point of view

In a world distracted by technology, creativity has been a hot topic on how we can move forward as a generation. Some great coverage of why creativity matters includes the Kelley brothers’ book Creative Confidence, Sir Ken Robinson’s TED Talk on how schools kill creativity, and Austin Kleon’s Steal like an Artist. Creativity helps us become better storytellers and helps us empathize with others through sharing these stories. Through integrating daily creative exercises in users’ lives, we hope to improve people’s storytelling abilities and transcend the idea that we are too distracted by technology to be creative.

We created this point of view in modification of team member Katie’s analysis on writing personal statements. Through her observations, she found how difficult it was for many students to storytell, possibly through the lack of emphasis on creativity in the classroom. As a team, we wanted to broaden this idea of making people better storytellers, with an emphasis on how creativity is such an important factor of great storytelling.

How to Be an Explorer of the World by Keri Smith

Keri Smith’s book emphasizes her readers to be cre-ative simply by thinking creatively about their sur-roundings. We want to integrate this idea into our app, allowing them to be creative based on their sur-roundings, like having prompts based on the users’ location.

lumosity

We want to make our app similar to Lumosity’s brain training games. We like how users can see their progress, and that they have a range of simple and fun games. Lumosity emphasizes daily use for users to make progress, which we modeled our point of view after.

CREATIVEGAMES.NET

We really liked these short exercises provided by creativegames.net that focus on easy, stress-free prompts to promote creativity. This is an inspiration for some of the prompts we are hoping to implement in our application.

WRITEONELEAF.TUMBLR.COM

Write One Leaf focuses on daily writing prompts, which is something we want to emulate in our application.

“something small everyday”-austin kleon

Popular writer on creativity, Austin Kleon, writes about making something everyday in his blog post. This really solidified our idea for daily creative exercises.
