Miles of SmilesAs we approach the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of the Beloit Mealson Wheels program, we realize there are many memories of special deliveries… special clients… special volunteers over the years.

We often hear volunteers making comments about how much fun they haddelivering, and we see the attachment that takes place as you get to know thegood folks along your delivery route.

So we are inviting you to take a moment to put pen to paper, if you will, andtell us about a favorite client, or delivery event, so that we might, indeed, reflect upon “Miles of Smiles” at our Anniversary! Send them or bring them tothe office, or e-mail them to us at [email protected].

Royce Revs Up For APenny Drive

Students at Royce Elementaryschool will be waging war onhunger for this year’s “MarchFor Meals” campaign… with aPenny Drive!

The winning class raising thelargest amount will be treated toa custard party compliments ofCulver’s of Beloit!

You “Liked” Us!! As a member of the Beloit Meals On Wheels Board of Directors, Kris Baconcontemplated the possibility of “weaving” together the talents of her localbasket weaver’s guild to benefit the Beloit Meals On Wheels clients. Aftercrafting a pattern to be used, Kris secured a number of her fellow weavers tobegin making “Baskets of Love”, to be distributed to clients during theholidays. The idea was so popular with Beloit Meals On Wheels staff andvolunteers that additional weavers were recruited! Board members joined inby securing an assortment of items to be included such as Kleenex, handsanitizers, Band-Aid containers, mouthwash, letteropeners, highlighters andbookmarks, all generously donated by local businesses! (ABC Supply –Lighted Key Chain; Beloit Health System – Pocket Sized Band Aid;Blackhawk Bank – Letter Opener; First National Bank & Trust co –Paper & Pen; Homecare Pharmacy – Hand Sanitizer & Mouthwash;M&I Bank – Sewing Kit & Highlighter; Walgreen’s – Pocket SizeKleenex; Wisconsin Weaver’s – Baskets and Bookmarks) Members of theBeloit Junior Woman’s Club even designed their holiday greetings cards tospecifically fit in the specially designed baskets! Once the 85 baskets werecompleted, an evening was designated to fill all the baskets , once again byvolunteers… excited at the prospect of brightening a senior’s holiday! Andultimately, some of the original weaver’s guild members accompanied BeloitMeals On Wheels for their special delivery! A great collaborative effort toshare the holiday love!

Then Beloit Meals On Wheels Executive Director, Marcy Berner-Reedysubmitted the project to MOWAA (Meals On Wheels Association ofAmerica) for consideration for a SUBARU “Share The Love” Grant, whichgarnered $500 for the program. Excellent media placement provided byBeloit Daily News and the Stateline Shopper contributed to receiving another$1,000 award, and finally, a myriad of community members visited theMOWAAblog, and “liked” the story to put Beloit Meals On Wheels in 4thplace, resulting in another $500 award.

Throughout the month of March, Beloit Meals on Wheels cordially invites you to help us celebrate

“MARCH FOR MEALS”

What can you do to help ? ? ?Come out and support Meals on Wheels during the month of March at these locations!!

“March for Meals” is an annual event seeking to raise awareness of senior hunger. By raising funds and recruitingvolunteers, Beloit Meals On Wheels can continue assisting seniors who otherwise may not be able to stay in theirhomes. Funds raised will directly assist seniors in the stateline area, lessening the epidemic of “nutritionalinsecurity.” When seniors experience nutritional insecurity, they are often forced to choose between eating andpaying for life’s other necessities, such as prescription drugs or heat. Additionally, these seniors may be unable toshop and/or prepare food due to illness or handicap.
