During a few hours on one of the days, the students were able to practice mock interpreting scenarios where people who can hear came in and various real-world scenarios were set up in different rooms such as parent-teacher conference, insurance agent meeting, and many more. The mock innerspring scenarios and workshops were to help the seniors prepare for their practicum and for interpreting after graduation. -Nora Reade (Class of 2017) SPRING 2017 Immersion Weekend ASL/English Interpreting Alumni Newsletter ASL/English Interpreting Alumni Newsletter Spring’17 ASL/English Interpreting Alumni Newsletter Spring’17

The ASL/English Interpreting major has

had many excellent opportunities over the 2016-

up by IMAGE, SIGNIFY, Interpreting Club, and

the 2017 senior class. The 2017 senior class was

able to interpret with a certified mentor at the 161st

Bloomsburg Fair in September.

The seniors were also able to take a trip to

Gettysburg, PA for Immersion Weekend.

Immersion weekend was set up by two alumna

Maribel Escarfullery and Katie (Noll) Murphy

(both class of 2011) in 2013 and have been offering

it to seniors in the ASL/English Interpreting

program ever since. This is a three-day event in

which there is no speaking, it is an ASL only

experience. There were ASL faculty, Deaf

members from the community, and two certified

interpreters that were present. During a few hours

on one of the days, the students were able to

practice mock interpreting scenarios where people

who can hear came in and various real-world

scenarios were set up in different rooms such as

parent-teacher conference, insurance agent

meeting, and many more. During the weekend,

Deaf presenters gave training seminars. The mock

innerspring scenarios and workshops were to help

the seniors prepare for their practicum and for

Bloomsburg Fair

Mentors Needed!

Every fall, seniors in the Interpreting

program have the chance to work with a

mentor during the annual Bloomsburg

Fair. This is a great chance to start their

interpreting career, and something they’ll

be able to cherish and remember forever!

The Fair will be from September 23rd

through the 30th. Mentors are always

needed! If you are interested in

becoming a mentor, or have any

questions, please feel free to contact

Jessica Bentley-Sassman at

[email protected].

Each semester, Signify hosts Deaf

Awareness Day here on campus.

Students participate in games, get

to mingle with members of the

Deaf community as well as their

friends, and have tons of fun for a

few hours!

Also, alternating with the

Interpreting club each semester,

they hold a Spaghetti Dinner at the

Community Alliance Church.

Keep an eye out for when it will be

held this upcoming fall!

Stakeholder’s Meeting

ASL/English Interpreting

Alumni Newsletter

Spring’17

The second thing that we are asking alumni

to be a part of is a stakeholder’s meeting.

An e-mail was sent out previously about a

stakeholder’s meeting. If you are interested

in being involved in the stakeholder’s

meeting, please feel free to send Dr. Jessica

Bentley-Sassaman an e-mail, at

[email protected]. The stakeholder’s

meeting will take place on June 3, 2017. It

will be held on Bloomsburg University’s

campus. If you cannot make it because you

live at a distance but would like to join in,

we are working on a video conferencing

technology that will allow you to join in on

the meeting, so that way you can participate.

Please feel free to contact Jessica Bentley-

Sassaman for more information. If you sent

an email already expressing interest, you will

be emailed with the flyer. We thank you for

your time and for your support as alumni at

Bloomsburg University and our

ASL/English Interpreting program. We

look forward to becoming an accredited

Program through CCIE.

Hello! Bloomsburg University’s

ASL/English Interpreting program

has some exciting news to share with

you. We are currently going through

the process of becoming accredited

through the CCIE. In order to do

that, we have several things that we

will be asking from our alumni. The

first is, this summer; you will be

receiving an alumni survey. We ask

that you please fill out this survey to

help us with collecting data for

accreditation. It is very important to

us, and we appreciate your time and

willingness in doing so.
