Assignment title 1. Development and Organisation of Sport

The purpose of this assignment is to: The aim and purpose of this assignment is linked to Learning Outcome 1: Know how sport has developed in the UK and allows the learner to explore the development of a selected sport in the UK, from pre-industrial to contemporary times and examine how the sport has evolved in the context of the wider society, with the focus on the British experience.

Scenario:You are working as a Sport Development Officer for Manchester College and have been asked to research a specific sport focusing on the development and organisation of that sport in the UK.Once your research has been completed you must produce a poster to support your research detailing how the chosen sport has evolved and developed in modern society.

Task:For P1, you should select a recognised sport in the UK, research the development and organisation of that sport. Highlight key points and describe how that sport has developed since pre-industrialised times.

The following factors that relate to development include: early British sport (e.g. agricultural society), effects of industrial revolution, influence of public schools, rationalisation and regulation, twentieth century (e.g. better working conditions, outdoor activities, influence of war).

For the sport you select, describe how your sport is organised in the UK today, you should include the role of the government through to local authorities and the national governing bodies of sport. Key organisations you could include are; Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Central Council for Physical Recreation, UK sport, Sport England, Sport England, Sport Scotland, the Sports council for Wales, the Sports council Northern Ireland, National Governing Bodies.

To achieve M1, you need to explain the development and the organisation of a selected sport in the UK, demonstrating knowledge of that sport and how it fits into the UK sports framework. You should provide a detailed account and relevant sporting examples of how your chosen sport has developed since pre-industrial Britain and discuss the factors that may have had an influence on your chosen sport and why.

You also need to explain by giving a detailed account of how your selected sport is organised in the UK today and discuss how key organisations influence the organisation and structure of the sport. For example “the national governing body of tennis is the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). The LTA helps to influence the structure and organisation of the sport by setting, implementing and changing rules, organising competitions both nationally and internationally through all standards, finding officials for matches etc…”

Assignment title 2. Technology, Media and Contemporary Issues.

The purpose of this assignment is to: The aim and purpose of this assignment is linked to Learning Outcome 2: Know how media and technology influence modern sport and Learning Outcome 3: Know how contemporary issues affect sport and allows the learner to investigate how the media has a massive influence on modern day sport and issues such as the rise of satellite television coverage, sponsorship, and the vast amount of space given to sport in newspapers and television all affect sport. Also the effect that technology has on a selected sport and the effects of contemporary issues such as sport in schools, racism and sexism in sport, and the commercialisation of sport.

Scenario: As a member of the Sports Development Team you have been asked to prepare and deliver a PowerPoint presentation with notes to the department. Your presentation must detail how a sport of your choice has evolved and changed through the influence of technology, media and contemporary issues.

Task:To achieve P2, you are required to describe the influence of the media on a selected sport in the UK.

Factors that can be discussed include: satellite television, event programming, sponsorship, advertising, broadcast rights, spectatorism, punditry, narrative techniques. Other factors you must describe and explain include: rule changes, timeouts, local and national press (e.g. magazines, sensationalism, gender imbalance, jingoism), internet (e.g. chat rooms, fans sites, merchandising).

For M2, you should offer insight and be able to explain how the media influences the chosen sport. You could explain by giving a detailed account with examples on how television has influenced the sport of your choice, for example, “commentary should be fair and honest, but we commonly hear biased views., “one commentator who suggests an Olympians performance as “suspiciously fast” could spark a media and worldwide frenzy over night, leading to that athlete being suspected of drug abuse, all due to one man/women’s opinion of their performance. This was seen when…….”

To achieve P3, you need to present a description of the effect of technology on the chosen sport. Factors that must be described include: clothing, personal equipment, cameras (e.g. replay, freeze frame), analysis (e.g. drug testing equipment, lactate threshold training, hyperbaric chambers, computer/video analysis)

For M3, you should extend this description to fully explain the effects and include examples to support your explanation. For example, Usain Bolt wears spikes developed by Puma to enable him to make the best friction with the track as possible. This has allowed him to run faster than anyone else in history by decreasing his contact time with the ground. In comparison to pre-industrial times where athletes ran bear footed, athletes of those times will not be able to compete in the same league”.

To achieve P4, you should describe four contemporary issues, and how these affect the selected sport. Select four of the contemporary issues in relation to your selected sport:1. deviance (for example: anti-crime initiatives and social exclusion, gamesmanship, drugs and banned substances), 2. education and sport in schools, 3. racism,4. commercialisation, 5. politics, 6. religion and culture, 7. gender issues

For M4, you should offer considered reasons for the issues and their effects on the selected sport. You should explain by providing examples and giving a detailed account, why these contemporary issues affect the sport you have chosen. For example, deviance occurs in athletics, Dwain Chambers is an

3

Page 4: Ass Brief Curerent Issues 2013-14

example of this. He took anabolic steroids to enhance his performance in 100m sprinting in 2003. Athletes may take performance-enhancing drugs because they feel under pressure to be the best/win from coaches, fans and the media…

An evaluation of the four contemporary issues and their effects on the chosen sport is required for D1.

To achieve the D1 criteria you should evaluate by discussing the advantages and disadvantages each contemporary issue has upon your selected sport.

For example: in swimming, sponsorships can help back an event that would not otherwise happen without the money provided from the sponsor. On the other hand, some swimming events could become reliant on the sponsor, therefore if the sponsor pulled out, the event would not be able to go ahead.

Assignment title3. Part 1: Barriers to Participation and Cultural Influences Park 2: Strategies and Initiatives

The purpose of this assignment is to: The aim and purpose of this assignment is linked to Learning Outcome 4: Understand the cultural influences and barriers that affect participation in sports activities and allows the learner to explore the barriers affecting sports

4

participation, such as available resources, travel time and disposable income. Learners will also investigate the many cultural factors that influence participation in sport, such as gender, ethnic background, and class, and current strategies and initiatives to address the issue of participation.

Scenario:Sports development has been non-existent in the local community and participation in sport is at an all-time low for all social groups and the local facilities are poor. Recently the town was awarded lottery funding to improve sports facilities and this has presented a range of new and improved facilities, but few are being used.

You have just been appointed by the local town council as an assistant sports development officer. You will be part of a brand new team with an exciting outlook. The town council wants the team to focus on combating the poor participation rates seen through all social groups. You and the team have the task of promoting sport in the town.

In order to improve the situation, you will need to make providers of sport and leisure aware of both the cultural influences and barriers to sports participation. You will also need to suggest strategies and initiatives that are designed to improve sports participation.

Task: To achieve P5, you will take part in a focus group discussion with the sports providers. You will explain, (by giving a detailed account), the main barriers to sports participation for specific target groups. You should provide information on the different factors that may have contributed to each barrier and provide examples of the types of people each barrier commonly effects and why?

Barriers to include: time; resources; fitness; ability; lifestyles; medical conditions.

You could also include facts and statistics relating to each barrier and methods of overcoming these barriers. For example, time is the most common reason given as a barrier to exercise. There are many reasons an individual may feel they do not have enough time, 31% of women feel they have not got enough time for exercise and this often because of home and family commitments. Men claim to have less time due to work commitments…

To achieve P6, you will also explain the cultural influences on sports participation. You must choose three of the following: Gender, Ethnicity, Age, Social-economic class and inform the sports providers how cultural influences effect sports participation, providing facts and statistics and relevant examples to support your answers. For example, as we age, participation in sport and exercise tends to decrease. Older people who do participate tend to choose individual non-contact sports compared to younger people who tend to involve themselves in more team and contact type sports. This could be due to a lack of older role models in sport.

Task 2: P7, M5, D2

Produce a report that describes (P7), explains (M5) and evaluates (D2) three strategies or initiatives which relate to sports participation and designed to improve sports participation by addressing cultural influences and barriers to exercise. You could include: Game Plan, Every Child Matters, Sporting Equals, TASS, Plan for Sport 2001, Coaching Task Force 2002, Girls First, Active Sports or Sportsmark.

To achieve a pass (P7), for this task you must describe three strategies or initiatives which relate to sports participation that are designed to improve sports participation by identifying the main aims and objectives of each strategy or initiative and methods of achieving their aims/objectives. For example, Every Child Matters is a national policy achieved through the local authorities aiming to support children and young people.

To achieve a merit (M5), for this task you must explain three strategies or initiatives which relate to sports participation and that are designed to improve sports participation. You should give an account of who the strategy/initiative is aimed at and why there is a need for the strategy/initiative. For example, the Sportsmark initiative is aimed at providing children and young people with better standards of PE and school sport. Children and young people, particularly girls do not participate in the recommended amount of sport and exercise of 5 times a week for 30mins at a moderate intensity and this is evident in the rising obesity levels seen in children and young people today. To achieve a distinction (D2), for this task you must evaluate by providing the advantages and disadvantages of three strategies or initiatives. You should justify your opinions of whether the strategy will be successful in increasing sports participation and include points for development. Provide a balanced critique.

For example, the coaching task force initiative will be effective in providing extra coaches in the

5

Page 6: Ass Brief Curerent Issues 2013-14

community, which means that more people will be able to participate in sport…etc. However, 3000 extra coaches are very little when looking at provision across the whole of the UK. These coaches will probably work within the most popular sports (e.g. football), leaving less popular sports (e.g. badminton) still without enough coaches…etc.
