HAVING LAID DOWN the laurels of a finalyear richly spent, as you start preparing for the ICSE and ISC examinations,

many of you (often for no reason at all) areundergoing considerable anxiety. You think in alinear fashion, imagining that a good percentage inthe Board Examinations will guarantee a good col-lege placement, which will then assure you a goodcareer and the promise of a stable life afterward. This is wrong. Life is not linear and the years thatfollow your graduation from these sylvan confineswill be as full of joys, sorrows, reversals and victo-ries as your years here. Increasingly, people switchjobs, hunting for that perfect career, and this un-certainty is by no means agonizing. The best insti-tutions are not always that much better than theones that come after them in the rankings and onceyou finish your education, you might often be atpar or better in the job market or graduate studyhunt as your counterparts from better institutions.Institutions are competitive and people are com-petitive. That exam that looms so large now willbecome a mere blip on your resume as you pro-ceed with your lives.

Learn for the sake of learning. Pick up skillsthat reflect or enhance your vocation. Convert thosehours spent in Social Service or Desktop Publishinginto a career that never fails to excite you.

Be with your friends, but study in silence. Playthat one hour of badminton or squash or go for a longwalk through the whispering groves of our campus.

Remember always that no matter how youdo in the examinations, you have already beenblessed. You have grown into fine young men andwomen, mature, thoughtful and kind, always readyto extend a helping hand. You have learnt to rise asyou fall and smile away your tears of pain. You’vebecome strong individuals with an unwavering con-viction of what is right. Remember, too, that you’llalways be happy and that it takes very little to behappy and that as long as you can carry your bandof friends and family in your heart, you will haveall the armour you need to take on the world.

So study hard, but don’t tear your heartout. Memorize the melting temperature for icecream, but don’t scream your lungs out.

And best of luck.

At the All-Assam Basketball Tournament heldat Guwahati in December, 2010, the AVS Girls’team reached the semi-final round, while the AVSBoys’ team defeated Jorhat district and achievedthe fifth place in the tournament.

PEACE – NOT JUST THE ABSENCE OF WAR- Ms. Anusha Sharma- Ms. Anusha Sharma- Ms. Anusha Sharma- Ms. Anusha Sharma- Ms. Anusha Sharma

THE BRITISH SCHOOL, New Delhi, hostedthe Round Square Peace Summit whichcommenced with the mandatory flag

hoisting on the 19th of January, 2011. The keynotespeaker for the day was the very suave andconvincing Mr. Suhel Seth, who in his openingaddress said, “This Peace Summit is not meantto talk about the advantages of peace but thepresence of harmony.” In a simple statement thesignificant yet rudimentary message of peace wasgiven. This stated that in each human there residesboth good and evil; a capacity to love and to hateand with each step that we take we make a choice. In the end, it all comes down to actions, passiveor active.

Peace being the “unity of harmony, serenity, equality and satisfaction”, the summitfocused on five major activity areas whichcomprised music, dance, drama, art and debate. Each of these were managed by key facilitatorswho were experts in their fields. The AVSdelegates participated in debates (Mrinal Koijam),drama (Nishi Agarwalla), music (Chaity Sarkar)and art (Daksha Salam). The entire Conferencewas activity based, thus making the hands-onlearning experience extremely exciting.

Sharon Lowen, the famous danseuse, conducted the workshop which culminated in anOdissi representation of the famous song, WeAre The World. The drama workshop by theworld famous Neil Farrelly resulted in a shortplay which very strongly propagated peace inthe world. In unison and with tremendous élan, the choir sang about joy and peace in the worldand explored the acapella techniques of makingalternate music without instruments. Tom Woodand his group were the most popular as theydesigned two exquisite murals painted in acrylic

on wood in a short span of two days under theaegis of a Global Art Programme. They alsofacilitated free expression of peace on canvas andthrough the idea of peace on white umbrellas, which the delegates loved to do. In the arena ofdebating, profound viewpoints were presentedon Media As Perpetrators Of Crime Or CrusadersOf Peace and discussions about whether TheSearch For Personal Identity Endangered The CauseOf Global Peace were held. The added excitementwas the interactive session following the debateswherein reputed people from the media anddiplomats discussed with the audience andclarified doubts. There was also a servicesegment where the delegates danced, played andsang along with their somewhat less privilegedbrethren.

While participating in these workshops, people who initially did not know one anotherbroke out of their comfort zones and got toknow each other. At the end, staff and studentsalike were seen frenetically exchanging mail idsand contact numbers for future reference. TheConference was indeed a wonderful exposure toa multi-cultural ambience where, together, wedefinitely grow stronger and learn to live in peaceand harmony.
