ASME DIVERSITY ACTIONG GRANT (DAG) REPORT
PROJECT TITLE
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE DAY
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A one-day, intensive camp focusing on Mechanical Engineering, offering the opportunity to meet mechanical engineering students, professionals, and professors and learn of the opportunities available within the Mechanical Engineering field.
PROJECT GOALS
• Motivate students to pursue engineering degrees. • Promote male and female Hispanic students to pursue engineering fields. • Educate students in the opportunities the engineering field has to offer.
EVALUATION
The project’s success was measured through student engagement and feedback from the participants. Academic counselors from different schools in Puerto Rico have asked us to repeat this event in the future because they found it very informational.
The Mechanical Engineering Experience Day consisted of the following events:
• What is Mechanical Engineering? Conference
o Dr. Ivan Baiges
• What is Biomedical Engineering? Conference
o Dr. Ruben Diaz
• Opportunities within Mechanical Engineering: COOPs, Internships and Research
o Students: Christopher Ayala, Inty Garcia and Ilka Rodriguez
• UPRM Special Projects Expo
o ASME Human Powered Vehicle
o SAE Solar Car, Formula and Baja
o College Robotics Projects
• Egg Drop Challenge
STUDENT PARTICIPATION BREAKDOWN
A total of 161 students participated in the Mechanical Engineering Experience Day. Of these 104 were male (65%) and 57 were female (35%). One of the objectives of this event was to reach students from other geographic areas of the island. In this sense, 86 students were from the West Coast (53%) and 75 were from the rest of the island (47%). Additionally, it was our intention to reach public school students. Out of the 161 participants, 95 were from Public School (59%) and 66 were from Private School (41%).
