President’s MessageI want to welcome each of you to the wonderful city of New Orleans. I am so excited about each of you being able to come and enjoy the wonderful 38th Annual ASPSN Convention: “Teamwork in Action.” We have a wonderful informative and comprehensive program planned for you which will include multiple meeting opportunities, educational offerings and a chance to mingle and network with each other. The 2012 SSPC and your Board of Directors has worked diligently to provide a program to meet all your needs. I am excited that we can provide some new and exciting educational opportunities such as two pre convention workshops which will include Essentials of Skin Care and Foundational Competency in the Safe Use of the KCI ActiV.A.C.® and InfoV.A.C.® Therapy Systems with the basic Application and Removal of a V.A.C.® GranuFoam™, V.A.C. GranuFoam Silver® or V.A.C.® WhiteFoam Dressing. Enjoy educational opportunities in either the aesthetic, reconstructive or management tracks.

October weather in New Orleans is usually awesome so there are lots of outdoor festivals and events this month. New Orleans is the Festival Capital of the World. There are dozens of festivals that celebrate the unique food, music and multicultural heritage of New Orleans. You might want to check out the Voodoo Music Experience which brings together great music, food and crafts. Every year, just in time for Halloween, the Voodoo Music Experience places New Orleans under a weekend-long spell of music, food, crafts and culture. This festival takes over City Park. City Park is located just a short, 15-minute drive from the French Quarter. Then there is the Oktoberfest which celebrates German heritage with live traditional music, traditional German folk dancing, and authentic German cuisine. Oktoberfest is celebrated in the New Orleans area in the Rivertown section of Kenner. In New Orleans we’ve always got a reason to eat drink and be merry! New Orleans celebrates food, music, art and more. So whether you are a literary aficionado, a po boy addict or just looking to boogie to amazing live music in the Louisiana sunshine- there is a festival or event right up your alley. Enjoy your time here!

I am so happy each of you took the time, effort and money to invest in this educational meeting! This meeting is unique, special and is for YOU! I truly hope you will enjoy your experience here in New Orleans, and further your education as we continue to fulfill the mission of the ASPSN. If there is anything I can do for you please feel free to contact me at anytime; I am here for you! Reach out, grab on, and hang on for a great meeting!!!!

5The Roosevelt Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana

Scientific Sessions Planning Committee WelcomeWelcome to the 38th annual ASPSN National Convention, the premiere event of our nursing domain. Focusing on the theme Teamwork in Action, the 2012 Scientific Sessions Planning Committee feels as if this year’s plastic surgery nursing meeting offers the most innovative and comprehensive slate of educational opportunities for plastic surgery nursing to date. We again have cutting-edge topics, courses, and a faculty that is outstanding. Additionally, with the extensive complement of focus this year, we are pleased that we are able to provide contact nursing units in safety; pharmacology; and pain, just to cite a few of the specialty and general nursing requirements needed for enduring certification maintenance and licensure.

Our ASPSN 2012 meeting kicks off on Friday, October 25th with two pre-convention workshops that are certain to inform and educate both the reconstructive plastic surgery nurse, as well as the office aesthetic nurse. This fall, we are delighted to partner with KCI and offer a KCI Wound Vac workshop where participants will achieve a certificate of completion and a credential in an ANCC accredited nursing skills competency. The achievement of this workshop and the awarded credential should prove to be a distinctive significance for you to take back to your office or academic institution.

The other workshop, “Essentials of Skin Care,” is the innovation of our very own 2012 SSPC Aesthetic Track Chair, Haley Wood, WHNP, CPSN. Haley pioneered the development of this very unique symposium with much zeal and enthusiasm. She assiduously worked on bringing together a top-notch expert skin care faculty. She also diligently pursued and partnered with our industry’s most elite skin care companies to provide the utmost in practitioner education. The greatest distinctive experience and highlight for this inaugural workshop will be the “live demos” and chemical peel applications that will be integrated into the curriculum for all workshop registrants to actively partake in.

While you continue to explore the various aspects of the New Orleans education program, keep in mind that along with the time-tested concurrent sessions and events, the ASPSN 2012 meeting will also offer a few innovative venues in the form of interactive panels, poster points with the authors, and the ASPSN debut of “The Founders Lecture.” This presentation, which commences Saturday morning, will provide some surprising history and insight of the individuals responsible for the formation of our nursing society. Furthermore, and new to the hotel platform for 2012, we are introducing our very own “Nurse Exhibit” display right here in The Roosevelt Hotel. This exclusive setting will provide you with plenty of occasions to mingle with colleagues and exhibitors and to meet with the sponsors and company representatives who offer invaluable support to our meeting.

Continuing, and true to tradition, the ASPSN 2012 meeting will feature our Welcome Reception, and I am very excited to share with you that our 2012 “Welcome Reception,” has been generously sponsored by our friends at The Marena Group! Marena Group’s “Masquerade Gala” will take place in the historic and elegant Blue Room here at The Roosevelt Hotel, on Saturday October 27th. Marena has always provided us unforgettable memories at past conventions and they only

get better! So, be certain to join The Marena Group for this true New Orleans style event complete with live revelers/performers, drinks, hors d’oeuvres and, of course, dancing!

As you settle in and prepare to garner a few plastic surgery pearls, remember that this 38th annual convention will be focused entirely on you as you involve yourself in the ASPSN 2012 meeting. You won’t be able to see and do everything during your stay in New Orleans, but be sure to take some well deserved leisure time and stroll along Bourbon Street, where the vibrant heart of the French Quarter is home to some of the city’s liveliest bars, best restaurants, and most popular live music venues. Moreover be mindful, that the French Quarter is also home to the impressive and historic Jackson Square. Historic Jackson Square as it is now known, was originally recognized in the 18th century as “Place d’Armes,” and was later renamed in honor of the Battle of New Orleans hero; Andrew Jackson. This historic square is a timeless attraction in the center of the French Quarter of New Orleans and should be on everyone’s “to see” list. This grand plaza is overlooked by St. Louis Cathedral, and the Presbytere and Cabildo (Louisiana State Museums), all of which are surrounded by unique retail outlets and fine restaurants. Jackson Square is truly a favorite site for visitors and locals alike.

However, if the busyness of Bourbon Street or the French Quarter does not appeal to you, then perhaps, something more traditional and quiet is your preference. In that case, be sure to head to Royal Street for a more refined French Quarter experience. Here you will find an eclectic mix of upscale boutiques, art galleries and elegant antique shops. Nevertheless, and no matter what your penchant, something extraordinary for you to commemorate the ASPSN 2012 meeting and your visit to New Orleans would be a personal (or group) portrait painted by one of Jackson Square’s skilled street artists. What a fun and meaningful souvenir for old and new “convention” friends alike!

In closing, and on behalf of the 2012 Scientific Sessions Planning Committee, we would be remiss if we did not thank our outstanding “local host”--ASPSN member, Maria Castracane. Maria has unselfishly aided the ASPSN over the past year in numerous ways to bring you the best of what New Orleans has to offer. She also was extremely instrumental in identifying the ASPSN Pay It Forward project–The Woman’s Hospital. For the record, the Woman’s Hospital is a nonprofit organization whose overall mission is to improve the health of women and infants. This is an institution that relies heavily on personal contributions. All their proceeds are reinvested in new equipment; community service programs; and annually, executes more than 6,700 surgeries, 44,000 mammograms, and 87,000 pap tests for the impoverished population of Louisiana. Please remember to be generous in your altruistic giving for this remarkable hospital. Donations can be made throughout the meeting at the registration area.

We are so excited that you are here! We warmly welcome each of you to North America’s Premiere Plastic Surgery Nurses Meeting, and we look forward to making your acquaintance and talking with you throughout the convention. We sincerely feel that the ASPSN 2012 meeting is filled with great educational opportunities and something unique and special for all attendees here in The Big Easy. Therefore…empower your knowledge, have fun, and enjoy!!

Warmest Regards,
