As we approach the end of the 2007-2008 program year it seems like any disappointments we may have had were turned into positives, allowing us to end the year on a high instead of a low. We lost a speaker (Phil Parker of ISMET Control Systems) due to a sudden stroke in March, yet we had a satisfactory fill-in program thanks to the Taggart- Knight Group. I am happy to report that Phil is slowly recovering and may be able to do his program in Spring 2009. I am also pleased and excited to announce a program for our May meeting of interest for Plumbing Design Professionals (P.E.’s) CPD’s, and Mechanical Contractors doing design build jobs, inclusive of total mechanical system installations. “The Next Generation of 3D Cad—How Building Integration Modeling (BMI) is used for Construction Coordination” will be presented by Ryan Beaudrie. As we approach the end of the 2007-2008 program year it

seems like any disappointments we may have had were

turned into positives, allowing us to end the year on a high

instead of a low. We lost a speaker (Phil Parker of ISMET

Control Systems) due to a sudden stroke in March, yet we

had a satisfactory fill-in program thanks to the Taggart-

Knight Group. I am happy to report that Phil is slowly

recovering and may be able to do his program in Spring

2009. I am also pleased and excited to announce a program

for our May meeting of interest for Plumbing Design Professionals (P.E.’s) CPD’s,

and Mechanical Contractors doing design build jobs, inclusive of total mechanical

system installations. “The Next Generation of 3D Cad—How Building Integration

Modeling (BMI) is used for Construction Coordination” will be presented by Ryan

Beaudrie. Ryan has been involved in this process and has been a lead coordinator

and problem solver to keep cost of construction within project budgets for con-

tractors and owners alike. For more information on this program check out our web

site or contact George Johnston for a flyer. This is an opportunity you do not want

to pass up.

May 20, 2008 is the time we nominate and elect the officers and directors for the

2008-2009 year. Your input would go a long way in selecting and electing future

leaders to carry on the Eastern Michigan Chapter of ASPE. The Chapter needs and

wants you to participate and be willing to be mentored for future chapter leader-

ship positions.

A June Planning Meeting will take place for next season’s programming. Your

input is needed to assure us we are addressing your wants and needs. Please pass

your ideas along to any board member.

June 3, 2008 is Spotlight on the Manufacturers, from 8:00 AM till 3:00 PM at

the Plumbing Industry Training Center. A great chance for you to visit and see

what’s new in the Plumbing Industry and listen to the speakers featured on the flyer

as well as those at the displays. This is a chance to come and go as it suits your

needs, or stay the day to network with your fellow trade disciplines in the Plumbing

and Mechanical Industry namely Design Professionals, Contractors, Inspectors,

Journeypersons, Apprentices and Students seeking careers within the Industry.

A continental breakfast in the AM or lunch in the PM is on the manufacturers and

the Chapter. Ginny Corpt, our caterer, will provide the food.

Spotlight on the Manufacturers is open to anyone in the Plumbing and Mechanical

Industry striving to further the gains in protecting the health and safety of the gen-

Ryan Beaudrie has been with Ron George

Design & Consulting Services for over four

years, where he has been involved in the

design, engineering and coordination of

plumbing and mechanical systems for many

types of buildings which included hospitals,

casinos, hotels, automotive facilities, restau-

rants and office buildings. He has managed

and overseen the 3D CAD coordination process where he was

the lead coordinator for a particular mechanical trade for many

large and complicated projects in Metro Detroit. He has experi-

ence working with the contractor and/or owner to develop multi-

ple ways to solve problems which allows them to select the

solutions that best fi t their needs at a cost within the project’s

budget. He uses 3D CAD to layout, draw and coordinate

mechanical systems for various buildings in 3D which are then

given to the field crews for installation or the shop for fabrica-

tion. Some of the projects he has worked on include: University

of Michigan Children’s & Women’s Hospital, MGM Casino &

Hotel, Motor City Casino & Hotel, Fort Shelby Hotel, Henry

Ford Hospital – West Bloomfield and Oakwood Southshore

Medical Center.

Topics to be covered:

✶ How BIM and 3D CAD coordination is the way of the future

✶ Who is involved in the process?

✶ Proper way to organize and set up these projects

✶ Setting up project guidelines so everyone is coordinating

together efficiently

✶ How computer programs can draw mechanical systems in 3D

✶ How computer programs can produce 3D models of the

building and its mechanical systems before the building is

built

✶ How these programs produce clash reports of the clashes

between mechanical trades and building elements

✶ The cost savings of using this process

✶ The decreases in field changes

✶ Greatly reduces the amount of work needed to produce as

built

✶ How it’s cheaper to change things in the computer than in

the field

✶ How the owner can also benefit from this process

✶ This makes it easier to fabricate items in the shop

✶ Allows great communication between contractors, engineers,

project management and owners

Greetings to all ASPE, ASSE, MBPA and

Local 98 members who missed the best

monthly program we were able to assemble,

with the NSF International in Ann Arbor, MI.

By my count, there were only 22 privileged

members that took advantage of this out-

standing offer by attending the program. We

were looking for a much larger turnout.

Jeremy Brown, Codes & Regulatory

Manager of NSF International, also an ASPE member, welcomed

us in the lobby, along with the NSF’s gracious staff for the regis-

tration and coordination. Special thanks to the following people:

✲ Nancy Bednarz, Business Manager of Plastics

✲ Christine Chapin, Certification Project Manager

✲ Kellie Grosteffon, Certification Project Manager

✲ Paula Trombley, Event Coordinator

As we registered, the hostess handed us an NSF cap and directed

us to the waiting group of ASPE members who were ready to

start the special grand tour of the facilities. We met with:

1. Kurt Kneen, Chemistry Lab Director, in the tour of NSF’s

Chemistry and Microbiology Laboratories.

2. Dave Orton, Test Engineer, for the tour of NSF’s Mechanical

Plumbing Laboratories.

3. Dave Parzen, Special Projects Manager, for the tour of

NSF’s Plastic Testing Laboratories.

The NSF International tour presented an educational, practical

experience and, in reality, something you would want the oppor-

tunity to see for yourself and record to memory for future use.

The methodology was explained—all the steps needed to accom-

plish the development of a standard and the necessary step-by-

step progression required for the standard to be established as an

acceptable one, recognized throughout the world.

To get to the final standard, it is extremely important to thorough-

ly and diligently investigate each step in the process, recording all

factors and the results of each test, finally reaching a solid con-

clusion for the criteria. It is very comforting to see the label on

the NSF branded products in your daily life and KNOW, by virtue

of witnessing the process first hand, that you can really trust the

safety of that product for yourself and your family.

After the two-hour tour, we were invited to an appetizing dinner

of breaded chicken breast, vegetables, salad, desert and beverage.

Following the meal, a presentation was made by Jeremy Brown

on the health effects and performance requirements of plumbing

products. Tara Sniezek, the Business Manager of Drinking Water

Treatment Units, followed Jeremy with a presentation on how

drinking water filters are tested. The presentations were open to

questions at all times and the tour and programs were greatly

enjoyed by all the attendees. We thank the staff members of NSF

International and Jeremy Brown for an excellent program.
