ASSESSMENT

Page 2: Assessment Presentation

what is assessment of learning? Assessment...

...is the systematic, on-going, iterative process of monitoring learning in order to determine what we are doing well and what we must improve.

Assessment involves observing, describing, collecting, recording, scoring, and interpreting information.

Assessment or Evaluation? The term assessment refers to the systematic gathering of information about component parts of the thing to be evaluated. The evaluation process is broader than assessment

and involves examining information about many components of the thing being evaluated and making judgments about its worth and effectiveness.

Assessment is effective when it... is student centered is congruent with instructional objectives is relevant is comprehensiveis clear (in purpose, directions, expectations) is objective and fair simulates "end" behavior/product/performance incites active responses shows progress/development over time

what is assessment of learning?

Relationship between objectives and assessmentInstructional objectives are statements of desired learning outcomes; they describe skills, behaviors, or attitudes that learners should be able to demonstrate after instruction. Assessment is the process by which it is determined whether students have acquired the skills/behaviors/attitudes reflected in the objectives. Thus, the development of objectives should precede the decisions about what and how to assess.

Goals vs. Objectives vs. Outcomes

Goals = broad, general, long-range statements of educational purpose.

Objectives = brief statements that describe desired learning results intended outcomes. Also called competencies, abilities.

Outcomes = achieved results; behaviors/products generated by learners.

Test DesignDesigning Assessment Tools: questions to ask yourself.

Is the tool the best type of assessment to determine if the learners have mastered the objectives?

Does the tool give students the opportunity to demonstrate all expected outcomes?

Do the items ask the students to demonstrate the exact skills/behaviors specified in the objectives?

Is the tool easy to use and understand? Are directions clear, unambiguous, and consistent?

Is the tool valid (measures what it is supposed to)?

Is the tool reliable (leads to same results over time)?

Summative vs. Formative

Evaluation is a summative process, whereas assessment is a formative one.

The purpose of formative assessments is to provide feedback to students as they progress toward a goal. If this feedback is of a high quality, improvement in student performance can result.

Summative processes have more of a gate-keeping function. For example, student applications to college are evaluated using a summative process and students are either accepted or rejected via this process.

In the classroom, teachers use formative assessment on a daily basis, and then use the more summative “evaluation” to recommend report card marks at the end of a grading period. Unfortunately, the final evaluation, the “grade,” can only be as good as the assessment information which was collected.

Assessment

Assessment provides feedback on how learning and teaching are going.

• Multiple intelligences

• Learning styles

• Emotional intelligence

Remember, each one of our students is different from the rest. We must consider several factors when assessing our students learning.

Consider the following when choosing among the various types of assessment available:
