PROGRAM: You Can’t Afford Discomfort

While much has been said about saving energy, little is said of the downside if the savings strategy re-duces occupant productivity. The average salary in any office is 100 times greater than the full cost ofheating and cooling that space. Strategies that add to the first, renovation, or operating cost of a spacehave to be weighed against the potential for reduced productivity when calculating the time to payback.

We aren’t doing a very good job, it seems. BOMA continues to report that the #1 reason for tenants notrenewing the lease is “occupant dissatisfaction with the thermal environment”. ASHRAE Standard 55 de-scribes the conditions that will satisfy a majority of the occupants. It is often referenced in code, andmany LEED projects have been awarded a point for compliance, at the design stage, of course.

In practice however, we find that systems don’t operate at design, or even as designed. We will discussthe issues related to maintaining comfortable conditions at all loads, and discuss the benefits of ventila-tion and economizer operations.

HOST: Daniel Int-Hout

Mr. Dan Int-Hout, Chief Engineer, Krueger, is responsible for the presentation of technical data andadvanced application engineering for the Grilles, Registers and Diffusers, as well as the VAV airterminals, produced by Krueger. ASHRAE Research plays a huge rolein all aspects of our builtenvironment. Our homes, offices, schools, hospitals, retail spaces andeven the food we eat are all affectedand hopefully protected by theirHVAC&R system, or lack thereof.Although Abbey and her committeehave left me big shoes to fill, I ampleased to be part of such animportant part of society in servingas the Research Promotion Chair forour Ottawa Valley Chapter.

Our objective for the 2016-2017 RPCampaign is $29,000. Although thisseems like a lot, our chapter history,in particular last year’s stellarfundraising efforts have shown usthis objective is attainable. Nodonation is too small, and all moneyraised goes to ASHRAE ResearchCanada.

The raffle draws for event tickets willcontinue at each program meeting insupport of our 2016-2017 RPCampaign. The Oct 22 Sens v.Lightning tickets graciously donated

by Airtron raised a total of $660! Aspecial thanks to Airtron for donatingthe tickets, and congratulations toCathy Godin of SK Sheet Metalwinner of the tickets. We are alwayslooking for donors that may havesomething to contribute for ourmonthly raffles. Please contact me ifinterested.

As of Sep 30, we have raised $1010towards our campaign goal, approximately 3% of our objective.

Thanks to all our donors who helpedmake last year’s 2015-2016 RPCampaign a huge success. Formaldonor recognition will take place atthe November program meeting.

A list of current 2016-2017 RPCampaign donors will be updated foreach monthly newsletter, so donatequickly to see you name appear!

ASHRAE’s Technical Program raisesthe stakes in addressing thechallenges faced today and in thefuture by industry professionals. Viaeight tracks, the program attemptsto bridge the gap between the designdecisions made today that will impactthe future. New tracks that addresschanges in technology include Water-Energy Nexus, Advances in MissionCritical Design and Operation,Climate Change and Its Effects onHVAC&R Design and Technologies, and Energy Efficiency IndustrialBuildings and Life Safety. The fullprogram will be available later thismonth.

Twenty Professional DevelopmentSeminars and Short courses areoffered by the ASHRAE LearningInstitute. New courses includeCogeneration from the Basicsthrough Construction and Operation,Complying with Standard 90.1-2016,Complying with the Requirements ofStandard 62.1-2016, New ASHRAE-Classified Refrigerants to MeetSociety’s Changing Needs, VariableRefrigerant Flow System Design andApplication, Complying withStandard 90.1-2016 Appendix G, andDesign of Affordable and EfficientGround Source Heat Pumps.

Additionally, ASHRAE is offering twoadministrations of its six certificationprogram exams, including its newBuilding Commissioning Professional(BCxP) certification developed withthe goal of achieving U.S.Department of Energy (DOE)recognition by summer 2017. Theother certifications are the ANSI-accredited Building EnergyAssessment Professional (BEAP),Building Energy ModelingProfessional (BEMP) and High-Performance Building DesignProfessional (HBDP) as well as theHealthcare Facility DesignProfessional (HFDP), and Operations& Performance ManagementProfessional (OPMP).

The keynote speaker at the openingPlenary Session is Adam Steltzner, team lead and chief engineer forNASA’s Mars Rover, Curiosity. For 10years, Steltzner led a team ofengineers inventing, designing andtesting the revolutionary “sky crane”landing system that successfullyplaced the over on the Martiansurface in 2012. Five times heavierthan its predecessors, Curiosityrequired an entirely new landingsystem for the 7-minute phase whenthe one-ton rover—entering Martianatmosphere at 13,000 mph—must

stop fully on the surface. To inspireattendees, Steltzner discusses thepower of human curiosity and theimportance of fostering a culture ofcollaborative innovation.

Data Center Standard PublishedBy ASHRAE

ATLANTA – A newly publishedenergy standard for data centersfeatures a performance basedapproach that is more flexible andaccommodating of innovativechanges that rapidly occur in design, construction and operations in thatindustry.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 90.4-2016,Energy Standard for Data Centers, establishes the minimum energyefficiency requirements of datacenters for design and construction, for creation of a plan for operationand maintenance and for utilizationof on-site or off-site renewableenergy resources.

“We worked very hard to craft thisstandard in a manner that does notstifle innovation in the data centerindustry while simultaneouslyoffering criteria to help ensureenergy savings,” Ron Jarnagin, chairof the 90.4 committee, said. “It isimportant to keep in mind that datacenters are mission critical facilitieswhere risk management is theprimary concern.”

Jarnagin noted that high plug loadsand rapidly advancing IT technologymake data center applicationssignificantly different from theircommercial building counterparts.

Standard 90.4 specifically addressesthe unique energy requirements ofdata centers.

Standard 90.4 is a performance-based design standard that offers thedesign components for mechanicalload (MLC) and electrical loss (ELC).Calculations of the MLC and ELC aremade and then compared to themaximum allowable values shown inthe standard based on climate zones.Compliance with Standard 90.4 isachieved when the calculated valuesdo not exceed the values containedin the standard. An alternativecompliance path is provided thatallows tradeoffs between the MLCand ELC.

“The committee initially pursued aGreen Grid power use effectiveness-like (PUE) process for setting thecriteria in the standard but the GreenGrid’s PUE metric is actually based onmeasured energy use data ratherthan design criteria calculations,”Jarnagin said. “We realized that the

design calculations contained inStandard 90.4 would not likely matchup with the actual energy use data sothis approach was amended. We feelthat we’ve recommended therequirements for 90.4 based on ajustifiable 80/20 rule where only thelower performing systems will beaffected.”

The Standards Committee, which hasoversight of all ASHRAE standards, will work together with the chairs ofStandard 90.4 and ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1, Energy Standardfor Buildings Except Low-RiseResidential Buildings, to remove datacenters from Standard 90.1.Standard 90.4 already refers users toStandard 90.1 for requirements onlighting, service water heating andthe building envelope.

Other requirements in Standard 90.4include:

• A sample compliance checklist• Diagrams to illustrate compliance

• Sample calculations

Jarnagin noted that industry input isvital as the standard moves forward. The standard now is under acontinuous maintenance process thatallows changes to the standard to bemade on a continuous basis throughthe mechanism of addenda to thestandard. This process will allow forfrequent changes to the standard asneeded to keep pace with the rapidlychanging technologies in theindustry, he said.
