Where we are going
• Volunteers may make better adoption counselors than us
• Impact of adoption fees
• Pets obtained as gifts…are they at high risk?
• Exploration of policy based adoptions vs conversation based adoptions

Let’s give pets as a gifts
![Page 18: Aspca closing handouts__final](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022021922/58881a361a28ab083c8b6669/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

What the Data Tells us…
•Dogs obtained as gifts are less likely to be
relinquished than dogs obtained from a
shelter, a friend, as a stray or from a pet
shop. (New et al, 2000)
•Cats obtained as gifts are less likely to be
relinquished than those that are obtained
from a shelter, a friend, as a stray or from a
pet shop. (New et al, 2000)
![Page 19: Aspca closing handouts__final](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022021922/58881a361a28ab083c8b6669/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

20
•Pets are rarely relinquished because they
are a unwanted gift (Scarlett, 1999)
• Dogs received as gifts are significantly
less at risk for relinquishment compared to
those that were purchased or adopted
(Patronek, 1996)
![Page 21: Aspca closing handouts__final](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022021922/58881a361a28ab083c8b6669/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
