Project description:

The Women in Engineering Program is an annual event, carried on by the ASME Student Section of the University of Guanajuato as part of the ASME Diversity Action Grant. It consists in inviting the female students from all the high schools around our school of engineering to learn about (and to take on) as a major and professional life the engineering field, emphasizing of course the mechanical engineering major of our school. section treasurer Eduardo Monzón, and the ASME student section secretary Sandra Eloisa Chávez. The speeches were related to the majors offered in our campus, answering typical questions that any high school student has about his/her future, and breaking schemes about women in engineering as a whole. After the speeches, a technical visit to the school facilities was conducted in order to show the infrastructure (such as classrooms, laboratories, shops, etc.). Then we prepared fun competitions (a rally) for the attending female students. The rally included activities related to math and logical thinking and easy questioning (as basta), design (such as paper towel), and fun activities (as watermelon eating contest spoon race and balloons with water contest).

Project Goal:

To introduce the different engineering majors as an option for studying and following a professional development that is open to everyone, regardless of gender, age, race, cultural or social behavior. Addressing the concerns about engineering that the students may have about been a woman in engineering. To introduce the Student Section and the ASME International to the future students as an option to develop skills that are not learned in the classrooms.

Evaluation program success: assessment The success of the event will be assessed according to the interest shown by the students during the conferences, the effort made for the competitions and the increase of the admission of women to the engineering majors and to the Student Section in the next admission periods in our school of engineering. The attendance will be as well a critical factor of success, the more attendance, the larger the impact we conveyed to the students.

Other comments: during the event, there were two main contest carried out: i) a Design Contest and ii) a Rally.

Design Contest: working in ten-member teams, the students were provided with the material needed to design and construct a paper tower. The objective was to build the tallest tower; creativity was considered to grade the construction design. Rally: keeping the ten members team, the students participated into a rally with 4 stages. Each stage granted the team with a same amount of points, based on the effort and performance of each of them. The stages and the activities were the following:

Watermelon contest: an easy competition where the winner was the lady who ate a slice of watermelon in the smallest amount of time. The only restriction for the students was that they were not able to use their hands to grab the watermelon slice.

Basta: This was the area of simple questions about everyday life where the team with the most correct answers was the winner of the station

Water balloons: two members of each team must play together to throw and catch a water balloon and get the larger distance without breaking the balloon.

Spoon race: It is an easy competition is to complete the runway carrying a lemon on a spoon the winning team of the station is that achieves complete the circuit in the shortest time possible.
