IN LOVE AND REMEMBRANCE TO

Dean Francia on the death of his mother who died October 20, 2018.

Deborah Cathey and family on the death of Tom Cathey. Tom died October 24, 2018.

Kelsey and Patrick Seager and Becky and Scott Snyder on the death of Jeffrey Shane Hinote, Kelsey’s uncle and Becky’s brother, respectively. Jeff passed away October 25, 2018 at the age of 59.

CONGRATULATIONS

Pam and Garrett Henderson on the birth of their son, Davies Evan Henderson, born October 22, 2018. Proud grandparents are Susan and Tommy Davies.

Dr. Janet Pilcher on receiving the Florida State University Distinguished Alumni Award for 2018.

In his sermon, “On Money,” John Wesley outlined rules for ethical and theological use of money. Wesley put it this way, “If those who ‘gain all they can,' and ‘save all they can,' will likewise ‘give all they can;’ then, the more they gain, the more they will grow in grace, and the more treasure they will lay up in heaven.” Many of you have probably heard of John Wesley’s threefold method on money; “earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can.”

“Earn all you can.” The first point in Mr. Wesley’s sermon is not for someone to gain money unethically. The idea behind this point is for you to understand how you obtained your money. As Bishop Kenneth Carder wrote,“Giving in the Wesleyan tradition considers how we earn the wealth, not just how we use the wealth earned.”

“Save all you can.” The second principal of the Wesleyan understanding of money was not to endorse hoarding or accumulating wealth. As Methodists, we are called to live a simple lifestyle and saving money so we can give it away.

“Give all you can.” The final rule on money from Mr. Wesley’s sermon brings full circle the meaning of stewardship. As John Wesley wrote, “Waste nothing ... on sin or folly, whether for yourself or your children. And then, give all you can, or in other words give all you have to God.” You cannot love God and not give everything to God.

As we approach the end of year, remember the church in yourgiving. Remember to invite someone to church this Holiday Season. People are hurting and need to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Also pray about your pledge for next year and turn in your pledge card. You can see on page 4 the number of pledges received and the total amount pledged to date. Since this past Sunday, we had 17 pledged for $57,700. I am grateful for the people at First Church. You have done so much this year for the kingdom of God. By your giving, we have reached people for Christ all over Pensacola, Florida, the United States and the world. God has much more in store for First Church in 2019. I hope to see you at church this Sunday.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS - FALL BACK

First United Methodist Church of Pensacola, quickly approaching its 200th anniversary, is no stranger to growth and change. While we pride ourselves on our rich history and traditions, adaptation is also essential to the life of an historical church. More than 3,200 professing members call First Church their home. We are blessed with a generationally diverse congregation that ranges from the young families each year that welcome newborn babies to the hundreds of members over the age of 75, many of which have called First Church home for generations.

The Pastoral Care Team is a ministry of clergy and laity who have joined together to provide care for our members young and old. The team is trained to provide visits for members who are in crisis, need prayer, are experiencing grief, are homebound or desire to receive communion. In addition, the Pastoral Care Team has spearheaded the many parking initiatives, including the Visitor Parking and Gracious Spaces (Parking reserved for the mobility challenged). Recently the team has started to see a greater need for parking that is not only reserved for the mobility challenged, but designed to assist those in need through any life circumstance. John Griffin, Pastoral Care Team member stated, “We had congregants that were not coming to church because of disabilities and needing help getting in to church, so we wanted to provide the assistance so that they could attend." With a few orange traffic cones and dedicated volunteers, the Assisted Parking Program made its debut a few weeks ago. Each Sunday morning since, during all service times and Sunday School, there have been multiple spaces in front of The Wright Place blocked off with signs reading “Assisted Parking”. We invite those using wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters; expectant mothers; and anyone who finds them self needing a little extra help on Sundays to utilize these spaces. Tom and Margaret Helms, members of 41 years, have been utilizing the new service. Tom stated, “My wife is currently wheelchair bound and it has been difficult trying to find a space to park.” He described the help that they received through this program as, “overwhelming, heartwarming, and another sign of the wonderful love of this church”.

John Griffin explained that this program can only be a success with volunteers. They are in need of at least 5 volunteers who are willing to serve weekly, biweekly, or monthly on Sunday mornings. Volunteers can be male or female and 16 years of age and older (with a license). Those serving will have the option to assist from 7:30 - 9:30am, 9:30am - 12:30pm, or both. No previous training is required. Any necessary education on how to load and unload from vehicles and how to transfer persons to wheelchairs will be provided by the Pastoral Care Team. Anyone interested in serving is asked to contact Jennifer Piver ([email protected]) for more information.
