Pastor Sue’s Newsletter Article September 2019
Here are some of my random ponderings:
As I write this, leaves are already turning colors on trees, back-to-school sales
are nearly over, college students have been delivered to their dorms or apart-
ments, and Halloween is in every store, with a smattering of Thanksgiving and
Christmas also to be found. We are at the cusp of Autumn and many of us
wonder, “Where did the summer go?”
How was your summer? Was it filled with times of rest? Did you spend time
with family and friends? Did you sense the presence of God when you heard the
birds singing you awake in the morning? Did you see the beauty of God’s crea-
tion as the sun set and the fireflies danced in the approaching darkness? Did
the scent and color of the flowers surprise you as you looked out on the land-
scape surrounding you?
As the days of summer come to an end this month, our minds quickly turn to
our three “high, holy days”: Lutefisk Dinner, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not
too many congregations include Lutefisk, but then again, we’re a unique bunch,
aren’t we!
I’m entering my fifth year as your pastor and I can honestly say that our
Lutefisk dinner is one of the best fellowship events I’ve ever witnessed in my 28
years as a pastor. It is an amazing opportunity for all generations to work to-
gether (and it takes a lot people). You’ll be hearing more from David
Erickson soon.
I’m excited about the ministry of Christ Lutheran Church. Our Stephen
Ministry is beginning, our membership is growing, our handbells are in, and
many projects in and around the building are happening. As I write this, the
parking lot is being resealed and will be re-striped. We have a lot to be
thankful for.
What I am especially thankful for is you. We are church together and I can’t
think of a better place and people to be in partnership with as we Celebrate,
Learn and Care about each other and the people God places in our midst, both
in our church and in our communities.
Day by day, as they spent much time together in the
temple, they broke bread at home and ate their
food with glad and generous hearts, praising God
and having goodwill toward the people. And day by
day the Lord added to their number those who were
being saved. (Acts of the Apostles 2: 46-47)
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Sue Beadle

Holy Humor
One Sunday morning, the preacher noticed little Alex was staring up at the large
plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. It was covered with names, and
small American flags were mounted on either side of it. The seven year old had
been staring at the plaque for some time, so the preacher walked up, stood
beside the little boy, and said quietly, “Good morning, Alex.”
“Good morning, Preacher,” replied the young boy, still focused on the plaque.
“Preacher, what is this?” “Well, son, it’s a Memorial to all the young men and
women who died in the service.”
Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Alex’s voice was
barely audible, trembling with fear, when he asked, “Which service, the 8:00 or the 10:30?”
Women’s Bible Study Women’s Bible Study will resume
meeting on Tuesday mornings at 9am
in the Friendship Room starting
September 10, 2019.
Please join us!!

Dine to Donate Looking for a good reason to go out to dinner?
How about having Texas Roadhouse donate 10%
of your bill back to the church. Dine with
Texas Roadhouse, 4841 Annamark Drive,
Madison, on Sundays from 11am to 9pm
(available every Sunday, every week) and they
will do just that. Show your server your
bulletin from that Sunday morning to receive
the donation. Let’s eat!!
Confirmation for
7th and 8th
Graders will begin
Wednesday,
September 4, 6-7pm
Please contact the church office if
you have a 7th or 8th grader and you
did not get a letter in the mail.
Thank you!
Nora is looking for some help—if
you can bring goodies to enjoy
during fellowship time after each
service, please sign up for a Sunday
on the board in the Friendship
Room. Thank you!
Let’s Make Pillowcases! Join us on Sunday, October 13, 2019, to make
pillowcases for Ryan’s Case for Smiles. The
pillowcases will go to UW Children’s Hospital
to be given to children battling cancer. We
will begin after the second service at
11:30am with a lunch and work until about
4pm. You do not need to know how to sew to
help. There will be cutting, pinning and
ironing to do in addition to the sewing. Feel
free to bring a friend. Confirmation kids will
get community service hours for helping.
Please sign up on the bulletin board. Any
questions, call Pam Hamele at 846-2553.

Thank you!! August 30 ends another successful year
of feeding children in our
community. We would like to thank
you for your generous donations of
food and cash to Norski Nibbles and
thank the volunteers for their time in
distributing the lunches.
With your support, we were able to distribute approximately 4,000
lunches this summer. We look forward to your continued support in the
coming years. You truly help make a difference in the lives of many of
your neighbors. Also, a big thank you to Bob Mathweg and Dave LaHaye,
our coordinators, for their many hours of service.
Grace Meals September is our month to serve the Grace meal.
Please sign up on the bulletin board to help
serve or bring food. If you are unable to help
serve or bring food but would still like to con-
tribute, you can make a donation to the Grace
Meals program, just indicate “Grace Meal” on
your check. Thank you to Tim Paulson, Jean
Kolowrat and Kathy Paulson for heading up this
important program.
Adult Education Adult Education will be resuming on Sunday,
September 15, at 9:20 in the conference room on the
2nd floor. You will be taking a “Drive Thru History”
with your host Dave Stotts as he speeds through the
ancient world of the Bible. This will be a fast-paced
and even humorous encounter with the people,
places, and events that have shaped our world and
the Christian faith. First stop, Egypt, Lachish and
Beersheba. Please mark your calendar and join in
the fun.

LET’S HAVE A BAZAAR!! It’s time to think about Bazaar 2019!
For new members, the Christ Lutheran Church Women hold a Bake Sale and Raffle in
the Friendship Room in conjunction with the Lutefisk Dinner. Some members create
a variety of yummy treats for the Bake Sale, such as traditional Norwegian treats,
brownies, cookies, bars, pastries, breads and canned items, such as jams, jellies,
horseradish, relishes, beet pickles, etc.
Other members with different skills and talents create items
for the raffle portion of the Bazaar. The sky is the lim-
it! Examples of items raffled in past years are paintings, carv-
ings, table runners, floral arrangements, wood working, home-
made cards, quilts and jewelry, just to name a few. Other
members have opted to donate gift cards for movies, food or
gasoline.
Money generated over the years from the Bazaar has been
used for a wide variety of things both within our walls and
throughout the community. The 2018 profits went to DAIS,
ELCA Synod, DeForest/Windsor Food Pantry, Gilda’s Club, The
Beacon and UW Campus Ministry.
So start thinking about your talent and what you can
contribute. Any questions can be directed to Vicki Sobczak, Bazaar Chair, at
846-2920 or email: [email protected]
We will be showcasing the hard work
of our quilters on:
Sunday, September 8th
8:00 &10:30
We would like to acknowledge the
group of quilters in our congregation
that meet each month to make quilts. They are: Cathy Nelson, Janice
Fritz, Rose Kirkeng, Nelda Noltemeyer, Connie Nelson, Caroline Saley, Jen
Lange, Tina Standish, Rose Haney, Monnie Von Behren, and Pam
Hamele. They have lovingly created 110 quilts.
The quilts will then be packed up on Saturday, September 14th, and
shipped off to people all over the world in need of comfort and
warmth. Also some of the quilts will be raffled off during the bazaar in
November, and given to the DeForest Area Needs Network and the
DeForest Senior Center in December.
8
Blood Drive Christ Lutheran Church will be hosting a
blood drive Monday, December 2nd
from
1-5:30 for the American Red Cross. It will be
open to the public so feel free to help spread the
word. Once we get closer, we will be asking for food
donations and help. If you have any questions or
want to volunteer, please contact Tracy Paulson at
608-279-9650 or [email protected]. Thank you!
Soap Needed The Social Ministries Committee would like to ask for your help in
gathering soap for Lutheran World Relief. LWR accepts new bars of any
brand soap, in their original wrapping. All bar sizes are
accepted; however, bath-size bars are highly preferred.
These bars of soap will give families around the world an
essential, as well as a reminder that they are not alone.
There will be a box in the Friendship Room until
September 13th where you can donate the soap.
Thank you!!
Abundant Harvest
The Abundant Harvest table is back! Gardeners,
if you have extra bounty to share, please pay it
forward and place your extra goodies on the
table just outside of the Friendship Room. If you
would like to take the extra veggies, there is a
container for donations.
Christ Lutheran Church is excited to participate in
the Koats for Kids 2019 program! This year’s
collection drive will be held Sunday, September 9th
–Monday, October 5th
t. If you have any gently-used
winter coats, non-leather hats, scarves and
mittens (pinned in pairs please) that you would
like to donate, there will be a box in the
Friendship Room. Klinke Cleaners will clean all
items, then hand them off to the Community
Action Coalition for distribution in late
October. All sizes are in demand, but there is a particular need for infant and toddler
sizes, as well as larger teen sizes (12-22) and larger adult sizes (L-3XL). Please
consider going through your closets to check for coats you no longer use and can
donate to area residents who are in need.
9
We Need Your Help Every month we need at least 24 volunteers
to greet, read and meet visitors at our Sunday
morning services. It’s easy to do and it’s fun,
and yet we struggle to fill those positions
each month. If you are interested, please
sign up on the bulletin board outside of the
Friendship Room. You can choose to greet,
read and/or meet visitors after each service.
You can also choose which service you would
like to volunteer at.
If you have an email address, you will be added to the SignUp.com list
and you will receive emails to signup. If you don’t have email, we will
gladly give you a call each month and help you select a date and time.
Feel free to call the office if you have any questions. Please consider
volunteering your smile and a handshake to welcome our visitors and
members each Sunday.
We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to those of you who already
volunteer. We are truly grateful for our help!!
HANDBELLS AND
HANDCHIMES!
Our handbells and handchimes were dedicated on Sunday, August 25,
after the Comfy Critter Community Church service. We are very excited to
start incorporating them into Sunday morning services. If you are inter-
ested in joining us, please sign up on the bulletin board outside of the
Friendship Room. We will begin with 8 weeks of ringing to “get our feet
wet.” We will have practices starting Tuesday, September 10, at 6:30pm or
Thursday, September 12 at 10:30am, whichever one works best into your
schedule. There are lots of options and opportunities so please consider
joining us. Contact Bonnie if you have any questions. Thank you!!

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12
“Each one should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others, faithfully ad-
ministering God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10
We are pleased to announce that we have selected seven individuals to train to
serve as our first Stephen Ministers. Christ Lutheran Church affirms their gifts
for this lay caring ministry!
The men and women called to serve are:
Garnet Adams Roger Leonhardt
Beth Erickson Robert Mathweg
Nora Geach Scott Stenberg
Vicky Heimbecker
We thank God for their commitment to serving in this important new ministry.
Training classes began on Monday, August 19 and continue through December
16. A wide variety of topics will be covered during these 20 sessions, ranging
from distinctively Christian care-giving, to the art of listening, dealing with grief
and depression, confidentiality, crisis theory and the practice of identifying
danger vs. opportunity, helping suicidal persons get the help they need, and
much more…
Please take time to pray for those who have accepted God’s call to become Ste-
phen Ministers. Also, please pray for your Stephen Leaders as they teach, and
learn from, the Stephen Minister classes.

ship in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he

“Train children in the way they should go;
even when they are old they, will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6
As summer comes to a close, it’s time to prepare for Sunday School! We would like for you to
join us in teaching God’s word to our children and sharing Bible stories with them. We will
have a few changes to the program format this year that we hope will engage children more in
their learning. Each week will begin with all ages together for the lesson reading, and then we
will break out into groups for a game or craft activity. We will then join all classes together as
usual in the Sanctuary for music and singing.
We will have Rally Sunday upstairs on Sunday, September 8th
for registration, but there will
be no class that day. Classes will begin the following week, Sunday, September 15th
from 9:15
to 10:15. Pick up by parents will be in the Sanctuary, as usual.
We are in need of teachers and classroom helpers. We currently do not have enough staff to
support anticipated enrollment numbers, so please consider sharing your gifts with our
leaders of tomorrow and contact Tawni Stenberg in the church office (846-4718) if you are able
to help!
Thank you!
