Absences and Exemptions from School Attendance

At Asquith Girls High School it is our expectation that students attend school every day. However, there are occasionally times when parents seek exemption from attendance on behalf of their daughters.

If you are seeking absence from school because you have to start holidays early, or are expecting to return to school after school resumes in 2010, a letter to the Principal, explaining the reason for the absence from school, is needed. The letter must include the student’s full name, year and inclusive dates of absence.

For leave greater than 5 days, an application for exemption from school attendance must be completed on an official application form, available from the school office. This is completed by the parent/carer and returned to the school office for the Principal’s approval.

OUTSTANDING HSC RESULTS Congratulations to the HSC class of 2009 for outstanding results with 77 band 6 results and 20 plus students with ATARS over 90 including our DUX Ji Hyun Do with an exceptional ATAR of 99.15. Also Amy I’Anson was placed on the State Honours list for achieving Band 6 in 10 or more units, a fantastic achievement. As you can see in the table (previous page). many diverse subjects are represented with these high achievements. Also I would like to recognise that many other students did very well, gaining marks and ATARS in the 70’s and 80’s reflecting hard work in achieving their personal best.

Welcome Back Welcome back to all students, staff and parents, and a special welcome to all our new Year 7 students and their families. Everybody seems very relaxed after the holiday and ready to put their best foot forward making a positive start to the new year. Congratulations on the standard of uniform and ensuring you are equipped with black lace up shoes.

We are very fortunate that Ms Nerida McGeachie joins Ms Karen DiStefano as a Deputy Principal at Asquith Girls. Ms McGeachie has a wealth of experience in student welfare, teaching and learning, and as a regional consultant in supporting the laptop roll out and implementation of interactive whiteboards. She will be the Deputy responsible for Years 7, 9 and 11.

Also welcome to other new members of staff. Ms Anne Kostyrka is our new school counsellor and Mr Stephen Rowntree our new Technical Support Officer. In the teaching staff we are joined by Ms O’Sullivan in English, Ms Fisk and Ms Govender in Science, Ms Bird and Ms Northcote in TAS, and for Term 1 Ms Gillispie and Ms Rule in LOTE. Also congratulations to Ms Harrison in English and Mr Bell in Science who have now been appointed to the school by merit in permanent positions.

Ms Jane Ferris, Principal

As the new Deputy Principal I am very pleased to have joined Asquith Girls High School in 2010. I have come from the Northern Sydney Regional office where I have been working for the past two and half years as a teaching and learning consultant, supporting the 36 high schools in our region to implement quality teaching learning programs across Years 7 to 12. In the past six months this specifically has involved the implementation of the Digital Education Revolution. Previous to this role I was Head Teacher of Teaching and Learning at Cheltenham Girls High School and acting Head Teacher at Cherrybrook Technology High School.

I am very much looking forward to working with the professional and caring teachers and support staff I know make up the Asquith Girls’ community and of course the students and their parents. As Deputy I will be working with the whole school but specifically with the “odd” years being Years 7, 9 and 11. I hope to meet as many of you as possible during the year as the many school events take place during 2010.

Mrs Nerida McGeachie, Deputy Principal

Welcome back. I hope that everyone had a relaxing break as this year is already shaping as a busy and exciting one for Asquith Girls. After the students ended their year in 2009, the staff participated in two professional development days. Sessions covered first aid, training in managing anaphylaxis issues and further professional development in a variety of fields to support the integration of technology in teaching and learning in the classroom. Everyone is very keen to put these new skills into practice during 2010, especially with the student personal laptops in Year 10 and soon in Year 9. The staff also started this year with professional development in the new Department of Education code of conduct and also sessions on improving literacy and numeracy skills for all students.

School photos will be taken Friday 19th February and envelopes will be sent home shortly. Make sure your daughter returns the envelope on the photo day with the correct money enclosed. (Please see notice included.)

I must congratulate everyone on the standard of uniform on returning to school. It is always very pleasing to have such strong parental support with these issues.

I am looking forward to another successful year with the education of your daughters.

Ms Karen Di Stefano, Deputy Principal

From the Mathematics Faculty

The Mathematics Faculty would like to welcome all Year 7 students and parents/caregivers to Asquith Girls High School. Each student will be issued with a Year 7 Signposts textbook and your daughter is encouraged to borrow a CD of the book from the Library. This CD can be installed on your home computer and then returned to the Library. This allows your daughter to leave her textbook in a locker if she wishes, instead of carrying her book to school.

Students require a Board of Studies approved scientific calculator, to be used at school and in external examinations. We will be holding a calculator sale day on Thursday 18th February from 8:00am in room 18. A letter providing full details will be sent home shortly with your daughter. The cost of the calculator will be $35.00.

The National Numeracy Test will be held during May and students in Year 7 are required to have their own calculator for this external test.

Lockers The school has recently purchased new lockers which are larger than previous ones and we supply a security padlock for each locker. The cost of hiring a locker for the year is $40. Students wishing to hire a locker are to pay at the school office and bring their receipt to the Mathematics staffroom before school and their locker will be allocated.

Careers Department Update

A reminder to all parents that if you wish to know about all the career related activities and opportunities that are offered to high school students then you should regularly access the mhscareers website (www.mhscareers.com). This enables parents and students to be informed about all the options relating to the workforce, further education options and other opportunities that can assist a young person in their career planning. This site is available to all students (and their parents and guardians) who attend registered schools. Asquith Girls is a registered school.

On this website parents and students can research and increase their knowledge in three ways.

• Firstly the site includes links to many websites relevant to young career planners. This includes universities, TAFE, private colleges, defence force, police, nursing, apprenticeships etc (the list goes on). This can be found in the Explore Careers section.

• Secondly, parents and students can register to receive email alerts that inform them of most career activities such as open days, scholarship opportunities, employment recruitment programs, information nights etc. Click onto Main Home (in green bar) and then onto email alerts. (Follow instructions for registered school.)

• Thirdly, there is a password protected section that allows access to the Latest Careers News Section. To access this section parents need to put in parent and use the password music. Students put in student and use the same password.

This site should prove very useful for both parents and students throughout this year.

Religious Education

Welcome to all of our new students and welcome back to our returning students! It is lovely to see you all again, refreshed after the holidays.

Religious Education is undertaken by all students from Years 7 - 10. It is independently funded by local churches through a committee known as the Hornsby and Asquith District Christian Education Association (HADCEA). Our Religious Education Teacher at Asquith Girls is Mrs Ainsley Hodgson.

There will be a Commissioning Service for Mrs Ainsley Hodgson (AGHS) and Mr Peter Thomsett (ABHS) on Saturday 13th February, 2010 at St John’s Anglican Church, Asquith from 7.45pm. Please come if you would like to learn more about the work Mrs Hodgson does in our school and pray for her work this year. Any staff, students or parents are welcome to attend.

German Excursion

On Tuesday 8th December the Years 8 and 9 German classes went to the Löwenbräu Keller, a German restaurant in the Rocks. The restaurant has an authentic German feel to it. It is decorated with many beer steins, kegs and pictures. The waiters and waitresses wear Lederhosen (traditional leather pants) and really cute, very short German skirts and tops (called Dirndl).

Before enjoying our lunch we were treated to some traditional German beer hall music. The musician played lots of traditional German songs and we were able to join in and sing along to “Ein Prosit!”, “O du lieber Augustion”, “Muss i denn” and “In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus”.

The food was delicious and included such traditional dishes as:

Chicken Schnitzel Creamy Potato Mash Roast Pork Ribs in Beer Sauce Spätzle Char-grilled Nurnberger Sausages Apple Strudel

The most popular dish by far was the Chicken Schnitzel!

All in all it was a fun and interesting day.

What’s Happening in PDHPE

Zone Blue Recipients for 2009 Metropolitan North Girls SSSA Sporting Blues were awarded to Alexandra Rogers for her achievements in Athletics and to Elizabeth Carr for achievements in Cross Country. A Zone Sporting Blue is an exceptional award and should be regarded as the pinnacle of sporting achievement. Alexandra and Elizabeth have been exemplary athletes in their efforts to training, attitude and sportsmanship, as well as competing at an elite level for many years.

ASQUITH GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL-2010 The annual AGHS Swimming Carnival is due to be held on Monday 15th February 2010 at Hornsby Olympic Pool. This is always a fun and exciting day. The cost of the day is $3.00 to cover venue, equipment hire and pool entry. Students are to make their own way to and from the venue, 203 Pacific Highway, Hornsby. (It is an easy walk from Hornsby train station.)

Roll marking will commence at 8.40am, located on the grass outside the pool. Students are not to enter the pool before Roll Call unless wishing to compete in the 200m and 400m events, which will commence at 8.00am. All students will be dismissed for the day at around 2.45pm.

All parents are reminded that this is a compulsory school day just like any other for both junior and senior students. Participation on the day will contribute to the final grade for Year 7-10 PDHPE and all elective PDHPE classes, as well of course to house tallies for the carnival. Students who are unable to swim are requested to bring a note of explanation with them on the day. This note is to be given to Mrs. Horne and they are to assist as a helper in the running of the carnival for part of the day to fulfill their participation requirements.

Dress will be sporting attire in house colours or PE uniform (no jeans). Students should also bring a hat, sunscreen, a towel, food and drink for the day, or money to purchase lunch from the canteen. Students are also requested NOT to bring ipods or other valuables to the pool and no crepe paper is allowed (pool policy).

As always, parent spectators are very welcome and are reminded they will be required to pay a $2.50 pool entry at the front entrance. Any questions can be directed to Mrs Horne in the PDHPE Faculty.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs Lois Horne, Sports Coordinator

From the Science Faculty Marine Studies Goes Canoeing The last Marine Studies excursion for 2009 was a canoe trip on Berowra Creek. The students canoed from

Crosslands Reserve to Sam’s Creek and back. They were on the lookout for water birds, however, it was too hot

and the birds remained cool and out of sight. It was so hot the class spent about as much time in the water as

canoeing.

Jenolan Caves Science Excursion 2009 On 9th December 2009, 120 Year 8 students and six teachers made the long, but rewarding, trek to Jenolan Caves

in the Blue Mountains. The girls had the opportunity to experience the amazing visual experience of seeing their

recent studies in geology and the Australian environment be brought to life. Three tours were undertaken: a local

bushwalk, a self guided tour of Nettle Cave, and a guided tour of Lucas Cave. The enthusiasm shown by the

students throughout the day was evident by the large number of camera flashes continually lighting up the

darkness inside the caves. A wonderful day was had by all.

Presentation Night 2009 Once again our hardworking and talented students at Asquith Girls High School were recognised and congratulated at Presentation Night held on 15th December 2009. Thanks to all the students and the special guests who attended and made it such a successful evening.

‘Learning to be Leaders’

Peer Support Training Day An overwhelming response was received from Year 9 students last year when they were asked to nominate to become 2010 Peer Support Leaders. They saw this as a great leadership opportunity and had fond memories of the assistance they had on their transition to high school.

In preparation for Peer Support 2010, sixty students spent a training day participating in a range of activities similar to those they will use with their Peer Support groups.

‘Juggling more than one ball at a time’ took on a whole new meaning as they worked to solve a group challenge. Trying to work out the most effective way to give clear instructions for building a model from paddle pop sticks was testing. Preparing for a fancy dress party creating fashionable designs from newspaper was a lot of fun!

The students enjoyed working with their group leaders - Mr Tagg, Ms Ebrahimi, Mrs Stevens, Ms Hope and Ms Andrews. Ms Sweers presented a great session about body image which was highly rated by all the students in their evaluations.

The Peer Support Leaders ably ran their first Peer Support session on Orientation Day using all these skills. They are an enthusiastic group of students ready to assist Year 7 to build resilience which is so important for mental wellbeing and will help them face the challenge of the transition into high school.

Ms Renee Andrews, HT Female Students

The Peer Support program provides opportunities and an environment for students to develop skills for building positive relationships and encourages participation.

Peer Leaders practise leadership roles, develop confidence in leading a group, act a positive role model and develop organisational and time management skills.

Asquith Girls High School P&C, together with the Student Representative Council (SRC), will be hosting an informal get-together for the Year 7 parents/caregivers and students. This will give many of you an opportunity to meet students’ classmates, teachers and Year Adviser.

The evening will be in the form of a BBQ held in the area next to the oval from 5:30pm until 7:15pm on Wednesday 10th February.

Many of the teachers will be available to talk about how your daughters are settling in to Year 7. Members of the school Executive, Peer Support representatives and the Year 7 Adviser will also be in attendance.

A gold coin donation per attendee will be requested on the night to help cover the cost of sausage sandwiches and refreshments.

We would like to know of your intention to attend to allow for catering and name tag purposes.

Please email me or ask your daughter to return the slip below to the specially marked box in the school administration office by this coming Monday, 8th February.

The first meeting of the P&C is on the same evening commencing at 7.30pm and you are welcome to attend.
