PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
One of the inevitable things that happens to all parents at some stage is that we will call you to say that your son is sick or has sustained an injury. If my experience as a parent is any guide, your son will probably choose a really inconvenient me to injure himself! While we understand how difficult it can be to leave work to collect your son, could we please ask that you do come to collect him. Even though we have moved and upgraded our sick bay facili es this year the school is not equipped to provide ongoing medical treatment. If you are unable to collect your son we are happy to contact one of the emergency contacts you provided to us at enrolment. We cannot allow sick or injured boys to travel home or to treatment alone, even if they are in the senior years. This is a safety precau on aimed at pro-tec ng your son. We appreciate your coopera on and understanding.

SOLEMN TRIBUTE TO THE ANZACS
YEAR 10 Elec ve History staged a very moving assembly last Friday, 24th April. Spearheaded by the efforts of Murali Chinnappa, the boys spent a great deal of me late last term researching the experiences of the ANZACS at that momentous landing at Gallipoli 100 years ago.
The assembly opened with a moving acknowledgement to country by Jackson Plumb and then the two MCs, Cody Jaikiew and Ihsan Bagci took control of the assembly and transferred the assembly back one hundred years.
A re enactment of the Coo - ee March then arrived with much noise and fanfare through the back of the hall and was followed by a recruitment speech by Jared Lyons. The recruits then happily le the hall for the adventure of war.
The reality of the campaign then set in. The assembly was then asked to imagine their presence in the cold pre dawn as the troops waited to land. Sounds of lapping water, nervous coughs, opening of bo les and prepara on of rifles could then be heard in the darkened hall before the silence was sha ered with a rising sun and then a graphic piece of video that captured the impossibility of the landing.
The boys then took the assembly through the sha ering sta s cs that accompanied the campaign. Again the assembly was asked to imagine that if this whole assembly was recruited for the campaign to consider their chances of survival. To answer the ques on 35 boys then silently stood and bowed their heads represen ng the propor on who would never set foot on Australian soil again.
As the poem 'On Flanders Fields' was read, a propor on of the once enthusias c recruits then returned to the assembly, wounded and bandaged and then made their way to back of the assembly.
The Ode was then read, followed by the Last Post, the Revelle and the Na onal Anthem. The reading of a hymn accompanied the official party leaving the assembly to lay the wreath.
In all, the ANZAC ceremony presenta on involved over sixty students.

NAPLAN Equa ng Study ‐ Thursday 7th May 2015
As you are aware, NAPLAN tests are administered to Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students in May each year.
You may not be aware that each year a sample of students in these same year levels, from across
Australia, are also required to sit the NAPLAN Equa ng Study.
Equa ng is a process carried out to enable the results of tests completed year to year to be
reported on the same assessment scales. For NAPLAN, a representa ve na onal sample of students
is selected annually to par cipate in this addi onal equa ng phase or equa ng study so that
NAPLAN test results can be compared over me.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Repor ng Authority (ACARA) manages the NAPLAN
Equa ng Study, and the assessment contractor is the Australian Council for Educa onal Research
(ACER). ACER is responsible for all aspects of the administra on of the equa ng tests in each of
the four domains of reading, language conven ons, numeracy and wri ng.
Students from Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 will complete a paper-based assessment, similar to a regular
NAPLAN test, in one of the four domains: reading, language conven ons, numeracy and wri ng.
Your school is one in the sample of schools selected this year from all states and territories to
par cipate in the Equa ng Study, which will be conducted from 27 April to 8 May 2015. In your
school the assessment will involve 7K and a mixture of students from across Year 9.
Approximately 25 students from each year level have been randomly selected from one or more
classes to complete this assessment. The students involved in this Equa ng study have been no -
fied of their involvement.
Ashfield Boys High School has been selected to par cipate in the NAPLAN Equa ng Test on
Thursday 7th May 2015. Our school will be comple ng the NUMERACY – Non calculator (50 mins)
and the NUMERACY – Calculator (50 mins) test on the day. Students will need to bring a calculator
and 2B or HB pencil.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the school and speak to Ms Henry.

ASHFIELD BOYS HAVE COMMUNITY SPIRIT
Heather Gorton – Community Liaison Officer at ABHS –
does it again!! - Year 10 boys exemplify the essence of
community spirit with their willingness to help the elderly
live their lives independently by joining with them to shop
at Ashfield Mall. This is the third year ABHS has joined
with Inner West Neighbour Aid Community Support. The
boys choose to help the elderly with shopping and
packing of the organised van, so that these women can
con nue to live in their own homes. The women look
forward to Wednesdays as they get to chat and feel
included in our school community. They have nicknamed
the project "Shopping with Schoolies".
The feedback was that the Ashfield Boys High School students were “impressive, well-mannered and very
lovely. You, the school and their families should be so proud. It is a pleasure to work with you and the
students on this program." - Allison Yee-Brogan (General Manager)
