What is cinema verite?

Dictionary definition : movie that shows ordinary people in actual activities without being controlled by a director - a form of entertainment that enacts a story by sound and a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement; "they went to a movie every Saturday night"; "the film was shot on location“

My understanding : a film that shows people’s normal life style and cuts are used to show that with the connection of music and sounds.

History of cinema verite• first started in 1960’s

• Got criticized at the time due to cinematographers believing that films were becoming documentaries.

• It appeared as they want to instead of using normal shots with diagetic sound , to have interviews pictures and other elements in their movies.

• Some important names in the industry at the time were : jean rouch’s ,Ricky Leacock, Frederick wiseman , donn Pennebaker, mayseles brothers

• Accomplished using a hand held camera

How has cinema verite changed?

• Has become reality tv shows

• Uses lighter cameras

• Has influenced modern documentaries

• Developed to programs such as big brother , x factor, American idol … as its all unscripted therefore it is considered a film verite

Examples of cinema verite

The fourth kind.

Throughout the movie they show real footage and voice clips, that doesn’t revel to the audience that they are not real, leaving them to be scared.

This series follows the life of a man at his workplace the scenes are of a film verite style but also has comedy, some awkward and unusual situations, this makes the audience see him as a real person.
