Greetings From
OCA-Westchester & Hudson Valley
Dear Friends and Supporters of Asian Heritage Festival,
Welcome to our 18th Annual Asian-American Heritage Festival. This
Festival is held to celebrate the proud heritage of Asian culture. OCA-WHV
is honored to bring together our large and ever expanding communities
comprising of multi-ethnic Asians who choose to live and work in
Westchester County.
The anniversaries are of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in
America on May 7, 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad
(by many Chinese laborers) on May 10, 1869. In 1990 Congress voted to
expand it from a week to a month long celebration and in May 1992, the
month of May was permanently designated as Asian/Pacific American
Heritage Month.
Today you will be entertained by our many dance performances, singing
groups, acrobatic shows and exercise sequences. As you walk through
Kensico Dam Plaza, you can experience the food and visit our many vendors
who have special offers and programs for all attendees.
OCA-WHV, one of over 100 chapters and affiliates of OCA, a national
organization dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-
being of 17.3 million Asian Pacific Americans in the United States, is proud
to host this event for the 18th consecutive year, with support from
Westchester County, the Westchester Parks Department, and Arts
Westchester.
We hope you enjoy your time at our festival as much as we have enjoyed
bringing it to you. Our thanks and appreciation goes to our sponsors, County
Executive, Robert P. Astorino, our county legislators, and to the many county
park employees who have made this day possible. Finally, kudos directed to
our members and supporters who have worked tirelessly to insure its success.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Gary Guo
President, OCA-Westchester & Hudson Valley

What is OCA?
Founded in 1973, OCA is a national non-profit, non-partisan advocacy
and educational organization of concerned Asian Americans. OCA is dedicated
to securing the rights of all Asian Pacific Americans in the United States. And it
aims to embrace the hopes and aspirations of over twelve and a half million
Asian Pacific Americans.
OCA’s primary objectives include promoting active participation of our
members in both civic and national matters, securing social justice, equal
opportunity and equal treatment, eliminating prejudices, stereotypes and
ignorance, and promoting our cultural heritage.
To achieve these objectives, OCA is engaged in organizing its more than
100 chapters and affiliates nationwide to develop both leadership and community
involvement. The chapters and the college affiliates are establishing strong local
programs in all parts of the country.
OCA’s base in Washington, D.C. gives the national office an effective
vantage point of monitoring legislation and policy issues affecting Asian
Americans. In the D.C. metro area, OCA is able to build national support and to
work in coalition with other national groups around issues affecting Asian
Americans. In addition, OCA publishes IMAGE magazine, which serves as a
communications link between chapter members as well as an information source
on federal and legislative initiatives and policies relevant to the Asian Pacific
American communities.
Our YOCAA youth group consists of high school students from lower and
upper Westchester and Hudson Valley region high schools. It is an organization
for young Asian American students to network beyond their own schools,
develop leadership skills, learn about their Asian culture and heritage, and to
have fun. Activities include visiting local corporations to learn about different
career opportunities, having fundraising events to support YOCAA activities as
well as performing community service. YOCAA has members from several high
schools in the region. Also, YOCAA members are invaluable volunteers at
various OCA-WHV events.
