On behalf of the Board, I would like to wish all of you and all your family members a VERY HAPPY BIJAYA DASHAMI on the auspicious occasion of Dashain! I also take this opportunity of wishing all of you in advance a very HAPPY AND MEMORABLE TIHAR, NEPAL SAMBAT 1140 and Chhath. Since Dashain celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, after nine days of epic battle, let us all pray that Goddess Durga gives every one of us strength to conquer evil, which is slowly destroying our beautiful country.

and, in the process, students get the opportunity to learn about the rigors of academic discipline and academic excellence. This will in turn produce graduates who believe in “meritocracy” and not “mobocracy”. AITM has always been committed to this objective.

AITM has recently taken a new and strong partner, equally committed to academic excellence. AITM stands at a very critical juncture as it strives to offer new and exciting international programs. We are most hopeful that we will be able to offer some very exciting international programs in the near future. It is a pity to see so many good students, almost 100,000, going abroad annually in pursuit of higher studies. PBL South Asia: AITM Faculties Participated in Faculty Training Workshop Held in Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.

A faculty training workshop of “Problem Based Learning in South Asian Universities” project was organized in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai from August 19 to 30, 2019. As a beneficiary partner institution of the project, five faculty members of AITM from different departments participated in the training workshop. Among them were Ms. Lena Sthapit, Dr. Rabindra Raj Giri, Mr. Pravakar Pradhan, Mr. Prakash Dulal and Mr. Samulson Neupane. Faculties from other partner higher education institutions (HEIs) in Nepal and Bhutan, and senior master course students as well as faculty members from other partner institutions in Europe and India were other participants of the workshop. In total, seventy people from all the partner HEIs participated in the training workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to expose the faculty members to problem-based learning methodology with real and practical cases, gain the first-hand experience on PBL methodology and prepare the background for PBL implementation in their respective HEIs.

Workshop inauguration, introduction of the participants and formation of multidisciplinary teams for participants’ cases were completed on the first day. The faculties from Nepalese and Bhutanese HEIs were new to the PBL process while the participants from Technical University Delft, Aalto University, Kaunas University of Technology, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore were familiar with the process. The possible themes of the Mumbai student/faculty cases were floated to all the HEIs prior to the Mumbai event, the participants were asked to provide their preferences to work on the themes and the teams were formed based on the provided preferences. The team composition was such that no two participants from the same HEI were in the same team and the participants from European and Indian HEIs were evenly distributed to all the teams. Altogether six teams were formed with six to seven participants in each team. Also, one mentor/facilitator was assigned to each team.

The participants were taken to preliminary visits of different field sites on the second day depending on their cases. The teams got familiar with their cases, observed their fields and collected background information in the first field visits. The third day, which was fully packed with PBL

sessions (e.g., PBL overview, PBL cases from students’ perspective, design thinking, design for sustainability), was the strategizing day of the workshop after the preliminary field visits. The teams were taken to their respective fields on the fourth day again. In the second field visits, the teams penetrated more deeply to their cases, collected more information, validated their assumptions and narrowed down their working area. But, the project management team (PMT) members from the participating HEIs conducted series of meetings separately to discuss on the ongoing activities and plan for future activities of the project. The fifth day was the reflection and documentation day. The teams reflected on their works, the directions they were taking and sufficiency of the data/information collected so far on the fifth day (the last day of the first week).

The weekend (Saturday and Sunday) were free for all the participants and they toured around the Mumbai and some of them went out of Mumbai according to their preferences. The workshop resumed from Monday again. Mainly three activities were conducted in parallel on Monday and Tuesday of the second week. The PMT members were fully engaged in meetings, some of the case teams went to their fields again depending on their needs and others worked on their cases and validated their data. On Tuesday evening, an informal reflection session of the participants with light snacks and drinks was organized on the open space of the IIT Mumbai guest house. Each of the six participating teams updated status of their cases and the participants in groups representing individual countries delivered cultural presentations to introduce their countries among

the participants in the reflection session. On Wednesday, the student/faculty teams compiled their works for presentations (PowerPoint as well as poster) while the PMT members were engaged in a working session to plan for the next PBL activities in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. In the meantime, the project coordinator Ms. Riina Subra talked to the participants of all the HEIs separately to get feedback on the ongoing workshop and planning the next PBL South Asia event in Bangalore. Thursday of the second week was the presentation day. The project advisory committee (PAC) meeting and a workshop session for PMT members were conducted in the first half of the day while the faculty/student teams finalized their presentations. Then, all the six teams presented their cases followed by questions, answers and discussion session in the second

half of the day. Later in the evening, poster presentation and certificate distribution sessions were organized on the terrace of Civil Engineering Department of IIT Mumbai followed by dinner. Friday was the final day of the Mumbai event and a feedback session was organized in the Civil Engineering Department seminar hall of IIT Mumbai in the first half of the day. The participants filled up online feedback forms and also provided their reflections on the Mumbai event. This concluded the faculty training workshop in IIT Mumbai and the participants departed to their home countries.

This was the first experience for all of us to work as students in a multidisciplinary, multilingual and multicultural team, which was challenging (wide gaps in understanding, thinking style and working approach) and confusing in the beginning, but it was very rewarding at the end. The faculties had a good level of understanding of problem based learning pedagogy, developed soft skills like team work, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, presentation etc. and gained more confidence in integrating PBL pedagogy in Engineering education in Nepal from the IIT Mumbai training workshop. In summary, the IIT Mumbai faculty training workshop was a milestone for paradigm shift in teaching/learning pedagogy particularly in Engineering education in Nepal.
