ASSEMBLAGEAbrief look at the art world, from lens to brush and installation.

Melbourne artist Robert Rooney’s paintings, based

on children’s imagery, and suburban photographs

have earned him acclaim in Australia since the ’60s.

For the first time, the Centre for Contemporary

Photography, Melbourne, is exhibiting a series

of Rooney’s photographs taken during his

university years (including The Quadrangle, below).

The Box Brownie Years 1956-58 is on from 3 April

to 19 May. (03) 9417 1549; ccp.org.au.

Often inspired by his children’s drawings,

Sydney artist Todd Hunter’s frenzied oils, fuelled

by the music of Nick Cave and Tom Waits, have been

compared to the voluptuous gestures of Peter Paul

Rubens and the figures of Francis Bacon. His latest

show (featuring Idiot Wind, right) is at Scott Livesey

11QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS

ACHIEVEMENT: Singer-songwriter Iva Davies.

Salute to our great southernmanIVA DAVIESAM

IT IS one of Australia’s de-fining modern songs.Yet as Iva Davies is recog-

nised in the Queen’s BirthdayHonours for his contributionto our cultural psyche withGreat Southern Land and hisenduring Icehouse songbook,he has revealed it was a

surprise success. Also madea Member of the Order ofAustralia for his work withcharities including the Sal-vation Army, Davies said heremembered he was shockedby the reaction to the song.He had just returned to

Australia from the band’s firstinternational tour and got towork on the next album, when hewrote the songwhilewearing headphones in his

Leichhardt home to drownout the noise of the planesand buses. While his team were blown

away by the ambitious piece, releasing it as a single was agreat risk because it went formore than five minutes. ‘‘Thefirst playback was on 2JJ andafter George Wayne playedit, there was this massivesilence and then he groanedand said ‘I don’t know about

that.’ I was absolutely gut-ted,’’ Davies said. ‘‘Up untilthe millennium I was moreassociated with Electric Bluebut for some reason afterthat, Great Southern Landcame on fire again.’’Icehouse continues to play

to packed houses and Daviesis considering the possibilityof another record. But the AM award also has

him casting his mind back, to

playing oboe in the orchestrafor the first opera staged atthe Sydney Opera House. And then to playing in acovers band on Friday nightswhile juggling cleaning jobs.‘‘It is quite surreal as I still

imagine myself 30-odd yearsago in a covers band on aFriday night, which was agreat life but I had to keepmy cleaning job for a longtime,’’ he said.

between Mr George and Geraldine Cox,a champion of children’s welfare inCambodia, who needed help running herSunrise Children’s Villages charity. The MGA Insurance Brokers’ chair-

man soon committed his time to thecause, helping the nation recover fromPol Pot’s murderous Khmer Rougeregime of the 1970s.

MENTAL health services reformerBarbara Wieland has been awarded theAO for 40 years of distinguished serviceto public administration in the sector.Ms Wieland left Health SA last year.

She had a key role in establishing thefirst public mental health service Con-sumer Advisory Group. She also devel-oped the only metropolitan AdelaideAboriginal Mental Health liaison pro-gram with indigenous peer workers.

BILL Jamieson has spentmore than 50 years in surflifesaving. But the Christies Beach

man remains modest abouthis contribution to the surfcommunity.Today, he is awarded a Medal of the

Order of Australia (OAM).He became involved in surf lifesaving

at age 15 and he has since held a raftof positions including Surf Life SavingSA president. He is also an Onkaparingacouncillor. VISUAL: Fiona Hall collects objects for her art. Picture: NATALIE ROBERTSON

Honouricing onthe cakefor artistFIONA HALLAO

TIM LLOYDARTS WRITER

FIONA Hall is a bit vague aboutwhich particular honour has beenbestowed upon her.‘‘It is an honour,’’ she said. ‘‘I

suppose most people who get aletter inviting them to receive a –I don’t even knowwhat I’m getting.I think it’s an Order of Australia;is that right?‘‘Like most people who get invi-

tations to receive one, they comeout of the blue. It’s an honour butI suppose since they come out ofthe blue it doesn’t really change thecourse of your life. It’s a bit of icingon the cake, I suppose.’’Hall does not comfortably fit the

bill as an artist. She has won noArchibald prizes for portraits, andher work can find expression in amultitude of ways that make herhard to categorise. But most people would recog-

nise her sculptures embossed onsardine can lids. They are often themost finely-crafted relief minia-tures of scenes, from the idyllic tothe pornographic, and snapped upby collectors around the world.

She has gained her Officer (AO)in the general division of the OrderOf Australia ‘‘for distinguished ser-vice to the visual arts as a painter, sculptor and photographer, and toart education’’.Born in Sydney, Hall, 60, has

based herself in Adelaide for manyyears. She first trained as a photo-graphic artist but gradually movedtoward a process of transformingeveryday materials into extraord-inary objects. In particular she has worked

with museums and museum scien-tists to develop grand series ofworks that pursue her interests –often an intersection of environ-ment, politics and exploitation. She has works in all the national

and state art galleries and somemuseums in Australia, and the rarehonour of a retrospective of aliving artist has been paid to herby state art galleries including theArt Gallery of SA in 2005.Hall said she believed her rec-

ognition in the honours list wouldbe good for the arts as a whole.‘‘I do think it does make a

difference to people in the arts andto the arts generally to have rec-ognition,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s alwaysdifficult for the arts to get air timein the media and in the publicmind.’’

1n 2011 Fiona Hall, who is regarded as one of the mostinfluential and critically acclaimed artists workingtoday, joined a group of New Zealand artists aboard

the New Zealand naval ship Otago. They travelled fromAuckland to Raoul Island in the Kermadec Group, then toTonga, following the 1000-kilometre-long Kermadec Trench

- the second deepest oceanic trench in the world. Filledwith active undersea volcanoes and populated by manyas-yet undiscovered species, the Kermadec Trench is oneof the world's last relatively untouched wilderness areas.

Pew Environment Group funded the voyage, and theartists travelled with the specific aim of convincing theNew Zealand Government to declare the Kermadec Trencha marine reserve, protecting it from the imminent threatof mining and fishing.

Since then the resulting exhibitions have taken on alife of their own, first opening in Tauranga then travellingto Auckland, Wellington and Santiago. This summer onewill tour to the Navy Museum in Devonport.

For Hall, whose love of nature and close scrutiny ofthe natural world is manifest in her interdisciplinary artpractice, the voyage was a watershed. Until then herart had been mostly land-based. After the voyage sheturned her penetrating gaze seawards. It also marked thebeginning of her use of Tongan barkcloth as a substratefor large, eerily beautiful paintings populated by the sealife of the Kermadec Group.

On board Otago Hall became good friends with NewZealand artist Robin White, who has a long history ofworking with barkcloth and whose recent exhibitionof large barkcloth works at Two Rooms resulted from acollaboration between White and Tongan New ZealanderRuha Fifita. After the voyage Hall met Fifita in Tonga, andfrom her, learned the rudiments of preparing and paintingon barkcloth (called tapa throughout the Pacific), usingtraditional ochres and dyes.

"My way of working with the medium is very differentfrom the Tangan one, and the traditional practice across the

Pacific," says Hall. "I'm using it to paint in a comparativelyWestern way. So there wasn't a need for me to learn aboutthe kupesi process."

In the elegaic paintings, made after the voyage, Halldivided the pictorial space into grids, containing fragmentsof text (including the words "On your watch Mr Key, whichside are you on?") and images of Kermadec species. Thisgave the works the feeling of protest banners, which inmany ways they are.

In Ghost Net, 2011, Hall imagines the future of theKermadec Trench if it's not protected. The skeletal formsof animals are hopelessly entangled in 'ghost nets' - lostor abandoned nets that drift in the ocean indiscriminatelyensnaring and killing sea life as they go. Scrimshaw, 2011,is like a catalogue of ships, ranging from a European

sailing ship and a Polynesian canoe to modern warshipsand factory fishing vessels. The skeleton of a whaleis contained within the shape of a coffin; a skull andcrossbones in the top right corner serve as a warning andan allusion to piracy.

Scrimshaw and Spill, both painted in 2011, were Hall'sresponse to the grounding of the container ship Rena onAstrolabe Reef in Tauranga, which happened only monthsafter the artists' voyage. "For all of us on the Kermadectrip, Rena was a very timely reminder of the issues wewere dealing with, and the show opened first in Tauranga, the port city close to where the disaster happened. Butthat wasn't enough to remind your government of the truedanger and risks of offering mining permits to companieswanting to mine the area," she says.

Despite the undoubted success of the Kermadecexhibition in raising public awareness of the need toprotect the area, the main goal, which was to convince

the government to declare it a marine reserve, hasn't been

achieved. In that context, I asked Hall if she thinks art can

be an effective political tool?"Yes it can be, but it's mostly like litmus paper in that

it detects and brings to the forefront the issues of the day- there are many historical precedents. Whether it changes

the course of events in a major way, I'm not sure. It shows

up some of the agendas, bringing them to attention - andbecause the arts are at the vanguard, it's always a bit ahead

of the game. The litmus paper shows up what the game is,although it may not persuade governments or dictators ordespots to change an agenda."

Two years after the Kermadec voyage, the wood grainpattern on the coffin in Scrimshaw re-appears in the recent

series of paintings made during her Two Rooms residency

earlier this year. An exhibition of these works, titledVeneer, will open at the gallery in late August. The titleis metaphorically rich when you consider wood veneeris a byproduct of trees and forests, which are a shrinkingresource, and the fact that veneer is also associated withsuperficiality and concealment.

Though they're also painted on barkcloth I made from the

bark of the paper mulberry tree) the recent works are very

different from the Kermadec works. Rather than addressing

a specific environment, these paintings are more universal

in scope - and more angry, expressionistic and intuitive. Hall

is looking at the wider picture of environmental destructionand loss of habitat, and the role humans play - with ourpropensity for conflict and warfare - in this unfoldingdisaster, which will eventually affect us all.

"The Kermadec work was all Kermadec driven," sheexplains. "The current work is coming from a very differentpsychological place, although, like much of my recent work,

it refers to the demise of the natural world, and also to the

mix of politics at large with environmental politics. Politics

at large too often means warfare. Over the last few yearsI've been working a lot with military camouflage patterns

and garments in several contexts - they are indicators ofnations participating in skirmishes across the world. Thoseissues are still driving some of my current work, but inother work, including the paintings I'm doing for the TwoRooms residency, the work is less attached to specificpolitical agendas, and coming more from an emotionalresponse to the state of play in a world which many ofus would agree is a fairly calamitous place. You could sayit always has been, in all sorts of ways. Humans seem tobe hard-wired for conflict."

Hall says in the recent paintings she wanted to bypassthe stringently logical thought processes underpinningearlier work and to tap into a more subjective andemotional register. In one work, Take No Prisoners, aworld map is crumpled and torn, seemingly caught in theact of being unfolded. Its surface is covered with blotchesand stains, which seem indistinguishable from the soft, blurred shapes of continents and islands. Latitudinal andlongitudinal lines are bent and warped, adding to the senseof contagion and disorder.

"Maps are quite beautiful when they're unfolding. You see all the fold marks and the undulations of themap along with the undulations of the territory thatis depicted," she says. "In this work there are a fewholes and a couple of skulls, and the one in Africa isof a chimpanzee. There's the widely acknowledgedevolutionary theory that we all came out of Africa andshare the majority of our genetic makeup with otherprimates - so in that work there's a specific logic, but youwouldn't have to know that to respond to the painting."

The skulls, which morph in and out of the map and thewood grain background, carry a similar sense of horror asEdvard Munch's famous painting The Scream of Nature,1893, in which a figure with an agonised expression isseen against a landscape with a tumultuous orange sky. While walking along a path at sunset, the Norwegianexpressionist painter saw the clouds turn blood red abovethe dark blue fjord below him. Writing of the experiencethat sparked the painting, he said: "I sensed an infinitescream passing through nature".

Like Munch, Hall seems to have sensed this screamand in these paintings we can hear its echo and feel herdespair at the current state of the world. "It's an emotive, angry response, but also cynical and sorrowful," she says.

A similar emotional intensity can be felt in herinstallation Fall Prey, a commissioned work made lastyear for dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel, Germany. Fall Preycomprised a rag-tag menagerie of critically endangeredspecies constructed from military camouflage garmentsand worthless discarded objects from the species' countryof origin. These creatures, which appeared like trophies

mounted on the wooden walls of a hunter's hut, weresourced from The International Union for the Conservationof Nature's (IUCN) register of endangered species, including a Californian Condor and a Mexican Axolotl.

As always the craftsmanship in these works isexceptional, as is the connection between Hall's choiceof materials and the subjects driving the work.

This year Fall Prey formed the core of Hall's surveyexhibition Big Game Hunting, shown at Heide Museumof Modern Art in Bulleen, Victoria.

In David Hansen's catalogue essay for Big GameHunting he discusses her use of camouflage: "... themilitary fabric is not in fact singular, but a complex ifcompact triple trope, which embodies conflict, plantecology and disappearance. In her presentation ofcamouflage as this three-headed allegorical device, we canbegin to see both the distinctiveness and the distinctionof Hall's practice: its multivalence, its vegetal energy, itsreaching branches and rhizomic meanders, its wondering, wandering, ambitious and generous expansiveness. Or toshift to another corner of the camouflage triad, she is notcontent with the one clear shot, but employs the rapidfire of a fully automatic assault weapon."

Hall's recent barkcloth paintings are no exception.Although the subject matter of these works could not bemore serious, their earthy sensuality and tactile beautymakes them dangerously seductive. For Hall, beauty is alure, used to stop us in our tracks and alert us to a painfulreality - human destiny is inseparable from that of thenatural world. These paintings will certainly do that.

Fiona Hall's exhibition Veneer is at 71vo Rooms, Newton,Auckland, from 2.3 August to 28 September 201.3.
