ASSESSMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ASSESSOR

Students must answer all questions and meet all assessment criteria for each unit for satisfactory

completion of each assessment task within the workbook. Assessors are reminded that the questions

within the workbook are to be completed under test conditions yet students are able to refer to their

manual thus each of these assessments are „open book‟ unless otherwise stated on the cover of the

assessment.

Assessors are required to read each answer in written assessments and identify if the learner has

answered it correctly by placing a tick with a red pen next to the answer in the allocated space. It

should be kept in mind that although model answers are provided, assessors can also mark an answer

as correct if the student demonstrates an understanding with an industry appropriate and correct

answer in relation to the question/topic. Where legislative knowledge and specific wording is required

for an answer this may not always be appropriate.

If the student does not answer a question correctly, the assessor should identify the error with a red pen,

and provide feedback as students may wish to examine why their answers were incorrect at a later

date.

All role-play criteria should be talked through with students so that they are aware of exactly how they

will be assessed. Comments should be made in the comments section on specific actions that the

student completed that were deemed either satisfactory or not satisfactory. It is reminded that

individual assessment tasks are marked as either satisfactory or not satisfactory. Once all required

assessment tasks are completed to a satisfactory standard the student can then be found Competent

for the specific unit.

Assessors should make a note of any recommended changes to either questions or answers and discuss

these changes with the Training Manager or Compliance Manager at their Training Organisation. It is

expected and required that each assessor understands the requirements of the specific units they are

assessing. For further information on unit requirements assessors should look at the current unit guides

located at www.training.gov.au.

Assessors should also meet with their Training Manager for support in understanding assessments,

resources and training requirements for the unit(s) of competency. Professional development

opportunities may also be discussed at this time

As with all assessment, the assessor must be confident that the evidence indicates that the student is

currently competent against the endorsed unit of competency. The evidence for each unit collected

may take a variety of forms and each specific assessment task for a unit can be clearly seen on the Unit

Result Record Sheets. In judging a student‟s assessment tasks/evidence, the assessor must ensure that

the evidence is:

• authentic (the candidate‟s own work);

• valid (directly related to the current version of the relevant endorsed unit of competency);

• reliable (shows that the candidate consistently meets the endorsed unit of competency);

• current (reflects the candidate‟s current capacity to perform the aspect of the work covered by the

endorsed unit of competency); and

• sufficient (covers the full range of elements in the relevant unit of competency).

After each question, you will see letters and number e.g. (CA 10). This number relates back to what

performance criteria, required skills, required knowledge and critical aspects are outlined in the

relevant unit.

Example:

Question 1 (PC 1.1)

KEY:

PC = performance criteria and the respective number

RS = required skill

RK = required knowledge

CA = critical aspect

Trainers/Assessors should make note of the below Assessment Instructions for the Student as provided

with the student assessment workbook.

Each point must be discussed with students at the beginning of the course with any clarification

required to be completed before any assessment tasks are undertaken. Once this has taken place

Trainers/Assessors must ensure that students clearly record their name and sign where required stating

they understand the assessment instructions and requirements and consent to being assessed

according to the assessment requirements explained through the wording below and as part of the

course induction.

Assessment Instructions for the Student Assessment by completing questions within this workbook:

This booklet contains assessment questions and activities which will allow you to provide evidence

toward gaining each Unit of Competency and the full qualification. If you have been able to

demonstrate competence through credit transfer or recognition of prior learning for any unit(s) then

your Trainer/Assessor will advise you of which questions and/or activities for particular unit(s) that you will

not need to complete.

All assessment tasks have been developed:

(a) to meet the requirements of the relevant Training Package; and

(b) to be conducted in accordance with the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence; and

(c) to meet workplace and, where relevant, regulatory requirements; and

(d) in line with systematic validation.

Assessments have been developed to collect evidence that is in line with the principles of assessment

and the rules of evidence and are:

Authentic (the candidate‟s own work);

Valid (directly related to the current version of the relevant endorsed unit of competency);

Reliable (shows that the candidate consistently meets the endorsed unit of competency);

Current (reflects the candidate‟s current capacity to perform the aspect of the work covered

by the endorsed unit of competency); and

Sufficient (covers the full range of elements in the relevant unit of competency).

Demonstrating Competency

To demonstrate competence you must complete all assessment tasks to a satisfactory level in line with

the above principles of assessment and the rules of evidence. Each task is linked to specific

competency performance criteria, element/s, required knowledge and skills and critical aspects of

assessment as outlined in the current training package. Employability skills are also covered as part of

this qualification as outlined in the current training package. Once all assessment tasks are completed

to a satisfactory level your trainer will then deem you to be Competent for the specific unit.

Assessment Task Length

Where space/lines have been provided for addressing an assessment task, you should be guided as to

the length of your answer by the space provided. If more space/lines are required, you should attach a

separate page containing your name with the assessment task name clearly indicated. Your

trainer/assessor will always be available to check with if you are unsure or if you need additional paper.

Reasonable Adjustment

Inclusive practice is a key component used by Trainers/Assessors within each class, with

Trainers/Assessors using a range of teaching strategies to meet individual needs, and provide learning

experiences that: take into account differing learning styles or preferences, recognise the differences

among learners and ensure no one is excluded.

Reasonable Adjustment is used, where appropriate, for assessment tasks within this course to ensure that

all learners are given the same learning opportunities and the same opportunity to perform and

complete assessments. Where Reasonable Adjustment of assessment tasks takes place within this

course your Trainers/Assessor will clearly record on each assessment task how this has taken place. As

part of this process any Reasonable Adjustment will ensure that the same level of knowledge and skills

are demonstrated for all students as required by both the Unit of Competency and the Industry.

Assessment/Re-assessment Requirements

If you are deemed Not Yet Satisfactory on the first attempt at an assessment task your Trainer/Assessor,

where appropriate, may choose to verbally assess you to gather further evidence of your knowledge of

specific question/s and/or criterion. In this situation your Trainer/Assessor would make note of this on your

assessment task including notes on what answers you provided.

Where you are unable to demonstrate the required level of knowledge and skills through an assessment

task you will have the opportunity to either re-attempt the entire original assessment task, undertake a

supplementary assessment, add information to the original assessment (where deemed appropriate by

your Trainer/Assessor), or appeal the result.

If after this re-attempt you are still unable to demonstrate the required level of knowledge and skills you

will again be deemed Not Yet Satisfactory for the individual assessment task and will be found to be Not

Yet Competent for the specific Unit/s of Competency in which the specific assessment task is required.

If you are deemed Not Yet Competent your trainer / assessor will guide you on the re-assessment

process which may include being offered the opportunity to re-sit through the theory component of the

Unit of Competency where you have been found to be Not Yet Competent and then be given the

opportunity to either re-attempt the entire original assessment task/s, add information to the original

assessment/s (where deemed appropriate by your Trainer / Assessor) or undertake a supplementary

assessment.

Where it is deemed appropriate by your Trainer / Assessor that you may add information to the original

assessment task/s this will be clearly recorded by your Trainer/Assessor on the front marking sheet with

the first attempt being deemed Not Yet Satisfactory and the re-attempt result being recorded in the re-

assessed section.

As part of the assessment process all students must abide by any relevant assessment policies as

provided during the enrolment process and induction.

Instructions to the Student

Please read all the information given to you before you start any assessment task. If you do not

understand some or all of the questions, please ask your Trainer / Assessor for assistance.

If you are uncomfortable with any of these questions, please contact your assessor who will make

alternative arrangements where appropriate.

Attempt to answer ALL questions in your own words (unless otherwise directed) on the assessment paper

provided.

All assessments are intended to be equitable, fair and flexible. If you feel that we should change any

aspect of any assessment to be fair, equitable or flexible, immediately contact your Trainer/Assessor

who will attempt to make alternative arrangements for future assessments.

Feedback and Review

At the completion of each assessment task your trainer will correct your work and then discuss the

correct answers to each question/criteria with the class giving an explanation on why each area of

knowledge is important. This review will only occur once all students have completed their work to a

satisfactory level to ensure that all aspects of assessment tasks completed are not done so with the help

of this feedback/review.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of cheating. It is taking and using someone else‟s thoughts or writings and

representing them as your own. Plagiarism is a serious act and may result in a participant‟s exclusion

from a Unit of Competency or a course. This in turn may require for students to pay to re-complete the

module or course at a later date.

The following list outlines some of the activities for which a participant can be accused of plagiarism:

Presenting any work by another individual as one‟s own unintentionally

Handing in assessments markedly similar to or copied from another student

Presenting the work of another individual or group as their own work.

Handing up assessments without the adequate acknowledgement of sources used, including

assessments taken totally or in part from the internet.

Many of the workbook activities are „open book‟ yet should still be conducted under test conditions

without consultation with other students. If you are unsure of any assessment requirements you should

check with your Trainer / Assessor.

Copyright

Whilst completing research projects/tasks you must be careful when copying the work of others. The

owner of the material may take legal action against you if the owner‟s copyright has been infringed.

You are allowed to do a certain amount of copying for research or study purposes. Generally, 10% or

one chapter of a book is acceptable, where the participant is studying with or employed by an

educational institution and they adequately acknowledge the sources used.

Please clearly record your name and sign below stating you understand the assessment instructions and

requirements and consent to being assessed according to the above mentioned assessment

requirements.

Day 1 Team Selection Brief Activity

After the completion of the RTO and course induction it will be time to select the teams for the course. The trainer will

be responsible to coordinate this exercise and may also change teams as seen fit throughout the course.

TEAM BUILDING INSTRUCTIONS:

1. The trainer will request participants to put their hand up if they would like to assume the role of team leader

for the course. If there is some reluctance the trainer shall ask if anyone has had any team leader experience

and if so there experience would be gratefully appreciated.

2. Depending on numbers in the class the following will give you a guide on team preparation.

10 students = 3 groups 2 x 3 and 1 x 4 (need a minimum of 4 volunteers)

15 students = 4 groups 1 x 3 and 3 x 4 (need a minimum of 6 volunteers)

20 students = 4 groups 4 x 5 (need a minimum of 5 volunteers)

25 students = 5 groups 5 x 5 (need a minimum of 6 volunteers)

Each group has a call sign: Team Alpha, Team Bravo, Team Charlie, Team Delta, Team Echo etc.

3. The trainer asks each team leader (volunteer) to leave the room and come back one at a time to give a 30

second talk on how they:

a. would manage their team effectively

b. would promote support and commitment

c. have handled teams in the past (experience)

The presenter is then asked to leave the room

4. Each participant will score the presenter on a rate between 1 – 5

1 = bad performance

3 = good performance

5 = excellent performance

The trainer will calculate the score by collecting them off each of the students (on the white board) and

determine the team leaders. After this is done all team leader volunteers are bought back to the class room

and advised of the outcome.

5. Each new assigned team leader (starting from alpha team) will choose their team members until all people

are chosen.

6. The trainer will instruct all students to change their seating arrangements and move into their teams. All team

members will swap names and phone numbers and spend 5 minutes to get to know each other. At the

completion of this time all team members will be introduced to the class by the team leader including their

name, past experience and other appropriate personal information.

TEAM LEADER ROLE:

Account for the late arrival of students & communicate this to the trainer

Advise the trainer of students that do not show or are sick

Ensure open communication and team commitment is occurring

Deal with discrepancies in the team with trainer support

For certain tasks the trainer may switch team leaders within groups to ensure leadership experience is gained by many

as part of the course.
