President’s Message

Welcome back!

It is excing that our program year is upon us. Our clambake meeng will be Monday, September 8th at 5:00 pm at the Burgundy

Basin Inn Topic: RIT Golisano Instute for Sustainability (GIS) building: Green design and the unique energy components that

went into this building. Presenters will be Brian Danker, PE, LEED, AP, BD+C, Associate, Electrical Engineer at M/E Engineering PC,

and Mark Maddalina, AIA, LEED, AP, BD+C, Senior Associate, Sustainable Design Director at SWBR Architects.

The Rochester Chapter officers and commi5ee chairs a5ended a planning meeng on July 23rd for the purposes of preparing for

our chapter meeng calendar Sept – May. Our slate of meengs for the 2014- 2015 chapter year is nearly complete; thanks to

Rochester Chapter President Elect and program chair Chrisne Walter. Chrisne’s efforts in the selecon of speakers and pro-

grams promises for excellent program content for the coming year.

I and members of the Rochester Chapter by the me this is published will have a5ended the Chapter Regional Conference or CRC

in Tarrytown, NY August 14th – 17th. I am sure there will be pernent content to report back next moth from the CRC regarding

changes and on goings at the Regional and Society levels in ASHRAE.

In July at ASHRAE’s 2014 Annual Conference in Sea5le, Wash. Tom Phoenix 2014–15 ASHRAE Society President announced a

merger between ASHRAE and the Indoor Air Quality Associaon (IAQA). The combining of organizaons join forces, and com-

bines resources to improve indoor air quality in the building environment. “This merger is beneficial to both ASHRAE and IAQA in

that it strengthens the programs and services of both organizaons,” Tom Phoenix, ASHRAE president, said. “The work of IAQA

complements the work of ASHRAE in its standards, research, publicaons and educaonal offerings. We now combine our re-

sources to ensure the industry receives the best indoor air quality technical guidance and educaonal programs possible, which

means improved indoor air quality for the world around us.” “This merger allows IAQA to maintain its own brand while also

providing its members with enhanced benefits and services,” Kent Rawhouser, president of IAQA, said. “Our strong history of

programs and products is expected to not only connue, but to grow as the merger allows us to take advantage of the resources

and programs overseen by ASHRAE. Members of IAQA and ASHRAE will work collaboravely to strengthen indoor air quality

programs for the industry, and most importantly, for the people who occupy homes and buildings around the world.” ASHRAE

and IAQA programs will be aligned to create high-impact resources for building professionals around the globe.

“Indoor air quality is vitally important to the health and welfare of people worldwide,” Phoenix said. “Air quality systems must

work harmoniously with other systems in homes and buildings to ensure a healthy and sustainable built environment.”

I have included a brief narrave – which describes who we are “ASHRAE” as a society in general, I am oLen asked the queson

what is ASHRAE? ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for

the built environment. The Society and its more than 50,000 members worldwide focus on building systems, energy efficiency,

indoor air quality, refrigeraon and sustainability. Through research, standards wring, publishing, cerficaon and connuing

educaon, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s built environment today. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy

efficiency, indoor air quality and sustainability within the industry. ASHRAE's areas of experse include:

• Energy efficiency

• High performance building

• indoor air quality

• green building design

• building codes and standards

• data center air condioning and venlaon

• health concerns such as Legionnaire's disease and mold growth

• guidance for a safe environment during extraordinary events

Lynn G. Bellenger Engineering Technology Scholarship

ASHRAE has established a scholarship in memory of Presidential Member Lynn G. Bellenger.

Bellenger served as ASHRAE’s president during 2010-2011 and was ASHRAE’s first woman presi-dent in its 116 year history. Her presidential theme was Modeling a Sustainable World; she was a recog-nized expert in energy management, with a strong focus on the need for energy modeling to help create and refine more efficient buildings. During her time as president, Bellenger promoted sustainable design, which according to her, “ignited a passion in people that is changing the world.” The first ASHRAE Energy Modeling Conference was also held during her presidency.

Bellenger passed away in 2011. To honor her legacy, ASHRAE established the Lynn G. Bellenger Scholarship, which is being used to recognize women in engi-neering. Contributions to help fund the scholarship are being accepted at www.ashrae.org/bellenger.
