C o n t e n t s

Dear Colleague:

ASHP is constantly working to bring you a world of opportunity

and offer you the tools to be the best pharmacist you can be.

We dedicate ourselves to providing health-system pharmacists

and pharmacy technicians with accurate, accessible, and up-to-

date information on compliance and regulatory issues, clinical and

therapeutic updates, drug information, and practice management.

The theme for the 2009 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting is

Guiding Change, emphasizing the importance of the pharmacist’s

role as a leader in the ever changing health care environment. You

may notice some changes this year related to the look of the ASHP

2010 Products and Services Catalog. While we have “gone green”

at our meetings and no longer provide paper hand outs, the printed

catalog is still a valued resource we are proud to offer. This year’s

catalog was printed on 100% recycled paper, as ASHP continues

its commitment to the environment. You can also view our catalog

virtually at any time by browsing it on our website, at www.ashp.

org/bookstore. Other new features include additional savings for

products frequently purchased together, and expanded resources

for students and faculty.

In our continued work to make our resources the most suitable to

meet your needs, you may notice there is a new look to the ASHP

Bookstore on www.ashp.org. New features include: an enhanced

and more streamlined home page, an extensive help and support

section, instructor resources and an exam copy request form, and

sample chapters for you to preview the products before purchasing.

You may also notice some of our products when searching within

Google books. This is just one more way we are making ASHP

resources more accessible to all health professionals, but especially

health-system pharmacists.

You will find many new products and

new editions throughout the catalog.

Brand new, first-of-a-kind titles

include: Women’s Health Across the

Lifespan: A Pharmacotherapeutic

Approach; Demystifying Opioid

Conversion Calculations: A Guide for

Effective Dosing; and Diseases, Complications,

and Drug Therapy in Obstetrics: A Guide for Clinicians. New editions

this year of tried and trusted publications include: Drug Induced

Diseases, 2nd Edition; and Concepts in Clinical Pharmacokinetics,

5th Edition. Look out for more new best seller editions later in

Spring 2010, such as: Assuring Continuous Compliance with Joint

Commission Standards, 8th Edition; Pediatric Injectable Drugs

(Teddy Bear Book), 9th Edition, the Manual of Pharmacy Technicians,

4th Edition; and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Review and

Practice Exam, 3rd Edition.

ASHP is a leader in providing clinical pharmacy publications, soft-

ware, training materials and other products. I know these products

will provide valuable benefits throughout your career and beyond.

P.S. Be sure to follow us on Twitter for updates and special discounts

throughout the year at ASHPPubs.

Sincerely,

Henri R. Manasse, Jr., Ph.D., Sc.D., FFIP

Pharmacist’s guide to Evidence-based Medicine for clinical decision MakingPatrick J. Bryant, Pharm.D. and Heather A. Pace, Pharm.D.

Pharmacists who make clinical decisions based on experience alone often overestimate the efficacy and underestimate the safety risks of drugs. This leads to variations in services and treatment that result in inappropriate care, lack of care, and increased health care costs.

evidence-based medicine (eBM) uses the scientific method as the key source of knowledge for making clinical decisions. This easy-to-use guide provides a practical approach for applying eBM principles in daily practice. This straightforward process allows pharmacists to make firm decisions and recommendations based on results of rigorously conducted clinical trials, while incorporating their own clinical judgment.

Fundamentals of geriatric Pharmacotherapy: An Evidence-based ApproachLisa C. Hutchinson, Pharm.D., MPH, FCCP, BCPS and Rebecca Sleeper-Irons, Pharm.D., FASCP, BCPS

The number of seniors in the u.S. is expected to double by the year 2030. Currently, the elderly account for 12.7% of the u.S. population, but consume 34% of the total prescriptions—and these numbers are sure to increase enormously over the next few decades. Pharmacists will be greatly affected by this rapidly expanding geriatric population, and they will certainly be called on to offer much-needed expertise. This new textbook provides thorough coverage on therapeutic and social issues affecting elderly patients. The book is divided into two sections; the first section addresses general concepts about aging and the second section is organized by both organ system and disease states common in the elderly. These chapters contain a short summary of treatment in normal adults, and then focus on an evidence-based review of treatment in elderly patients.
