laser that
stings like a box jellyfish. That's why the Rita Hazan hair salon introduced the Light Sheer Duet (from $150 for each of the recommended six to eight treatments). The laser's vacuumassisted technology reduces pain (the hand-piece feels like a suction against the skin, rather than a cauter) while increasing efficiency (it takes only one to five minutes, depending on the body part). A smaller, more traditional (read: unpleasant) attachment is required for certain crevices, but a patented cooling system minimizes irritation, and aesthetician Lele Gomes's Soul Cycle-instructor-like encouragement-"You're doing great!" "Almost done!"- gets you through it.
QUICKIE MAKEOVER
Rouge New York 130 Thompson St., m: Prince St.
212-388-1717
Thanks to the recent blowdry-bar boom, New Yorkers are well versed in the concept of a $40 night-out coif. Now there's a similar service· for getting a flawless mug. Founded by Law 0 Order: SVU star Stephanie March and her on-set makeup artist Rebecca Perkins, this cosmetics salon offers a menu of 30-minute makeover options. "You ... Only Better" ($50) is a minimal look, which involves Perkins applying a dusting of contouring powder to cheekbones and hiding blemishes with a brush dabbed in concealer. "Total Polish" ($75) incorporates bolder finishes like a brightred lip. The products are a mix of drugstore standbys (L'Oreal Voluminous mascara) and boutique brands (Julie Hewett lipsticks), all of which are for sale. Proof that the makeup-bar trend is already taking off: Pucker (129 Grand St., nr. Crosby St.; 212-334-3690 ), which opened shortly after Rouge, in February, offers similar services with the addition of a downstairs locker room where officeto-drinks customers can store clunky bags and boots overnight.

COASTAL LIFE
McMurray at her Shelter Island cottage
•
Nat~~SI(§~c;I~ty protecting your skin an ultra luxe and all-natural affair
38 BY MARISA SPYKER PHOTOGRAPHS BY BROOKE SLEZAK
ith her glowing skin, her bare feet, and her brightly patterned tunic,
Valerie McMurray-founder of lux-ury suncare line Soleil Organique
looks like she belongs at the beach. So it's hard to believe that, just a few years ago, her life was filled with business suits, corporate meetings, and fast-paced city schedules. "I worked in finance in New York City for years," she says. "But it wasn't for me. I knew I didn't want to do that forever."
While working in New York, McMurray met her husband, a fellow financier and an avid sailor who loved weekending along the coasts of New England. The couple's shared love of the sea prompted them to purchase a summer home on Shelter Island-which is where McMurray formed her big idea. "I was pregnant one summer while we were here, and I was really into finding natural alternatives for everything," she says. "But when I t ried mineral-based sunscreens, I ended up covered in a sticky, spackle-like substance that left this chalky white hue on my skin. I couldn't find any other options."
Soleil Organique became McMurray's entrepreneurial project-she worked with chemists to develop the perfect formula of all-natural ingredients, such as sun-repellent titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, red algae, and vitamin E. "I envisioned something that protected your skin, but also felt luxurious going on," she says. In its two-year history, the brand-which now encompasses skincare and suncare products boasting anti-aging, fi rming, and moisturizing benefits-has taken off, expanding into high-end resorts from the Caribbean to California (as well as online).
Fortunately, running the business gives McMurray freedom to spend more time at home with her three young kids-Fletch~r, Tate, and Thea-and to escape more often to the Shelter Island cottage. "We spend most of our summers here," she says. "It's a boating haven, and our home is right across from the harborperfect for someone who loves to sail." And plenty of time outdoors-from clamming at Coecles Harbor in preparat ion for the night's dinner or hitting the beach at Reel Point to soaking up the sun on the patio at home-means plenty of time for McMurray to personally test her products. "The kids are in the pool from the moment they wake up, and we usually sail around the island during the day," she says. "So we're always reapplying sunscreen! " ~
McMURRAY'S SUMMERTIME SECRETS
HOW TO LOOK 10 YEARS
YOUNGER "Use a daily ' moistu rizer conta ining . sodium hyaluronate-it's a natural hydrator derived from hyalu ronic acid, one of the ma in ingredients in injectable fill ers. It easily penetrates skin and helps deeply moisturize and reduce the appearance of wrinkles."
THE SKINNY ON SPF
NUMBERS "An SPF 30 sunscreen blocks 9l percent of UVB rays, wh ile an SPF 50 blocks only 1 percent more. The add itiona l benefits of a higher SPF are somewhat neg ligible. Look for sunscreens that have broad-spectrum protection, meaning they' ll block both UVA and UVB rays."
HER TRICK TO A FAUX
SUN-KISSED GLOW "I f ind that a nice cream blush-l'm
obsessed with the organic Kjaer We is blush-can give
a really healthy glow without help from harmful sun rays. I prefer a cream to a powder blush, which can sometimes
. ' give a du ll, flat look."
WHERE YOU SHOULD
BE APPLYING SPF (BUT
PROBABLY AREN'T) "The area around the eyes is one of the first to show signs of aging, but many people don't use an eye cream w ith
an SPF. That delicate skin should be protected from the sun every day."
HOW SHE LOOKS CHIC AT THE BEACH "I'm typical ly in and out of the water, so I don't wear a lot of makeup, aside from a light concealer under my eyes-a favorite is RMS Beauty UnCover-Up. Then I top it off with a fun, big hat and sung lasses!"

New York , NY (Spring 2012)- "There 's nothing like quite like a short scrotum ... It's breathtaking .. . T suggest you try it!" says, Mike Myers as Dr. Evil in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.
Strip Ministry of Waxing launches the newest trend in men's grooming! "Upsize in 40 Minutes," a waxing technique to STRIP men of their wooly mammoth's parts. Strip prides itself on its trademark on "hygiene, speed, and quality" or "HSQ". Making men feel both confident and comfortable while they get their unmentionables groomed.
When the Brazi lian revolution hit America, women stormed out to their nearest salon to get waxed. Now men are joining the hairless movement and getting their bodies professionally groomed- even down there.
So why remove or reduce the pubic hair? Men are getting an ego boost from it because removing the hair around the shaft creates an illusion of a longer you-know-what. ·
Strip Ministry of Waxing was founded by global entrepreneur and style maven Cynthia Chua, STRIP melds the essence of Brazilian waxing techniques with speed, efficiency and quality that Singaporeans demand plus the1 hygienic practices that she and her clients expect. She then took her STRlP concept one step further by injecting the stores with a design sense of modern wit and pop culture style- one that is uniquely STRIP.

SUAVE AND SOPHISTICATED Entrepreneur Moe Kittaneh talks style in and out of the workplace

Stylish and tailored describe the fash
ionable look one would see CEO and
entrepreneur Moe Kittaneh sporting on
any given day. "I prefer a more tailored ,
modern European look when it comes to
professional clothing;' Kittaneh says.
At the helm of two Scottsdale-based
companies, as the CEO and founder
of SVELTA Tan (www.sveltatan.com)
and CFO and co-founder of Amerisleep
(www.amerisleep.com), Kittaneh also says
r · he stays at the forefront of patterns, col
ors and textures. While you 're not likely to
find him dressed in a full suit at the office
unless he has an important meeting, he's
always wearing nice dress pants and
shirts from designers like Hugo Boss and
Ben Sherman, high-quality shoes such as
Chelsea boots, and accessories including
stylish belts, rings and watches.
Outside of the office, Kittaneh finds
himself dressing a bit more adventurous.
"I do more colors, flashier jewelry and mix
designer pieces with metro-style looks:'
The entrepreneur's closet is also
filled.with a large cologne collection, as
he finds himself constantly changing up
his fragrance selection. "I am pretty selec
tive about my signature scents. Having 1 several options to choose from is a must
to suit a particular mood or outfit:'
Who are some of your fashion inspirations? It changes quite a bit to
be honest. The show "Suits" always has
cutting-edge looks from top designers like
Tom Ford, and I think people like David
Beckham and Bradley Cooper have an
interesting sense of style as well. Do you try to style yourself after any famous men? I draw inspiration from a lot of
places and my own sense of style; I don't
necessarily have a particular style icon.
Sometimes I'll see interesting looks in
men's magazines, runways, social media
or even on the street that inspire me to
try something new. What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs? To
always be passionate and excited about
your work, or find a way to get excited
about what you already do. It 's passion
that will really motivate you to succeed
and find your way.
