What is Assistive

Technology?

Assistive technology is any kind of equipment or technology that will

enhance independent function in the classroom for a student with disabilities.

This helps students with disabilities learn on the same level as their peers.

The equipment could be as simple as a pencil grip or as complex as a motorized

wheelchair.

IDEA 2004 and

Assistive Technology

Steps for Assistive Technology

• Evaluate the need of the child in his or her environment

• IEP team will evaluate to determine if assisted technology is needed

• Purchase or lease equipment needed• Customize, fit, repair, or design the

equipment • Training for the child• Training for parents, teachers, and

other professionals involved

Steps for Assistive Technology

Examples of

Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology for Hearing Impaired

Assistive Technology for Hearing Impaired

FM Systems

Assistive Technology for Hearing Impaired

FM Systems• Assisted listening device that uses

radio broadcast technology• Amplifies specific sounds for a person

with hearing disabilities• Can be used with hearing aids or

cochlear implants • Allows the student to hear teacher

instruction

Assistive Technology for Seeing Impaired

Assistive Technology for Seeing Impaired

Video Magnifiers With Text-To-Speech• Three in one camera that interacts with the

computer or ipad to enlarge print or read text• This device will enable the student to see and

hear written text• Can view thing close or at a distance• Allows an assignment to be read independently

Assistive Technology for Learning Disabled

Assistive Technology for Learning Disabled

Talking Spell Checker/Electronic Dictionary• This device identifies and corrects spelling errors during

the writing process• Talking devices will read aloud the word so the reader

can see and hear the word• Will help correct misspelled words during writing and

looks up words they do not know

Assistive Technology for Physically Disabled

Assistive Technology for Physically Disabled

Oversized Track Ball Mouse• Is a large oversized sphere that is on the

top of a mouse instead of the bottom• A colorful track mouse appeals to younger

users and those with mental disabilities• If the user has more control of their lower

appendages, it is large enough to be controlled by their feet

• This will allow students with poor muscle control to be able to manipulate the cursor easier
