FOREWORDThis Foreword is not part of ASME 816.45-1998)
I n the spring of 1920, the American Engineering Standards Cornmittee (later successivelynamedAmericanStandardsAsso ciation, United States of AmericaStandards nstitute, andAmerican National Standards Institute) authorized the organization of a Sectional Committee(laternamedStandardsCom mittee) on the Standardization ofPipe Flanges for thepurposeof unifying nd urtherdevelop ing the langed nd threaded fitting standard s in force intheUnited States.Designated as jointsponsors were he AmericanSociety of MechanicalEngineers, the Heating andPiping ContractorsNationalAsso ciation later the 'Mecha nicalContractorsAssociation of America),and the ManufacturersStandar dization Society of theValve and Fittingsndustry. In 1982,AmericanNationalStandardsCommittee BI 6 wasreorgani/.ed as the ASME B 1 6 Committee, with ASMEoperating s ole ponso r underproceduresaccredited by ANSI.
Thc Sovent" ystem for plumbingdrainage ystemswasdeveloped in Switzerland, in1961, by Mr. Fritz Sornm er. Patent rights for theUnited States , wh ere the system is indinguse in high rise developments, were obtained i n late 1969. The Manufacturers StandardizationSociety o f the Valve and Fittings Industry developed and approved SP-74 in September1970. A few monthsater, the MSS publicationwas ubmitted to StandardsCommitteeBl6 , whoseSubcommittee9 nowSubcommittee J ) gavepromptapproval to the proposal.AfterStandardsCornmitteeapproval, omedelay was encountered in providing necessaryassurances to A NSI, but approval was finally granted oANSIB16.32-1973,CastCopperAlloy Solderolnt ittings for Sovent@Drainage ystems.Approvalwasubsequentlyreceived for ANSIB16.43-1982,WroughtCopper and Copp er Alloy SolderJointFittingsfor Sovent@DrainageSystems.
In 1982,Subcommittee B was equested to dev elop a standard or ast iron material.Following approval by the BI 6 Main Cornmittee and the ASM E Supervisory Board, approvalwas granted by ANSI for ASME/ANSI B16.45, Cast Iron Fittings for Sovent@DrainageSystems, onMay 13, 987.
In the 1998edition of ASM EB16.45, eferencestandardsareupdated, a qualitysystemprogramannex is added, and severaleditorial evisionsaremade.Followingapproval byAS ME B16 Subcommittee B andB16 MainCommittee,AN SI pproved this AmericanNationalStandard on Novemb er20,1998.All requests f o r interpretations or suggestions for revisions should be sent to the Administra-
