Many existing Superba heatset lines are equipped with the older hot water bath type prebulkers with inherent scaling problems (often requiring descaling every 3-4 months) and do not have fans to increase heat penetration. Epic units increase prebulking efficiency as part of increasing total line speed and productivity. Epic Prebulkers use fan-delivered, live steam to speed prebulking efficiency. The steam is brought to the yarn through a bottom-mounted tray in the housing and is then reclaimed through a manifold system. The Epic unit provides the same function as the latest Superba HEP Prebulker design but is much lower in cost. Epic construction is stainless steel in the chamber and manifold.

The Epic Prebulker is equipped with a 4-20 milliamp micro-processor unit that controls steam flow and temperature. Temperature is sensed with a dual element resistance temperature probe. The micro-processor control unit can be connected to an existing Superba computer control system, to an Epic computer control system or can be operated independently.

Maintenance and part replacement is negligible. After very long service, it is possible that a steam valve, controller or valve may have to be replaced. Parts are available from Epic.

The Epic Prebulker is furnished with assembly and operation instructions as well as a complete wiring diagram. Customer must specify voltage.

The 200mm Wide Epic Prebulker is EE150100. The 260mm Wide Unit is Epic Prebulker EE150200.

Cool-out fans are used immediately after the Prebulker to eliminate heat and moisture in the yarn before it goes into the heatset tunnel. They are also used after exit from the heatset tunnel to provide a cool, dry yarn prior to winding. Older Superba cool-out fans were satisfactory only for very slow processing speeds. Some of the components of the Superba cool-out fan systems are sheet steel and subject to rusting. The Epic System is





stainless steel.

Epic Cool-Out Turbine Fans move approximately twice the amount of cooling air through the yarn so it is possible to nearly double speed capabilities. The Epic System has an expanded stainless grid guard to assist in preventing yarn choking of the fan. The Epic System fits both 200mm and 260mm wide band units. The fan units are equipped with OSHA-approved lockout switches. Epic Cool-Out Fan Systems are 100% stainless.

The Epic system comes with installation and operating instructions and a wiring schematic. Customer must specify line voltage so that the correct motor is installed.

The system is very low maintenance. Occasionally, a replacement 12" stainless fan or 3/4HP (0.5KW) motor may need to be replaced. Parts are available from Epic.

Older Superba Power Transformer Units were equipped with a hand pump to create sufficient hydraulic pressure to effect a seal on the heads at both entry and exit ends of the machine. At start-up, it often can take one-two hours or more to create the seal by hand pumping. The original hydraulic and air system needed to initiate or break the seal ran the full length of the machine and was subject to leaks, line breakage, etc.

The complete Epic Hydraulic System EE150300 has two air driven pumps mounted outboard of the line immediately adjacent to the sealing heads. By actuation of the lever in the Epic system the seal can be made on start-up in approximately 10 seconds. The Epic system is similar to Superba's hydraulic system used on the most recent 2S machine and is comparatively very low in cost.

The Epic Dual End System includes two outboard hydraulic systems, mounting brackets, and metering valve distribution blocks. The hydraulic outputs can be connected to existing hydraulic jack lines. The system comes complete with installation and operation instructions as well as a piping diagram. Desired air pressure supplied to the System is 40-60 psi or 3-4 BAR. System maintenance is extremely low. Over an extended period of time, an air pump, valve or gauge may have to be replaced. Parts are available from Epic.

Cooling zones are employed immediately prior to entry into the heatsetting zone and immediately after exit from the heatsetting zone to cool the yarn. Early Superbas came only with an entry end 0.5 meter cooling zone, but did have an exit 2.0 meter cooling zone. Trials proved that better yarn could be produced at a higher speed with longer cooling zones. Early Superba machines are most typically upgraded by adding a 1.5 meter extension to the 0.5 meter entry cooling zone or replacing it with a 2 meter entry cooling zone. Some yarns benefit from even longer 3.0 meter entry and exit zones. The 1.5 and 2.0 meter cooling zones include three Epic EE102004 stainless steel roller assemblies. The 3.0 includes four.

Air in the cooling zone is cooled by chilled water passing through finned stainless cooling coils. Cooling coils fit Epic/Signal cooling zones and are readily adapted to Superba machines.

Handway Blowers may be fitted to the entry and exit cooling zones of the heatset line at the handway flanges on all tunnels. The cooling zones are cooled by forcing chilled water through the cooling coils within the tunnel. Earlier Superbas were not equipped with these blowers so that the only circulation of cool air was caused by normal air usage needed to pressurize the Superba tunnels. By adding Handway Blowers to the cooling zone ports, the blowers rapidly recirculate the chilled air to provide better cooling, better yarn quality and faster processing speeds or greater productivity.

The Epic/Signal Blowers may readily be installed on cooling zones supplied by both Superba and Epic/Signal.

The drive motor is 220/440V AC. The unit is relatively low maintenance but occasionally parts such as bearings or bushings may need to be replaced.

Older Superbas were equipped with a very bulky Center Electric Console Unit using DC motor controllers and DC switchgear. The DC components in the Console are largely outdated and almost impossible to obtain in the event of a break-down. The old system also meant in a dual tunnel system that both tunnels had to be shut down.

The Epic Motor Control Center is much smaller and uses simplified, state-of-the-art AC variable speed motor controllers that are readily available from electric supply houses. The Epic Center controls one tunnel, thus separating two tunnel units and allowing each tunnel to operate independently. The complete Motor Control Center is Epic part number EE150400.

The control panel measures 4'x5'x 20" (100x125x500mm) and contains 3 transistor invertors as 2-1.5 HP (1KW) invertors for the prefeed and coiler units and 1-3HP (2KW) invertor for the belt drive. Also included is an M40 Programmable Controller (PLC) for interfacing the motor controls with the computer control system (Epic or Superba). The unit is complete and includes wiring, wire tray, conduit, relays, overload switches, contactors, terminal strips, etc.

The unit is furnished with wiring instructions, schematics and the PLC program. Customer must specify voltage information so that the correct voltage components may be included.

The system is almost maintenance free. Replacement electrical controls are readily available from electrical distributors. In the event that the M40 Programmable Logic Center fails or the memory is lost, Epic can supply the Logic Center or can reprogram it either by return to Epic or by modem.

CBS RECIRCULATING BLOWER SYSTEMS are offered for the original six meter heatset tunnel and the full nine meter heatset tunnel. These two systems are identical except in the length of the return exterior mounted hot air tube. Both fit Superba machines.

The fan drive motor is 220/440V. The system is supplied with installation and operating instructions. CBS entry and exit manifolds are included with the system. Manifolds must be installed in tunnels by a certified ASME shop. Epic/Signal can arrange installation of manifolds. Please call for details.





The system takes the hot air from the exit heatsetting zone, where air temperature would be the highest, via the 16" (406mm) fan and returns it to the entry heatsetting zone. As the hot air re-enters the entry heating zone, it is forced upward through a stainless air distribution tray and through the yarn being carried on the transport belt. The effect is that the yarn receives full and near uniform heatset temperature for the entire length of the heatset tunnel. The system allows the plant to run a greater yarn mass on the belt at higher speeds to increase productivity.

Signal originally produced the OptiBulk Prebulker and an upgrade of the Superba prebulker known as EX Top or EZ Conversion. Recent installations now use the more efficient Epic Prebulker (see section on Epic Prebulker).





Because many of the original Signal Prebulkers are in service, Epic offers the spare parts for Optibulk and EZ Top or EZ Conversion.
