Unit 7: Introducing Music sequencing
Learning aims
covered
Learning aim A: explore music sequencing techniques
Learning aim B: use music sequencing software to
create music
Duration (approx)
Learning aim a = 10 hours
Learning aim b = 20 hours
Scenario
learning aim A
You have been asked to demonstrate your understanding of music sequencing techniques by developing a training resource for others to use that outlines note input, note editing and effects. This training resource can be in the format of a presentation (powerpoint or otherwise) a training video or a work log outlining the features of Cubase.
Scenario
learning aim b
You have been asked to create a sequenced piece of music for one of the following
a) A well known pop/dance/rock track lasting 2-3 minutes b) A piece of film music c) A dance track that could be used for a late night dance radio
show
Learning Aim A
Explore music sequencing techniques
Task 1
You need to create a training product that can be used by future year 9 students showing how to use the sequencing functions of Cubase. You can base this on your own sequencing work and can describe how you have used note input and editing features, and how you have selected instruments, sounds and effects when creating sequenced pieces. You may also like to discuss effects which you haven’t used yet, giving examples of when they might be used, and any advantages and limitations of the software you have used to create your pieces. The product can be in the form of ONE or more of the following
1. a presentation 2. training video 3. work log
Your presentation will use audio examples of your sequenced work and is likely to include screenshots showing techniques used.
Evidence you must
produce for this
task
The actual training product – presentation/video tutorial/log
Diary record of your work each lesson as you make progress
Screenshots of techniques used
Example recordings of short sequenced pieces.
Problems that you faced and how you solved them You may also submit any other form of evidence such as the midi booklet
Criteria covered by this task: explore music sequencing techniques
To achieve the level 2 criteria you must show that you
are able to:

Evidence
you must
produce for
this task
Your final stereo mix A regular log/blog on what you have achieved each lesson and where you have found problems and successes with the work
Learning Aim B
use music sequencing software to
create music
You have been asked to create a sequenced piece of music for one of the following
a) A well known pop/dance/rock track lasting 2-3 minutes b) A piece of film music (any genre) c) A dance track that could be used for a late night dance radio
show You should submit your final piece as a stereo audio file. You will need to
select suitable sounds to fit the brief – software instruments (halion one/VST instruments etc)
select suitable project settings such as tempo
record MIDI – real time capture, step recording, clicking in
region editing – looping, copy and paste, resizing and trimming, time-stretching
quantise suitably
ensure that note position, note length, note pitch and note velocities are all suitable
You will also need to mix the final track The tracks should be mixed together to create a finished product. Attention should be given to:
volume balance
stereo field – appropriate panning of instruments
effects – using insert effects, e.g. reverb, delay, chorus, distortion
the end product – bouncing down to stereo
Criteria covered by this task:
use music sequencing software to create music
To achieve the level 2 criteria you must show
that you are able to:
Unit Criterion reference
Apply sequencing techniques in the production of a piece
of music.
7 2B.P2 P
Select and apply sequencing techniques in the production
of a piece of music, with attention to detail.
7 2B.M2 M
Select and apply sequencing techniques in the production
of a piece of music, with attention to detail and musicality
7 2B.D2 D
Apply mixing techniques, competently.
7 2B.P3 P
Select and apply mixing techniques competently and
effectively.
7 2B.M3 M
Select and apply mixing techniques that enhance
the final mix
7 2B.D3 D
If you have not achieved the level 2 criteria, your work will be
assessed to determine if the following level 1 criteria has been met
Apply limited sequencing techniques in the production of a
piece of music.
7 1B.2
Use a limited range of mixing techniques.
