    Assignment 3a

    To research, plan and produce a 2 minute trailer for a new feature film in a specific genre

    and provide a 12 page portfolio of supporting materials which provide evidence of yourjourney in producing the trailer from initial research through to finished product.

    (15 marks)

    Assignment 3b

    To film, edit and sound edit a 2 minute trailer for a new feature film including titling, musicand all the expected conventions.

    (20 marks)

    To evaluate your process in making the trailer with reference to all the key media conceptsand with extensive use of media language/terminology.

    RESEARCH - between 5-8 pages

    Analysis of the CONVENTIONS of film trailers:

    how narrative is created: through filming and editing

    use of sound: diegetic and non-diegetic, voice over/narrator, dialogue, music

    use of text on the screen: titling, credits, reviews

    How GENRE is established?

    How will you apply these conventions to what you make?

    Analyse a range of trailer: focus on specific Mise en Scene which could helpexplain/support your choices. Print screen images from a couple of the trailers youhave looked at and analyse in detail.

    Audience survey of specific film trailers Create a survey using google docs and survey your friends about what they like

    Make sure that your survey relates to the GENRE of your film trailer

    Survey them about your idea and also when you havefinished to get the AUDIENCE opinion

    Make sure your group has a production company name and logo

    Film Marketing How are films are marketed to specific audiences:

    TV adverts, posters, trailers, use of social media, magazines etc.

    Find relevant examples and explain how they have been effective

    How will you market your film? How does your trailer form part of a campaign?

    Design a poster, website or other marketing device for your film

    Representations:

    How have people, places or events been represented in the film trailers you havestudied?

    How will people places or events be represented in your film trailer?

    Focus on representations which are suitable for your trailer. For example: youngwomen in horror films; the outsider / bullied / bully; ethnic groups, age groups, socialclass, disability etc.

    Assignment 3a & 3b Tip: Do 1-2 hours aweek and you will stayon top of this. Every timeyou watch, make notesand practice using medialanguage.

    PLANNING AND PRE-PRODUCTION - between 5-8 pages

    WrittenPitch - synopsis - treatment/script

    The pitch line: 25 words or less that tells us what the film is about and excites usto know more.

    Synopsis: 1 page telling the plot of the whole film

    Treatment: Scene by scene for your trailer (no dialogue or Voice over)

    Script: detailed with exactly what you hope to see and hear in your trailer

    Visuals

    Storyboard: essential to explain how you will shoot the sequence, requiresdetails about images, action, sound and transitions. Doesnt have to be everysingle shot BUT should be a minimum of 12 frames (shots)

    Production Cast list: a description of each character, who you will cast, representation Locations: a list of all locations with some photos of the proposed locationsexplaining why you chose them

    Design: any important design decisions effecting the mise en scene, sets, props,costumes, make-up.

    Equipment list:camera, tripod, tracking(?),lighting (even if this isusing available light, or

    using hand held lamps,torches etc.)

    Schedule: create aclear plan for when andwhere you are going tofilm and in what order ofscenes/shots. The moredetail the better. Includeeverything: cast, props,costumes, set, equipmentand timings.

    Production roles:decide and agree who isdoing what on your filmtrailer: script writing,directing, camera, lighting,sets, organisation, editing,sound. You MUSTRESEARCH THESEROLES AND DECIDE -YOU WILL BE DOINGMORE THAN ONE ROLEand YOU MUST STATE

    CLEARLY WHAT YOU DID.
