Music is powerful and universal. Almost everyone has their own personal sense of music. For some, that personal sense is exploratory and fun, and for others it is a strong drive to study and perform. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra proudly announces the launch of The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Center for Music Education, a multi-faceted institution that offers meaningful music education programs for both the novice and the aspiring artist. In a time when music education is under threat, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra steps forward as a visible leader and vocal advocate for music for everyone. We invite you to join us as a participant, an audience member, a supporter, and a volunteer: www.aso.org/edu.

The American Journey through MusicOur country was colonized by Europeans who brought with them a bold spirit and many traditions, including classical music. However, it wasn’t long before the dreams of colonists were big and a new nation was founded. As we grew through western expansion, urban development, and modern advancements, music was there all along the way. This exciting multi-media music program captures the human journey through the eyes of Americans through the ages. Students and teachers will discover how music evolved as an expression of the American spirit. Produced as a collaborative project with the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre and Young Audiences – Woodruff Arts Center.

Engaging a Broader AtlantaThe Atlanta Symphony Orchestra embraces diversity and partners with organizations like the Latin American Association, the Mexican Consulate, and Latino affinity groups to better serve as an arts resource to the rapidly growing Latino community. Through community concerts and participation in festivals and heritage celebrations, the Orchestra is constantly working to connect with a broader Atlanta and serve as a meaningful resource for the many different citizens who make up our community.
New HarmoniesThe Orchestra continues its three-year partnership with the Georgia Humanities Council and the Smithsonian as a sponsor and presenter of New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music. This travelling museum exhibit exploring American musical traditions will visit eight more rural Georgia communities this season, and bring with it community and education programs of the Atlanta Symphony. During the tour you can find members of the orchestra teaching and performing in Darien, Perry, Moultrie, Toccoa, Bremen, Thomson, Nashville, and Americus, along with Waycross and LaGrange at the start of the 2013-2014 season.
CommunityMusic is a relevant and powerful force in the lives of all people. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra regularly partners with community organizations dedicated to the greater social good and works to ensure access to musical programs which meet a broad spectrum of needs for all of Atlanta. The Orchestra is proud to be an internationally recognized organization that remains deeply connected to and invested in our local communities through programs that help strengthen neighborhoods, heal the sick, serve the elderly, and celebrate our rich and varied traditions.
Community

a new world of culture for those that are unable to afford to attend shows on their own. It also exposes children to art in its true form and allows them to experience life beyond their neighborhood.

Musicians in CommunitiesAtlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians not only perform for the community, but are also members of the community. They make themselves available on an individual or small ensemble basis to local non-profits who wish to utilize their talents in service to the community. Symphony musicians have performed in nursing homes, schools, libraries, soup kitchens, and many other community locations, serving over 11,000 community members annually. Visit our website to learn how your organization can become involved.
Volunteer for MusicNothing brings people together more than a shared cause. Through the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Education and Community Volunteer Program you will not only support music in the classroom and community, but also make a personal impact on the individuals we serve on a daily basis. Volunteers are needed for a wide variety of education and community events including Instrument Petting Zoos, concert ushering, and hosting community concerts.
Community Ticketing ProgramThe magic of live instrumental music is often beyond the reach of many members of the community. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is proud to partner with dozens of Atlanta non-profit organizations to provide access to hundreds of individuals who otherwise would never attend a concert. New this year, the program includes “Music for the Military” to provide discounted admissions for veterans and military families.

Educators and communities look to the Orchestra to strengthen music education for schools in the region. The Orchestra, in turn has worked with educators in recent years to define our role as both a partner and a resource for quality music education. In 2011-2012, 880 students received music instruction and 37,349 audience members attended their performances. In the same year, 5,819 students were exposed to music through our Musicians in Schools program, and another 43,034 students, teachers and family members attended ASO educational concerts.
You can help set the stage for the future of instrumental music by making a charitable gift today. You may also include support for music education within your overall estate and financial plans. Your donation is tax-deductible and helps the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra fill the void of music in the lives of students.
