    ASSESSMENT PACKET: DEMONSTRATION

    1. Required peripherals for each port

    Serial port

Serial ports can be used to connect a mouse, keyboard or external modem. They senddata one bit at a time and are good for sending information over long distances.

    Parallel port

This port is used to send of lot of data over a short distance. Printers often use parallelports.

    Uniersal serial !"s #US$% port

USB Ports are now gradually replacing serial and parallel ports. These devices are hotswappable! meaning that devices can be plugged while the computer has been turnedon. USB ports can also be located on the front of a computer!s system unit. USB portsare used for printers, scanners, "oysticks and digital cameras.

    &ire'ire port

This is a more recent port, ## times faster than a USB port. $t is typically used for videocameras and often need the installation of an internal adapter card.

The keyboard, mouse and monitor can also have their own designated ports

    . !roblem" #an$t #onnect to the Internet %er&ice !ro&ider

    Sol"tions:

-ake sure your modem is switched on and connected to a live phone line. $f necessary

refer to your modem5s user manual. -ake sure your connection software is configured properly. $f necessary, refer to the

original setup instructions, or call your provider5s customer service number. 9ou might be having trouble with your phone line. Before attempting a connection, make

sure that all phones on the line are hung up, and check for a dial tone. 9ou mayexperience problems if your modem is AconnectedA to your phone line by way of a radiobased phone extension. 2hile ade/uate for voice communications, these extendersusually do not provide a connection that is clean enough *noisefree+ for digitatransmissions.

The problem might not be on your end, but might lie with the service provider. ften, if

too many users are logged on to a provider5s system, the provider will not permitadditional connections. lso, the provider might be performing system maintenance*though most providers try to do such work during AoffA hours to minimi4e disruption+. $fyou believe this to be the case, try connecting again until you establish a connection, ortry another Apoint of presenceA phone number for your provider.

ASSESSMENT PACKET: ORA ;UESTIONINowever, if you cancel your account before thecontract is up, the provider might charge you a penalty. lso, make sure that yourservice provider is stable and reliable before committing to a longtermagreement, particularly if you are re/uired to pay up front.

)ependable access&The ability to establish a connection during peak hours hasbecome an important issue as more people go online. good service providerobviously, should have few busy signals and minimal downtime.

Dood customer support&$f you call with a /uestion concerning your account atan odd hour, will your call be takenE 2ill your 3mail /ueries be answeredE Thema"or providers usually have excellent customer support, but smaller outfits mayoffer little or no support services. lso be alert to premiums charged for supportcalls.

Proprietary services&merica nline, Prodigy and %ompuServe all have their

own databases, conference centers and chat rooms not available on the $nterneor any other service. ther service providers offer nothing more than a straightconnection to the $nternet.

6estricted access&Providers can often determine what $nternet services theywill provide. Cor example, some will carry only selected newsgroups. Providers

that lack such restrictions often advertise their AuncensoredA and AunrestrictedAaccess.

    3. Internet connection option

%able $nternet&These systems allow your computer to connect to the $nternet

through the same cable that carries your TF signal. -onthly service charges areusually not much more than standard modem connection costs, but you have torent or purchase a Acable modem.A dditionally, your computer will need an3thernet card *a special circuit board that allows for network connections+. 8ot alcable service operators offer this serviceG call your local operator for moreinformation.

Satellite connections&)irecP% *http011www.direcpc.com1+ allows you todownload $nternet files via a satellite connection. This is an efficient method forreceiving large 2eb graphics and other items, but you still need a modemconnection for other features. 9ou must purchase the connection hardware aswell as subscribe to the service.

The connection is madethrough a custom highspeed modem. 9ou must purchase a special settop unitfor your TF, plus subscribe to the connection service. 6ecently, similar systemsby other manufacturers have appeared on the market to compete with 2ebTF.

    4. +inimal disruption to the client

Schedule sufficient time to completely install and testperipheral.

Try and organise a time outside regular organisationaltasks.

Try to ensure that client will not be at the computer *forexample holiday periods, while out of office, before or afteroffice hours+.

    5. What are dri&ers,

2henever you install a hardware peripheral device, you will also have to install adriver. driver is a software program that allows the hardware device to talk to

the operating system. Denerally, driver software will be included within thepackaging of a new device. Sometimes operating systems, such as 2indows IPautomatically provide their own drivers if you don!t provide one. t times it maybe necessary to find a newer version of a driver than the one that has beenprovided by the manufacturer. $t is a good idea to regularly check themanufacturer!s website to see if any new drivers have been developed.

    . #hoosing a supplier
